Styrene acrylic emulsions (SAEs) have emerged as a promising material for water-based coatings. However, they are still limited by their own defects in practical applications, poor weatherability, and degradation of performance at lower or higher temperatures. Here, we introduce a facile approach to producing fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from wood processing residues and fabricating fluorescent CQD/SAE coating films via emulsion-casting. The addition of the fluorescent CQDs enhanced the optical performance of the CQD/SAE coating films. The fluorescent CQDs were prepared via a hydrothermal approach and were obtained after heating at 180 °C for 6 h at a reaction concentration of 50 mg/mL. The synthesized CQDs resulted in a high fluorescence, and the CQDs had an average size of 1.63 nm. Various concentrations of the fluorescent CQDs were doped into the SAE coating film, which improved its optical properties. We also characterized and discussed the products and then explored their optical properties. This study presents the potential of fluorescent CQD/SAE coating films for applications in anti-counterfeiting coatings, fluorescent adhesives, and papermaking.

Abstract A facile two-step hydrothermal approach with post-sulfurization treatment was put forward to construct the mixed transition metal sulfide (NiCoZnS) with a high electrochemical performance. The different morphologies of NiCoZnS materials were successfully fabricated by adjusted the Ni/Co molar ratio of the NiCoZn(OH)F precursor. Moreover, the in-situ phase transformation from the NiCoZn(OH)F phase to Zn0.76Co0.24S and NiCo2S4 phases and lattice defects via the S2− ion-exchange were determined by XRD, TEM and XPS techniques, which improved electric conductivity and interfacial active sites of the NiCoZnS, and so promoted the reaction kinetics. Significantly, the urchin-like NiCoZnS1/1 prepared at the Ni/Co molar ratio of 1.0 exhibited promising electrochemical performances with high capacitance and excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the asymmetric device (NiCoZnS//AC) using NiCoZnS1/1 as the positive electrode had excellent supercapacitor performances with an energy density of 57.8 Wh·kg–1 at a power density of 750 W·kg–1 as well as a long cycle life (79.2% capacity retention after 10000 cycles), indicating the potential application in high-performance supercapacitors.

The Ni2P nanowires were simply synthesized via a rapid one-step hydrothermal approach, in which deionized water, red phosphorus, nickel acetate, and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide were used as the solvent, phosphor and nickel sources, and active agent, respectively. The as-synthesized Ni2P nanowire clusters were composed of uniform nanowires with length of about 10 μm and diameter of about 40 nm. The Ni2P nanowires exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction This work provides good guidance for the rational design of nickel phosphides with unique nanostructures for highly efficient overall water splitting.

Assembly of small building blocks such as atoms, molecules, nanoparticles, and microparticles into macroscopic structures has opened up new and exciting opportunities in the realm of nanotechnology and microtechnology. Here, we report a simple hydrothermal approach for assembling chromic hydroxide microscopic particles into three-dimensional chromic hydroxide with cylindrical morphology. The morphology and size as prepared samples are controlled by the concentration of Cr(NO3)3. Our approach provides a reliable way to successfully assemble various other types of particles into cylindrical macrostructures, realizing the shape engineering of nanoscale and microscale structures to macroscopic well-defined architectures for further applications.

The current study offers an efficient design of novel nanoparticle microspheres (MCs) using a hydrothermal approach. The Co0.5Ni0.5GaxFe2-xO4 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) MCs were prepared by engineering the elements, such as cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), and gallium (Ga). There was a significant variation in MCs’ physical structure and surface morphology, which was evaluated using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The anti-proliferative activity of MCs was examined by MTT assay and DAPI staining using human colorectal carcinoma cells (HCT-116), human cervical cancer cells (HeLa), and a non-cancerous cell line—human embryonic kidney cells (HEK-293). Post 72 h treatment, MCs caused a dose dependent inhibition of growth and proliferation of HCT-116 and HeLa cells. Conversely, no cytotoxic effect was observed on HEK-293 cells. The anti-fungal action was assessed by the colony forming units (CFU) technique and SEM, resulting in the survival rate of Candida albicans as 20%, with severe morphogenesis, on treatment with MCs x = 1.0. These findings suggest that newly engineered microspheres have the potential for pharmaceutical importance, in terms of infectious diseases and anti-cancer therapy.

The electrochemical performance of the material depends heavily on the morphologies and structural characteristics of the material. Co3O4 samples show the remarkable electrochemical performance owing to the high porosity, appropriate pore size distribution and novel architecture and the effect of NH4F for morphology. Co3O4 nanowires grown on Ni foam have been synthesized through a facile hydrothermal approach, revealing large capacitance of 2178.4 mF cm−2 at the current density of 2 mA cm−2 and superior cycling stability.
