Providing relevant pre-migration information for newcomers to Canada can have many potential benefits, however there is a gap in understanding the implications of pre-departure cultural orientations (P-DCO) on refugee settlement. This research focuses on the unique resettlement experiences of privately sponsored refugees entering Canada through the Student Refugee Program (SRP). The purpose of this research is to understand how P-DCO impacts the resettlement of SRP participants and identify the effectiveness of such programs. The study uses the theoretical lens of cultural and social capital to understand the role of P-DCO in the migration and resettlement of SRP participants. Individual interviews were conducted with 6 SRP participants, as well as a key informant interview with the SRP Senior Program Officer. This exploratory study contributes to an enhanced understanding of the effectiveness of P-DCO for refugees in their resettlement and advocates further research for other immigrant categories.

The past year has been one that I never could have predicted. As I entered what I thought was my final year as LRTS Editor, I was diagnosed with a debilitating neurological condition that required me to miss three months of work. I also missed the 2019 ALA Annual Conference in Washington, DC, since I was hospitalized during the week of the conference. I continued to edit papers and correspond with authors during that time. Fortunately, I had just one author withdraw a paper because I could not promise the turnaround time on her paper for which she had hoped. I am indebted to Brooke Morris-Chott, ALCTS’s communications program officer, and Tim Clifford, manager, ALA Productions Services, for their support during a challenging time.

I am honored to receive the 2019 ASCB Public Service Award. It has been a true privilege to work with the cell biology community; I thank them for their collegiality in their interactions with me over the years. In this essay I offer some perspectives on constructing goals and strategy for research grant and fellowship applications in basic cell biology. They are based on my observations as a program officer for grants and applications in cell biology in the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) from 1991 to 2019.
