Soap ope ras, better known as electronic cinema or teledrama, play a major role in society in understanding this real or real life and plugging in frames / images of thought in the future. In preparing for a global era and an increasingly advanced industrial society and intense competition in the global market, Indonesian soap operas must be able to play its role. Along with the increasing number of private TV sets, quantitatively Indonesian soap operas experienced a very proud development and also gave a variety of nuances, however the quality of Indonesian soap operas has only recently developed. Indonesian soap operas must consider the elements of education, entertainment, the real problems of society and the way they are done, such as the DKI reborn Warkop film which has a classic feel but is still interesting as a television broadcast that is comedy and educating. Actually, if we want to emulate a very educational cartoon film such as Upin and Ipin, Shiva even though the results of neighboring state products contain a message of education and a very high moral message, Indonesian children love cartoon films like this, besides being funny, educating , raising local culture, and introducing the name of a particular place. Indonesian television shows are still dominated by shows that are beyond human reach. How much television is still mystical like in the Antv program, almost every day cannot be separated from mystical shows (Eyes of the Dark, Penetrating the inner eye, GGS and others).

‘The happy consciousness’ explores how happiness precludes progress, and how this can be overcome. For Hegel and the Frankfurt School, conformism and loss of individuality mark the happy consciousness. Only true nonconformists, with an understanding of the constraints of freedom, and therefore an ‘unhappy consciousness’, can effect progress. The Frankfurt School’s members posed many criticisms of modern life and the culture industry. But the danger that advanced industrial society presents to the unhappy consciousness is perhaps the most telling. At stake is the substance of subjectivity and autonomy: the will and ability of the individual to resist external forces intent upon determining the meaning and experience of life.

Abstract: In this essay, we intend to re-visit the analysis that Pierre-Jean Labarrière did, in his Dimensions pour l’homme: essai sur l’expérience du sens (1975), of Herbert Marcuse’s One-dimensional Man: Studies in the ideology of advanced industrial society (1964). Through a critical dialogue with both authors, we suggest an alternative way of thinking the relationship between meaning and transcendence. The article is divided in four parts. To start with, we argue that the topic is as timely as our two interlocutors. Then, we expose Marcuse’s conception regarding our issue in such a way that the philosophical point Labarrière addresses in his comment becomes clear. Thirdly, we circumscribe the polemic within the French author’s coherent stand, at the same time as we demonstrate the existence of a similar background of metaphysical concerns, which are mostly a Hegelian legacy, that both philosophers share. Finally, we venture the idea that a version, more centered on the potentialities of a “modest rationality” and based on the constructive aspect of language, can give to the category of meaning the function of articulating more effectively mundanity, liberty and transcendence.

Abstract: The article intends to show the discussion on technology at the Institute of Social Research based on the thoughts of Horkheimer and Marcuse. Although both discuss the technology referenced socially, the conclusions they reached are not the same. The thought of the young Horkheimer evaluates technology as a productive force capable of liberating the human being. In the 1940s this position gradually gave way to a more skeptical one about the possibilities of technology. This is now seen as an instance of domination of nature and man. Instead, since his first writing, Marcuse evaluates technology from a dual perspective: it is domination and liberation. In the framework of his theory of society, technology is conceived as a force for liberation. In his analysis of advanced industrial society, technology is geared primarily for the domination and maintenance of the status quo. This dual perception makes Marcuse’s thought more dialectical and less pessimistic than those of Horkheimer. Keywords: Horkheimer, Marcuse, Technology, Progress, Social Theory
