This study is concerned with the analysis of Catford’s formal shifts use in speech act translation from English into Bahasa Indonesia in Kung Fu Panda movie. The analysis covers the use of level shift and category shift on achieving pragmatic equivalence and how the visual-verbal relation happened along with the pragmatic achievement process. This study took documentation and a questionnaire on collecting the data. In this study, a theory from Baker (1992) was applied to analyze pragmatic equivalence achievement. Moreover, the theory from Halliday (1994) in Martinec and Salway (2005) was used to identify visual-verbal relations. The results of the study depicted (1) the use of level shift and category shift were very needed which led to pragmatic equivalence achievement (95,3%). Based on the target readers and expert raters, (2) the visual-verbal relation helped the translator on target text arrangement by providing the context of which the speech act was being uttered. The visual-verbal relation identified in the Kung Fu Panda movie were exposition (12,7%), enhancement (9,3%), extension (5,3%) and locution relation (72,7%). (3) The translator tended to use category shift dominantly (66,67%) for recreating the most suitable target text that was similar to the source text’s pragmatic meaning.The large identification of visual-verbal relation locutionallowed target and expert readers to perceive the meaning lied in speech act only from the word given.

O mosteiro budista de Shaolin, fundado em 495 EC na província de Henan, é famoso como berço do budismo ch’an (zen) em terras sínicas. É célebre, também por seus monges guerreiros e suas relações com as modernas artes marciais – o “kung fu Shaolin”. As histórias reais e as lendas associadas ao poder marcial desses personagens, que povoam o imaginário sínico desde o século XVI, chegaram ao público ocidental há pouco mais de cinquenta anos, quando teve início a “Onda Kung Fu”, movimento midiático que inspirou a prática da arte marcial chinesa em escala global. Neste artigo, examinamos as destruições que o mosteiro de Shaolin sofreu ao longo de mais de mil e quinhentos anos de história, mais exatamente nos períodos de passagem do período Sui-Tang, Yuan-Ming, Ming-Qing e na primeira república chinesa. Nosso foco, porém, reside na historicidade de uma narrativa presente na tradição do kung fu: a da “destruição de 1736” do mosteiro de Shaolin. Ao buscar suas raízes, observamos que elas parecem apontar tanto para um episódio histórico quanto para uma lenda importante no contexto anti-Qing do século XVIII.

The purpose of this study is to reveal how children interpret animated movies that include critical concepts. The study investigates the mechanism of 20 Iranian children's interpretation aged 9–12 of animations that contain critical concepts and challenging ideas. Participants were interviewed by an ethnographic approach immediately after watching three animated movies, Zootopia, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Inside Out. The collected data were interpreted based on reception theory, sociocultural theory, and frame theory. Three categorizations emerged from the data collected from interviews with children: framegroup, different framegroup, and incomplete framegroup. The variables most influencing children's interpretation of animations were their schemas or frames and the conceptual tools to interpret the animated movies. Some of the results show that the selected animations were not influential enough to change children's schemas and improve their critical thinking. However, if they were equipped with critical conceptual tools, they would grasp and interpret critical concepts featured in the animations.

<div>This research project is an autoethnography about my journey in becoming a holistic social worker. The theoretical framework includes critical race feminism, Asian feminism, and yin yang theory. The literature review finds social workers are integrating alternative healing practices in their professional work. The research methods are the process and product of writing the autoethnography. The research question is: what persons, situations, and experiences were influential in my becoming a holistic social worker? The findings indicate the influencing factors: family environment, learning kung fu and Chinese medicine, social justice activities at church, healing professionals, working in mental health field, training in counselling and mental health, and holistic social workers. The discussions indicate white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism, and cultural appropriation had negative impacts on my life and presented opportunities for resistance.</div>
