This thesis project discusses the British Press Agencies Collection ("BPAC") which was donated to the Art Gallery of Ontario ("AGO") in 2008 by the Archive of Modern Conflict in London, England. The BPAC, a collection of 1240 gelatin silver prints includes works from over 50 press agencies and 70 photographers. Completion of this thesis project involved researching the images in the BPAC, organizing and re-housing the collection and creating a finding aid. This thesis project has three parts: 1)an analytical paper, 2)the organization and re-housing of the collection, and 3)the creation of a finding aid. The analytical paper discusses the methodology of the research undertaken, the choices made in the organization and re-housing of the collection, and the issues surrounding large press collections in museums. The finding aid is intended to be a document available to researchers in the Marvin Gelber Prints and Drawing Study Centre at the AGO.

The role of ethnocultural factors in the development of medical tourism

The subject of this research is the eth0culture of medical tourism. On December 17, 2020, during a large press conference, the Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance for the development of domestic tourism. There is much concern about the citizens’ health, which raises the question on the promotion of domestic and inbound medical tourism, which is many ways lags behind the outbound medical tourism. Attraction of foreign citizens to the healthcare centers in Russia is one of the priority tasks of the National Project “Healthcare”. In this regard, there are new approaches that are not yet implemented. It implies that medicine is a part of culture, thus cannot but be unaffected by traditions and national mentality. To a great extent, the development of positive attitudes towards medical treatment in Russia depends on ethnocultural adaptation of medical tourists. Moreover, there is a consistent group of patients oriented towards the services of ethnomedicine. There are virtually no research dedicated to ethnomedicine within the framework of sociological interest in Russian literature, which actualizes the projection of approaches presented in the foreign sources onto polyethnic diversity of Russia. The aforementioned arguments stress the need for scientific examination of the possibility of using ethnocultural factors in promotion of medical and healthcare tourism. In the categorical field of medical sciences it cannot be implemented due to the absence of the corresponding problematic and terminological apparatus. However, the sociology of culture allows studying the problem from medical, culturological, and ethnological perspective, since it possess the methodology of scientific synthesis of all listed areas of knowledge. The research of ethnocultural factors of medical domestic and inbound tourism, which suggests not only a geographical change, but a change of ethnic environment as well, defines the novelty of this work and actualizes the conclusions on the proposed measures with regards to utilization of ethnocultural component in this sphere.

Public discourses on multilingualism in the UK: Triangulating a corpus study with a sociolinguistic attitude survey

This article investigates public discourses of multilingualism in Britain. In contrast to previous research focusing on specific languages or varieties of language, we examine multilingualism as a metalinguistic construct and are interested in what is frequently said about multilingualism, and how it is said. More specifically, we explore the extent to which media discourses are consonant or diverge from the attitudes of lay people. Media discourses are investigated using a corpus-assisted discourse-study approach to the analysis of large-press corpora. Results from the corpus study are then incorporated in an attitude survey distributed to 200 participants living in a large superdiverse town in Britain. Our study shows that while positive media discourses are mostly shared by the general public, some of the negative themes, especially those relating to immigration, are either reinforced or challenged. The article demonstrates the usefulness of triangulating corpus-linguistic methods with a survey to provide a more comprehensive understanding of public discourses about language matters, and offers some implications for promoting multilingualism in society. Investigation on the design of hydraulic high-speed punching press with a large press force and a long press stroke

High-speed punching presses are widely applied in modern manufacture industry, especially in occasions of automatic production with a large or a super large quality. To obtain a better production efficiency and a wilder application in industries, it is meaningful to develop the high-speed punching presses with a large press force and a long press stroke. Considering the limitations of mechanical and servo high-speed punching presses, hydraulic technology is the most possible way to develop the high-speed punching press with a large press force and a long press stroke so far. This article has proposed a hydraulic operating principle based on the hydraulic vibration technology for the development of the high-speed punching press with a press force of 1250 kN, a press stroke of 50 mm, and a press velocity of 1000 hpm. With a simulation model built under the AMESim environment, performances of the system are obtained and analyzed. Then, parameter optimization is also carried out and discussed. Finally, the operating principle and the parameters are refined. The obtained results have proved that the design meets the aimed performances of the high-speed punching press.

CARMO

CARMO is the prehardened version of CALMAX (see Alloy Digest TS-177, March 1966). I started out as a commercial artist and cartoonist. One day, 32 years ago, while working for a printing plant in the art department, I saw large press sheets for a fossil book (it was the second printing, with color plates, of Fenton and Fenton's Fossil Book). I asked one of the printers for copies of the sheets. I brought them back into the department where I worked, and while on my lunch hour, I cut them apart and sewed them together to form a book of sorts.
