Abstract Purpose To investigate the sensitivity of the color vision test by Arden in patients with dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) to improve diagnosis. Methods In this observational, retrospective study, we included the medical records of 92 eyes (48 patients) with diagnosis of DON between 2008 and 2019 in order to evaluate the full spectrum of findings from the color vision test by Arden, and to determine potential importance of this test. Thirty-five patients were female, and 13 patients were male. The mean age was 58.0 years (range: 34–79) at the time of the DON diagnosis. Results Forty-one eyes displayed relatively good BCVA with ≤ 0.2 LogMAR. We found a protan value exceeding the threshold of ≥ 8% in 57 eyes (30 patients) at the time of the diagnosis. The sensitivity of protan was 61.9% (95% CI 51.2–71.8%), while that of tritan was a striking 98.9% (95% CI 94.1–99.9%). We discovered one pathological sign, tritan deficiency (based on a threshold of ≥ 8%) consistently in all eyes but one at the time of the diagnosis, regardless of the visual field defects or any changes in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA). Conclusion We found blue-yellow (tritan) deficiency, to be a sensitive and reliable indicator of dysthyroid optic neuropathy. We conclude that, in cases with suspected DON, a color vision test that can detect tritan deficiency is an essential tool for the adequate assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of DON.

This paper analyzes the patterns of weakening of soft-wooded broadleaved species, provides the frequency of occurrence of the most common external signs of pathologies and their relationship with the general condition of trees. It was found that the most common pathological sign in soft-wooded broadleaved species is drying out of branches (58.2% of the surveyed trees), followed by breakage of skeletal branches (14.9%) and the presence of thick skeletal branches in the crown (14.4% ). Further, as the occurrence of signs decreases, we see trunk inclination of varying degrees (13.9%), where inclination of up to 30° prevails, various pathologies of the trunk shape (12.9%), the most frequent among which was the bifurcation of the trunk, bending of the trunk relative to the normal axis of the tree (7%) and fruiting bodies of wood-destroying fungi (4.1%). Small-leaved linden (Tilia cordata Mill.) was the most stable species in the surveyed plantation, on which the least number of pathological signs was recorded. The revealed features of the external manifestation of pathologies will make it possible to determine the category of the tree state more accurately and increase objectivity and reliability of forest pathological examinations

Myelin disruption is a feature of natural aging and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the CNS, myelin is produced by oligodendrocytes, which are generated throughout life by oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs). Here, we examined age-related changes in OPCs in APP/PS1 mice, a model for AD-like pathology, compared with non-transgenic (Tg) age-matched controls. The analysis was performed in the CA1 area of the hippocampus following immunolabeling for NG2 with the nuclear dye Hoescht, to identify OPC and OPC sister cells, a measure of OPC replication. The results indicate a significant decrease in the number of OPCs at 9 months in APP/PS1 mice, compared to age-matched controls, without further decline at 14 months. Also, the number of OPC sister cells declined significantly at 14 months in APP/PS1 mice, which was not observed in age-matched controls. Notably, OPCs also displayed marked morphological changes at 14 months in APP/PS1 mice, characterized by an overall shrinkage of OPC process domains and increased process branching. The results indicate that OPC disruption is a pathological sign in the APP/PS1 mouse model of AD.

PurposeThe aim of this research was to investigate the subclinical findings of dysthyroid optic neuropathy (DON) and to look for early indicators for optic nerve compression in patients with Graves’ orbitopathy.Patients and MethodsIn this observational, retrospective study, the medical charts of 24 patients (32 eyes) with a diagnosis of DON between 2008 and 2019 were included. Our goal was to identify potential pathological signs in patients with DON prior to the definitive diagnosis of DON.ResultsWe discovered that the earliest pathological sign in the subclinical cases was tritan deficiency obtained with a standardised colour vision test by Arden. In all cases but one, regardless of the visual field (VF) defects, the tritan values were pathological (based on a threshold of ≥8%) in the subclinical phase. The mean tritan value was 19.12% (range 6.9–80.8%) at the time of the subclinical phase and 32.16% (range 6.3–100.0%) at the time of the diagnosis of DON. The sensitivity of the colour vision test was 20% for protan and 96.67% for tritan in the subclinical phase. At the time of the definitive diagnosis of DON, the sensitivity of protan was 48.15% compared to 96.30% for tritan.ConclusionWe found that changes in vision affecting the blue-yellow (tritan) colours resulting from the compression of optic nerve, even in affected patients with normal VF tests, are a reliable early sign of DON.

Acute leukemias are the most common childhood cancer in all age groups. Acute myeloid leukemias (AML) constitute about 15–20% of acute leukemias. Fatigability, pallor, fever, and bleeding are the most common presenting symptoms of AML. Hepatosplenomegaly and lymphadenopathy are commonly encountered during physical examination. In rare instances eruptions due to skin involvement and localized tumor masses (myeloid sarcoma) may be found. Myeloid sarcoma is especially seen in AML-M2 subtype. By cytogenetic analysis, in AML-M2 subtype t(8;21) is often seen and it is more probable to find inversion 16 in AML-M4Eos subtype. Herein, we present a 15-year-old girl whose initial symptom was abdominal pain for three days and her pathological sign was a large abdominal mass which was verified by imaging studies and diagnosed as myeloid sarcoma by biopsy. On bone marrow examination, she had diagnosis of AML-M2 and by cytogenetic analysis inversion 16 was positive. She was treated with AML-BFM 2004 protocol and she is being followed up in remission on her ninth month of the maintenance therapy.

Cardiac surgery is commonly associated with brain ischemia. Few studies addressed brain electric activity changes after on-pump operations. Eyes closed EEG was performed in 22 patients (mean age: ) before and two weeks after valve replacement. Spouses of patients were invited to participate as controls. Generalized increase of beta power most prominent in beta-1 band was an unambiguous pathological sign of postoperative cortex dysfunction, probably, manifesting due to gamma-activity slowing (“beta buzz” symptom). Generalized postoperative increase of delta-1 mean frequency along with increase of slow-wave activity in right posterior region may be hypothesized to be a consequence of intraoperative ischemia as well. At the same time, significant changes of alpha activity were observed in both patient and control groups, and, therefore, may be considered as physiological. Unexpectedly, controls showed prominent increase of electric activity in left temporal region whereas patients were deficient in left hemisphere activity in comparison with controls at postoperative followup. Further research is needed in order to determine the true neurological meaning of the EEG findings after on-pump operations.
