Abstract Ixodid ticks vector pathogens of humans, livestock, and wildlife, and occur in tropical and temperate regions worldwide. We used the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Ixodida: Ixodidae), as a model for other ixodid species, including the southern cattle fever tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini) (Ixodida: Ixodidae). We assessed the lethality of CimeXa, an inert silica-based desiccant dust, and Drione, a silica-based desiccant dust with pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO), against A. americanum larvae and nymphs on calves. CimeXa was highly lethal to larvae released onto shaved calf skin 72–96 h previously, and moderately toxic to nymphs. It did not affect immature life stages treated after they began feeding because desiccation was offset by ingestion of blood. Being inert, CimeXa can protect cattle from infestation before feeding occurs for a potentially indefinite period of time. Drione killed immatures within 24 h when released on treated skin and when applied to feeding ixodids because of the pyrethrin and PBO (PBO will also reduce resistance to pyrethrin if it develops). When CimeXa was applied to calves with the hair intact, ≈90% and ≈70% of A. americanum larvae and nymphs, respectively, were killed within 24 h and Drione killed 100% of each life stage. Drione also prevented and drastically reduced egg production and hatching. While CimeXa protects against infestation by immatures, Drione will also control ticks that are feeding. When pyrethrin and PBO in Drione eventually degrade, the silica aerogel carrier can continue to protect against infestation indefinitely.

Acid-soluble collagen and pepsin-soluble collagen were extracted from the skin of deer, Cervus korean TEMMINCK var. mantchuricus Swinhoe. The two types of collagen were then characterised using sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, amino acid composition analysis, peptide hydrolysis patterns, thermal denaturation temperature, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. The yield of pepsin-soluble collagen (9.62%) was greater than that of acid-soluble collagen (2.24%), but both types of collagen showed similar electrophoretic patterns with each other and with calf skin collagen. The peptide hydrolysis pattern results suggested that calf skin collagen and pepsin-soluble collagen from deer skin may be similar in terms of their primary structure. The thermal denaturation temperature of acid-soluble collagen and pepsin-soluble collagen were 36.67°C and 36.44°C, respectively, and their melting temperatures were 110°C and 120°C, respectively, which suggest high thermal stability. Fourier transform infrared showed a triple helical structure and nuclear magnetic resonance confirmed the presence of ‘hydration’ water. These results provide a basis for large-scale production and further application as alternatives to other mammalian collagens.

Recent reports demonstrate the need to improve methods for identifying obesity among adolescent minority populations, especially among Native American adolescents. Our study examined several anthropometric measures to see which one was the best indicator of obesity for Native American adolescents. We compared our data with that provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the national Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANESIII). We examined which measures differed significantly from the NHANESIII, and which were most effective for measuring obesity in Native American adolescents. Our study population represented a cross-sectional, epidemiological population (n=183) of Native American students (ages 14-18) from diverse tribal backgrounds at an urban residential high school. We obtained baseline anthropometric measurements of height, weight, waist, triceps skin-fold, and calf skin-fold measures from the Native American students and compared this information with reference data to assess weight classification by body mass indices (BMI) for our population. Under the conditions of our study, we found the calf skin-fold measure to be the best indicator of normal weight in male Native American adolescents, and the triceps skin-fold measure to be the best indicator of obesity in male Native American adolescents. The assessment of health risk by anthropometric measures we obtained appears appropriate for predicting obesity and developing effective interventions for Native American adolescents in general. Correlations between anthropometric measures and obesity in our study population may prove of significant interest for monitoring obesity prevention initiatives for Native American adolescents.
