Teak (Tectona grandis Linn. f) is a globally valuable hardwood tree species whose growth performance and tree quality characteristics are controlled by various factors. Teak tree quality characteristics such as stem straightness, buttressing, and protuberant buds/knots are important in the sawing process, and directly affect timber yield, timber grade, recovery, and cost. In this study, we assessed the relationships among tree quality characteristics, stand characteristics, and site characteristics in plantation teak in the Luang Prabang province of the Lao PDR. We established 53 sample plots (20 × 20 m) and measured a total of 2149 sample trees. The stand-level tree age ranged from 10 to 31 years, and the trees were distributed in various modes of topography. The altitude ranged from 287 to 867 masl. The results of Spearman’s partial rank correlation analysis among the parameters revealed the present condition of the teak plantation forest in the region. The altitude was related to stand age and was correlated with tree quality characteristics such as epicormic shoots, mode of branching, and branch size. The correlation results suggest that higher-density plantation at the higher altitude sites might be suitable for teak plantations in this area. In addition, we found that a longer rotation in forest management might degrade tree quality.

Jati Unggul Nusantara (JUN) is one of fast growing plantation teak that has been widely cultivated in Indonesia. This teak has been developed to be harvested after 5 years when its diameter reaches 25-32 cm (diameter at breast high). The diameter of JUN is usually three times larger than the conventional plantation teak (teak cultivated from seed) at the same age, and the same as 30-40 year-old mature teak. Preliminary research was conducted to determine anatomical and selected physical properties of 5-year-old JUN teak, as well as its suitability for furniture production. The results revealed that wood color, texture, and grain pattern of JUN were slightly different from the mature conventional teak. The length of fiber cells was similar as in the mature teak. There were differences in ultramicroscopic structure of JUN: the mean micro fibril angle was narrower, and the crystallites degree was larger. Shrinkage values from green to 12% moisture content were:  0.70 (radial-R) and 1.62 (tangential-T), and from green to oven dry were 1.59 (R) and 3.29 (T). T/R ratio was 2.34. Specific gravity in air dry condition was 0.52. Based on the research results it appears that 5-year-old JUN may be suitable for the production of medium quality furniture products. More research is required to investigate and enhance the properties of JUN for high quality products.

<p><em>Study dendrochronology or tree-ring dating is defined as the study of chronological sequence of annual growth rings in trees. Teak (Tectona grandis) is one of various tree species that has been identified for the use of tree-ring studies in tropical regions. Teak is found to be suitable for dendrochronology as it is long-lived and develops defined annual growth rings. In Java, teak cans growth naturally or intensively in plantation. The two silviculture conditions will give different sensitivity on climate effect. Therefore, the effect of silviculturer will on natural teak and plantation teak in Saradan, Madiun, and East Java. As a part of the study, ten core samples from natural- growth teak were measured. The samples of growth rings is spanned from 1832 – 2004. Using the COFECHA program, the correlation of the samples (r) was found to be 0.44 point, which is satisfactory to the standard used in dendrochronology. Thus, from this study it can be concluded that natural teak could still be used in dendrochronology, although the sensitivity are not as high as plantation teak. </em></p>
