ABSTRACT: Lymphoma is a neoplasm that originates from solid hematopoietic tissues and is one of the most common tumors in dogs. The goal of the present study was to perform a retrospective study of canine lymphomas diagnosed at the “Laboratório Regional de Diagnóstico”, at the “Faculdade de Veterinária” of the “Universidade Federal de Pelotas” (LRD-UFPel) from 2000 to 2017, to determine the epidemiology and anatomical distribution, and to evaluate the histopathological and immunohistochemical aspects of each case according to the adapted Kiel classification. The protocols for necropsies and biopsies in the laboratory were reviewed. Lymphoma was diagnosed in 77 dogs. Approximately 37.7% (29/77) of affected dogs had no defined breed, while dogs with defined breeds accounted for 58.4% (45/77) of the diagnoses. The occurrence in males (40/77) was slightly higher than that in females (36/77), and the mean age was 8.1 years (1.4-17 years). The most affected age group was between six and 10 years of age with 31 cases (40.2%). Regarding the anatomical classification, the multicentric form was the most prevalent, accounting for 71.4% (55/77) of the diagnoses. In 40 cases that immunophenotyping was performed, B-cell lymphomas represented 62.5% of the diagnoses (25/40), while T-cell lymphomas corresponded to 37.5% of the diagnoses (15/40). The degree of malignancy according to the modified Kiel classification was low in 35% of lymphomas (14/40) and high in 65% of cases (26/40). The multicentric form was more frequent in the region of influence of the LRD-UFPel. Identification of the immunophenotype can improve the quality of life and survival in affected dogs since it allows the most appropriate treatment for each patient.

Castlemans disease is characterized by benign angiolymphoid hyperplasia. There are two clinical forms: the localized form in which one lymph node is affected, often paucisimptomatic, treated by radical surgical excision, without recurrence in most cases, and the multicentric form, characterized by systemic manifestations, polyadenopathy (mediastin, cervical region, abdomen, etc.) , organomegaly (e.g. spleen, liver), with a less favorable prognosis than the localized form. The etiology of the disease remains unknown; recent studies suggest the implication of human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8), especially in multicenter forms. We shall present the case of women, aged 23, with Castlemans disease with retroperitoneal localization, who was admitted to the surgery clinic due to abdominal pains. The initial abdominal CT raised the suspicion of a hepatic lobus caudatus tumor, but the anatomical-pathological result confirmed the diagnosis of angiofolicular hyperplasia of the lymph nodes. Diagnostic methods, histological forms, treatment and prognosis aspects of Castlemans disease are described below.

This paper describes the epidemiological, clinical and immunohistochemical characteristics of canine lymphomas diagnosed in the region of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Thirty dogs were enrolled in the study; most of them were male (60%), mixed-breed (23%) and middle-aged or older. The majority (87%) of affected dogs showed the multicentric form. The B-cell phenotype was most frequently detected (62%); 37% of the animals were in clinical stage IV, and 83% were classified as sub-stage "b". Lymphadenopathy was observed in 67% of the cases, and dyspnea, prostration, decreased appetite and vomiting were the most common clinical signs encountered. Anemia was a frequently encountered laboratory alteration (57%), as were leukocytosis (40%), thrombocytopenia (33%), lymphopenia (30%), hyperglobulinemia (20%) and hypercalcemia (13%). The results of this study indicate that the clinical features of dogs with lymphoma in the region of Porto Alegre are similar to those observed worldwide.

AbstractGiant lymph node hyperplasia (Castleman's disease) is usually reported as a solitary mediastinal tumour, although involvement of other anatomical sites and a multicentric form have been reported. We describe a rare case of Castleman's disease due to its localisation (the left infratemporal fossa) and histology (plasma-cell variant). A brief review of the main clinico-histological characteristics of Castleman's disease is also presented.
