Stemming from conflicts over the authority of professional archives to arrange and steward community knowledge, this article outlines the limitations of the archival apparatus to produce the conditions for social liberation through acquisition and offers suggestions for how to operate otherwise, as a collaborator in forgetting. It discusses the origins and revised mission of the Pittsburgh Queer History Project (PQHP) as a reflection of the precarious definition of community archives within the discipline and field of archival science. By retracing the steps in the PQHP’s mission, as it moved from being a custodial and exhibit-focused collecting project to acting as a decentralized mobile preservation service, I argue that community archival practice is an important standpoint from which to critically reassess the capacity of institutional archives to create a more conscious and complete history through broader collecting. Specifically, I demonstrate how contemporary attention to the value of community records and community archives is frequently accompanied by a demand for such archives, records, and communities to confess precarity and submit to institutional recordkeeping practices.

This chapter uncovers the history of the Gesamtarchiv der deutschen Juden, the central archive of the German Jews, which operated from 1903 until it was confiscated by the Nazis in 1943. It details the Gesamtarchiv’s attempt to create a singular archive of German Jewish history in Berlin, and also opposition to the project of centralization, and it situates the archive within the wider trends of archival science. It thereby explicates the Gesamtarchiv’s vision of total archives and traces its legacy across the arc of the twentieth century. This archive was intended to help produce the history of Germany’s Jews and also to help manage its communities, but it was ultimately turned into an instrument for the domination of Jewish life by the Nazi regime. Altogether, this chapter offers the Gesamtarchiv as a starting point for a global network of Jewish archives that followed the Gesamtarchiv’s vision of archival totality.

Since the end of XIX century when for the very first time the archival principles of arrangement and description were outlined until ICA have published their first international standard commonly known as ISAD-G which defines its 26 elements of archival description and followed afterwards by series of archival standards (ISAAR- CPF, ISDIAH, and ISDF) in 1990’s and 2000’s. These elements of description are similar to metadata elements. As the metadata elements of Dublin Core, for example, that have been released in the mid of 1990’s and then later on was adopted by ISO 15836-1:2017 and ISO 15836-2:2019. This article describes the similarities among both elements, the elements of description and the elements of metadata, including the ICA’s latest archival standard (RiC) and by using paradigm of integration-interconnection and three model of discplinary cooperation (multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary) according to Amin Abdullah. Besides reading closely towards the literary sources including the published standards released by ICA and ISO, the writer also does the same things towards various archival standards published by several national archives. These are some of the contribution of archival science and archival standards in order to open the chance of having equal cooperation and seeing the possibilities of having cooperation among its three stages.

The chosen topic is determined by an urgent necessity to look into Panteleimon Kulish’s achievements as a piece of the Ukrainian society’s history, especially in the field of humanities, with the archival science occupying an important place within. It is an important factor combining past, present and future through epistolary work. National revival in Ukrainian society is impossible without an objective reception of P. Kulish’s creative heritage. At present, the letters of famous people are put at the level with other archival documents: protocols, notes, petitions, orders, diaries, and memoirs, notes of party and state bodies. Nowadays, in general use and open access there are huge archival collections, among which one can find many unprintable handwritten materials. Therefore, through a systemic and scrupulous scientific research, we are to find out the mysterious figure of P. Kulish, full of contradictions and contrasts, as state the scientists who have been studying his activities and work for more than a hundred years. However, the present stage of studying P. Kulish’s activities raises a necessity of carrying out a more complete, deeper and more thorough development of documentary sources, including correspondence. The Kulish letters provide his researchers with reliable facts about the artist's biography and work, and allow them to study and analyze in detail the cultural space of that time, that is, one way or another, represented in today's reality, as history repeats itself. The modern researcher is attracted to P. Kulish’s personality by the infinity of handwritten material, now awaiting its publication. With the involvement of archival material, the proposed publication considers various aspects of P. Kulish's relationship with his surroundings, analyzes his epistolary heritage as Kulish's correspondence is of a literary-scientific and cultural-social nature. Covering the views and ideas of P. Kulish, based on historical archival sources, the research addresses to documentary materials while working with epistolary sources, as well as introduces the writer's correspondence into scientific circulation.

As part of a doctoral research, eighty-eight local truth commissions created in Brazil between 2012 and 2018 were identified. Among them, it was selected the eleven final reports that described partnerships between truth commissions and universities. The paper analyzes the phenomenon of creation of local truth commissions in Brazil and the partnerships established between them and universities, especially, with Archival Science and History programs. It was found that the partnerships were established to make the work of truth commissions feasible and consisted of archival activities such as preservation, description, and scanning as well as research. It concludes that, although the educational engagement of Brazilian truth commissions has been limited, partnerships with universities have provided students the contact with the theme of human rights, in line with the callings for the profession to address activism and human rights within the context of archival education. Finally, the paper suggests that experiences developed by these partnerships could be incorporated into Archival Science programs in Brazil.
