Abstract Bangladesh is very much successful in coastal afforestation programmes, which protects from frequent cyclones. Casuarina equisetifolia has showed a climate resilient and promising species. No study has been done on industrial application of C. equisetifolia in Bangladesh. In this study, C. equisetifolia was characterized in terms of chemical, morphological and anatomical properties. It is characterized with higher α-cellulose, similar hemicelluloses and lignin as compared to other hardwood species grown in Bangladesh. The C. equisetifolia lignin contained mainly of syringyl unit followed by guaiacyl unit. The fiber of C. equisetifolia was shorter in length with very thick cell wall and narrow lumen, consequently the wood density and runkel ratio were very high (2.89). The C. equisetifolia was also fractionated by formic acid (FA) at atmospheric pressure to pulp, dissolved lignin and hemicelluloses. Pulp yield was 50 % with kappa number of 40 at the conditions of 3 h treatment with 90 % FA followed by 2 h peroxyformic acid treatment. But in the kraft process, C. equisetifolia produced pulp yield of 44 % with kappa number 17. Both pulps showed good bleachability. The papermaking properties were in acceptable range. Finally, it can be said that C. equisetifolia is promising species for pulping.

Enzymatic/mild acidolysis lignin was extracted from both unbleached and bleached eucalyptus pulp, and the difference in lignin structures was analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The unbleached pulp lignin was chlorinated with chlorine dioxide, and the mechanism of adsorbable organic halide (AOX) formation was investigated. Chlorinated reaction products were detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. There is a possibility of producing three different chlorobenzene or chlorophenol products from S/S lignin dimers that are connected with β-O-4 bonds. Based on quantum chemistry theory, three reaction pathways were investigated using molecular simulation techniques. The results showed that pathway 1 possessed the lowest reaction activation energy, which made it the most favored thermodynamically. The β-O-4 bond of the lignin dimer was cleaved. Following that scission, 2-chloro-3,5-dimethoxy-methyl benzene was the most likely product to be generated from the chlorination reaction of the syringyl unit. These results provide theoretical guidance for further reduction of AOX in chlorine dioxide bleaching.

The okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) plant consists of bast fiber and core (stick). The bast fibre of okra plant was characterized with high ?-cellulose (56.7%) and low lignin (12.6%) and stick withlow ?-cellulose (34.3%) and high lignin (25.2%) content. Lignin was isolated from the fiber and stick by acidolytic dioxane method and characterized for elemental analysis, methoxyl analysis and FTIR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The C9 formulas for okra stick and fibre lignin were C9H9.61O4.63(OCH3)1.24 and C9H8.61O4.66(OCH3)1.49, respectively. Both of the lignins were of the guaiacyl-syringyl type. The bands of FT-IR spectrum at 1327 cm-1, 1122 cm-1 and 837 cm-1 associated with syringyl unit was higher in okra fibre lignin than in the okra stick lignin. The structural analysis revealed that the average numbers of proton of ?-O-4 (H? & H?) per C9 unit in okra stick and fibre lignin were 1.53 and 1.20, respectively. The ?-O-4 units in these lignins had predominately erythro stereochemistry type.Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. Res. 50(4), 257-262, 2015

The distribution of guaiacyl and syringyl lignins in the secondary xylem tissues of normal and compression wood of Buxus microphylla var. insularis Nakai was examined by visible light (VL) microspectrophotometry coupled with the Mäule and Wiesner colour reactions and by UV -microspectrophotometry, and compared with normal wood of Betula ermani Cham. Buxus formed compression wood on the lower side of the leaning sterns, and the secondary walls of the vessels and fibre-tracheids showed excessive lignification, resembling the S2 (L) layer of compression wood tracheids in gymnosperms. In normal wood of both species, the Mäule colour reaction indicated that in Betula the secondary walls of fibres contain larger amounts of syringyl units in the lignins than other tissues, and that in Buxus the secondary walls of fibre-tracheids contain both syringyl and guaiacyl units. The vessel walls of both speeies contained higher amounts of guaiacyl units. Heterogeneity of the syringyl-Jignin distribution was found in the secondary walls of Buxus fibre-tracheids.In compression wood of Buxus, on the other hand, the spectra of the secondary walls of the vessels and fibretracheids after the Mäule reaction showed low absorbances compared with the normal wood, whereas, after the Wiesner reaction, their secondary walls gave high absorbances. In addition, the UV -absorption maximum of the secondary fibre walls shifted from 274 nm to 279 nrn, and the UV -absorbances of the vessei and fibre-tracheid walls greatly increased in compression wood. The results obtained in the present study demonstrated that in normal Buxus wood the secondary walls of the vessels and fibre-tracheids contain both guaiacyl and syringyl units, though the syringyl unit is a rninor constituent in the vessel walls, and that both cell types increase their contents of guaiacyl units, especially in the outer parts of the secondary walls during their changes from normal wood to compression wood. The present study also suggested that the Wiesner reaction may be used for examining the content of lignin and the proportion of guaiacyl to syringyl units in lignins.
