Loss of classicality in the alternating spin-½/spin-1 chain, in the presence of next-neighbor couplings and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

We have considered and alternating spin-½/spin-1 chain with nearest-neighbor (J1), next-nearest neighbor (J2) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions along with z-component of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya(DM) (Dz) interaction. The Hamiltonian has been studied using (a) Linear Spin-Wave Theory(LSWT) and (b) Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). The system had been reported earlier as a classical ferrimagnet only when nearest neighbor exchange interactions are present. Both the antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor interactions and DM interactions introduce strong quantum fluctuations and due to which all the signatures of ferrimagnetism vanishes. We find that the nonzero J2 introduces strong quantum fluctuations in each of the spin sites due to which the z-components of both spin-1 and spin-1/2 sites average out to be zero. The ground state becomes a singlet. The presence of J1 along with Dzintroduces a short range order but develops long range order along the XY plane. J1 along with J2induces competing phases with structure factor showing sharp and wide peaks, at two different angles reflecting the spin spiral structure locally as well as in the underlying lattice. Interestingly, we find that the Dz term removes the local spin spiral structure in z-direction, while developing a spiral order in the XY plane.

Path Integral Estimates of the Quantum Fluctuations of the Relative Soliton-Soliton Velocity in a Gross-Pitaevskii Breather

In this paper, the quantum fluctuations of the relative velocity of constituent solitons in a Gross-Pitaevskii breather are studied. The breather is confined in a weak harmonic trap. These fluctuations are monitored, indirectly, using a two-body correlation function measured at a quarter of the harmonic period after the breather creation. The results of an ab initio quantum Monte Carlo calculation, based on the Feynman-Kac path integration method, are compared with the analytical predictions using the recently suggested approach within the Bogoliubov approximation, and a good agreement is obtained.

Zeptometer Metrology Using the Casimir Effect

In this paper, we discuss using the Casimir force in conjunction with a MEMS parametric amplifier to construct a quantum displacement amplifier. Such a mechanical amplifier converts DC displacements into much larger AC oscillations via the quantum gain of the system which, in some cases, can be a factor of a million or more. This would allow one to build chip scale metrology systems with zeptometer positional resolution. This approach leverages quantum fluctuations to build a device with a sensitivity that can’t be obtained with classical systems.

Spacetime Foam, Midisuperspace, and the Cosmological Constant

Perhaps the cosmological constant really is huge at the Planck scale, but is “hidden” by Planck scale quantum fluctuations of spacetime. I briefly review this proposal and provide some evidence, coming from a simplified midisuperspace model, that an appropriate “foamy” structure can do the job of hiding a large cosmological constant, and can persist under time evolution.

From primordial quantum black holes to Bohr’s atom

Recently great interest has been devoted toward a better understanding of a possible deep relation between large size structures we observe today in the universe and the quantum fluctuations at Planck time. Within such a context this paper provides us with a procedure for how to obtain a faithful description of the Bohr energy levels for hydrogen like atoms, starting from a generalization of a quantum relation for primordial black holes’ masses at Planck time. The key role of quantum mechanics in such a description is emphasized and the classical correspondence taking us from Newton’s law for interacting masses to Coulomb’s law for interacting charges evidenced.

Can quantum fluctuations differentiate between standard and unimodular gravity?

We formally prove the existence of a quantization procedure that makes the path integral of a general diffeomorphism-invariant theory of gravity, with fixed total spacetime volume, equivalent to that of its unimodular version. This is achieved by means of a partial gauge fixing of diffeomorphisms together with a careful definition of the unimodular measure. The statement holds also in the presence of matter. As an explicit example, we consider scalar-tensor theories and compute the corresponding logarithmic divergences in both settings. In spite of significant differences in the coupling of the scalar field to gravity, the results are equivalent for all couplings, including non-minimal ones.

Spin liquid and ferroelectricity close to a quantum critical point in PbCuTe2O6

Geometrical frustration among interacting spins combined with strong quantum fluctuations destabilize long-range magnetic order in favor of more exotic states such as spin liquids. By following this guiding principle, a number of spin liquid candidate systems were identified in quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) systems. For 3D, however, the situation is less favorable as quantum fluctuations are reduced and competing states become more relevant. Here we report a comprehensive study of thermodynamic, magnetic and dielectric properties on single crystalline and pressed-powder samples of PbCuTe2O6, a candidate material for a 3D frustrated quantum spin liquid featuring a hyperkagome lattice. Whereas the low-temperature properties of the powder samples are consistent with the recently proposed quantum spin liquid state, an even more exotic behavior is revealed for the single crystals. These crystals show ferroelectric order at TFE ≈ 1 K, accompanied by strong lattice distortions, and a modified magnetic response—still consistent with a quantum spin liquid—but with clear indications for quantum critical behavior.
