Gifted school activities for students with various disabilities were presented with self-made original content created with newly-developed software—Sound Linker, File Linker, GM Authoring Tool, and Gridmark Content Viewer software—that can handle multimedia-enabled dot codes, originally developed by Gridmark, Inc. Each dot codes can link up to four multimedia mediums—such as a movie—in addition to up to four voices/sounds. Touching dot codes with a speaking-pen enables audio files to be replayed, and touching dot codes with a dot-code reader enables multimedia to be replayed on iOS and Windows OS devices. Software and Post-it® sticker icon overlaid with dot codes and a speaking-pen and dot-code reader are distributed for free to school teachers. All the teachers can now create their own self-made original content and can conduct related school activities without buying any costly software and tools. Basic information on (1) creating original teaching materials using the developed software and (2) its use in schools for students with various difficulties is presented in this chapter.

Abstract As a means of enhancing clinical simulation opportunities for adult-gerontology nurse practitioner students, a series of video simulations were created for use for nurse practitioner education. With funding through the Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) Advanced Nursing Education Workforce grant and partnering with nurse practitioner clinical educators from Optum Health Care, a video simulation focused on the concept of treating an older veteran within a long-term care facility rather than transferring to the acute care setting was developed. The case Treating in Place: Nurse Practitioner-Led Team Management of a Long-Term Care Patient Video involved a nurse practitioner collaborating with a physician, a registered nurse, a social worker, and a family member. The interactive simulation video was developed using the eLearning authoring tool H5P to create learning experiences for students that can be used either in face-to-face classroom experiences or embedded in learning management systems. H5P is a web-based authoring tool that helps faculty build interactive course content. H5P activities provide instant feedback to students, allowing them to self-assess their understanding of the dynamic video simulation case. A faculty handbook that describes the case scenario with the interactive questions and suggested discussion questions is available. The adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner competencies addressed for this case are identified in the faculty handbook. These videos have been widely disseminated and are being included in nurse practitioner curriculum across the country. A QR code with access to direct viewing of the video will be included in the presentation.

Although multiple studies have shown the efficacy of Serious Games (SGs) in improving students' performance and learning experience, the wide use of SGs is yet to be realised. One of the challenges towards the adoption of SGs can be attributed to the complex and costly development process. In this paper, we present ARQS (Authentic Role-playing-game Quest System) tool, an educator-oriented authoring tool we developed for supporting the implementation of a serious role-playing-game (RPG). The authoring tool consists of features that simplify the creation of important RPG components e.g. avatars, virtual world. Furthermore, the authoring process employs block-based programming to configure aspects of RPG such as creating quests. The concept is adopted in order to provide a platform where educators without programming knowledge are able to use. A formative evaluation was conducted with ten educators from secondary and university levels, using a low-fidelity prototype. Outcomes from the evaluation showed promising results, attesting the potential of ARQS as an educational tool for the creation of interactive learning instructions in the form of real-world scenarios embedded within a role-playing-game.

AbstractEnhancing the appearance of physical prototypes with digital elements, also known as mixed prototyping, has demonstrated to be a valuable approach in the product development process. However, the adoption is limited also due to the high time and competence required for authoring the digital contents. This paper presents a content authoring tool that aims to improve the user acceptance by reducing the specific competence required, which is needed for segmentation and UV mapping of the 3D model used to implement a mixed prototype. Part of the tasks related to 3D modelling software, in fact, has been transferred to simpler manual tasks applied onto the physical prototype. Moreover, the proposed tool can recognise these manual inputs thanks to a computer-vision algorithm and automatically manage the segmentation and UV mapping tasks, freeing time for the user in a task that otherwise would require complete engagement. To preliminarily evaluate effectiveness and potential of the tool, it has been used in a case study to build up the mixed prototype of a coffee machine. The result demonstrated that the tool can correctly segment the 3D model of a physical prototype in its relevant parts and generate their corresponding UV maps.
