AbstractWe consider two classes of steady states of the three-dimensional, gravitational Vlasov-Poisson system: the spherically symmetric Antonov-stable steady states (including the polytropes and the King model) and their plane symmetric analogues. We completely describe the essential spectrum of the self-adjoint operator governing the linearized dynamics in the neighborhood of these steady states. We also show that for the steady states under consideration, there exists a gap in the spectrum. We then use a version of the Birman-Schwinger principle first used by Mathur to derive a general criterion for the existence of an eigenvalue inside the first gap of the essential spectrum, which corresponds to linear oscillations about the steady state. It follows in particular that no linear Landau damping can occur in the neighborhood of steady states satisfying our criterion. Verification of this criterion requires a good understanding of the so-called period function associated with each steady state. In the plane symmetric case we verify the criterion rigorously, while in the spherically symmetric case we do so under a natural monotonicity assumption for the associated period function. Our results explain the pulsating behavior triggered by perturbing such steady states, which has been observed numerically.

We prove sharp Lieb-Thirring type inequalities for the eigenvalues of a class of one-dimensional functional difference operators associated to mirror curves. We furthermore prove that the bottom of the essential spectrum of these operators is a resonance state.

In the paper a one-dimensional two-particle quantum system interacted by two identical point interactions is considered. The corresponding Schr\"{o}\-dinger operator (energy operator) $h_\varepsilon$ depending on $\varepsilon,$ is constructed as a self-adjoint extension of the symmetric Laplace operator. The main results of the work are based to the study of the operator $h_\varepsilon.$ First the essential spectrum is described. The existence of unique negative eigenvalue of the Schr\"{o}dinger operator is proved. Further, this eigenvalue and corresponding eigenfunction are found.

Abstract We continue the study of the one-loop partition function of AdS3 gravity with focus on the square-integrability condition on the fluctuating fields. In a previous work we found that the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions follow directly from the L2 condition. Here we rederive the partition function as a ratio of Laplacian determinants by performing a suitable decomposition of the metric fluctuations. We pay special attention to the asymptotics of the fields appearing in the partition function. We also show that in the usual computation using ghost fields for the de Donder gauge, such gauge condition is accessible precisely for square-integrable ghost fields. Finally, we compute the spectrum of the relevant Laplacians in thermal AdS3, in particular noticing that there are no isolated eigenvalues, only essential spectrum. This last result supports the analytic continuation approach of David, Gaberdiel and Gopakumar. The purely essential spectra found are consistent with the independent results of Lee and Delay of the essential spectrum of the TT rank-2 tensor Lichnerowickz Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces.

Abstract We consider a three-particle discrete Schrödinger operator Hμγ (K), K 2 T3 associated to a system of three particles (two fermions and one different particle) interacting through zero range pairwise potential μ > 0 on the three-dimensional lattice Z 3. It is proved that the operator Hμγ (K), ||K|| < δ, for γ > γ0 has at least two eigenvalues in the gap of the essential spectrum for sufficiently large μ > 0.

AbstractTwo recently derived integral equations for the Maxwell transmission problem are compared through numerical tests on simply connected axially symmetric domains for non-magnetic materials. The winning integral equation turns out to be entirely free from false eigenwavenumbers for any passive materials, also for purely negative permittivity ratios and in the static limit, as well as free from false essential spectrum on non-smooth surfaces. It also appears to be numerically competitive to all other available integral equation reformulations of the Maxwell transmission problem, despite using eight scalar surface densities.

Associated with every commuting m-tuples of operators on a complex Hilbert space X is its Aluthge transform. In this paper we show that every commuting m-tuples of operators on a complex Hilbert space X and its Aluthge transform have the same joint essential spectrum. Further, it is shown that the joint essential spectrum of Aluthge transform is contained in the joint essential numerical range of Aluthge transform.

In this paper, we consider the four-particle Schr\"{o}dinger operator corresponding to the Hamiltonian of a system of four arbitrary quantum particles via a three-particle contact interaction potential on a three-dimensional lattice. The finiteness of the number of eigenvalues of the Schr\"{o}dinger operator lying to the left of the essential spectrum for zero value of the total quasi-momentum is proved.
