Abstract The study of elements of rail electromagnetic accelerator (railgun), aimed at studying the mechanism of formation of the dense and free from impurities plasma jet with high kinetic energy is presented. The accelerator was tested with pulsed gas inlet, different shape and length of electrodes, as well as with an additional magnetic field created by external conductors with current. The method controlling of plasma jet parameters on test bench with the use of pressure sensor and infrared video camera was developed. The dependence of the pressure of deuterium plasma flow on distance to the accelerator was investigated. The kinetic energy of the jet was estimated.

The dynamics of a microdrop of dielectric liquid suspended in a magnetic fluid under the action of electric and magnetic fields is studied experimentally. With increasing electric field, the deformation of droplets into oblate spheroid, toroid and curved toroid was observed. At the further increase in the electric field, the bursting of droplets and electrorotation were also investigated. The influence of an additional magnetic field on the droplet dynamics was studied.

Ferrofluid is prepared with the chemical method in order to seal the ship stern shaft. Three types of ferrofluid are obtained. Their magnetic particles all are Fe3O4, but their base solutions are separately water, oil and fluorine ether oil. Experimental results show that the value of saturated magnetic intensity of oil based ferrofluid is higher than the others, and its seal performance is better. Viscosity and density of fluorine ether oil based ferrofluid are the highest. Under the effect of the additional magnetic field, the pressure drops of water or oil sealed by water based ferrofluid are all lower, but the pressure drop of water sealed by oil based ferrofluid is close to an ideal value. Therefore, it has practical value that oil based ferrofluid is used as sealing liquid of ship stern shaft.
