Caecilians (order Gymnophiona) are apodan, snake-like amphibians, usually with fossorial habits, constituting one of the most unknown groups of terrestrial vertebrates. As in orders Anura (frogs, tree frogs and toads) and Caudata (salamanders and newts), the caecilian skin is rich in mucous glands, responsible for body lubrication, and poison glands, producing varied toxins used in defence against predators and microorganisms. Whereas in anurans and caudatans skin gland morphology has been well studied, caecilian poison glands remain poorly elucidated. Here we characterised the skin gland morphology of the caecilian Siphonops annulatus, emphasising the poison glands in comparison to those of anurans and salamanders. We showed that S. annulatus glands are similar to those of salamanders, consisting of several syncytial compartments full of granules composed of protein material but showing some differentiated apical compartments containing mucus. An unusual structure resembling a mucous gland is frequently observed in lateral/apical position, apparently connected to the main duct. We conclude that the morphology of skin poison glands in caecilians is more similar to salamander glands when compared to anuran glands that show a much-simplified structure.

There is a prominent local raised pad called nuptial pad on the forelimb of Chinese brown frog (Rana dybowskii), which is hypothetically concluded as an enhancement of the grip and a spreader of pheromone during the amplexus. In this study, we investigated the immunolocalization and protein expression levels of AR, ERα, ERβ and aromatase in the nuptial pad of R. dybowskii during pre-hibernation and the breeding period. Histologically, the annual development of the nuptial pad in R. dybowskii is manifested as the larger area of specialized mucous gland and the longer length of papillary epidermal projection during the breeding period. AR, ERα, ERβ and aromatase are present in the stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale and the secretory portion of specialized mucous glands during both periods. Western blotting results confirmed that AR, ERα and ERβ protein levels are higher during pre-hibernation than those during the breeding season. These results suggest that nuptial pad is the direct target organ of androgen and estrogen. Androgen may participate in the regulation of annual development and glandular function of nuptial pad, and estrogen may play an endocrine, autocrine or paracrine role during pre-hibernation and the breeding period.

Abstract Objectives To describe the histologic features that are helpful in the diagnosis of the rare bronchiolar adenomas/ciliated muconodular papillary tumors (BAs/CMPTs) during intraoperative consultation. Methods Multi-institutional retrospective review of frozen sections of 18 BAs/CMPTs. Results In 14 of 18 cases, BA/CMPT was the primary reason for sublobar lung resection, and in 4 cases, BA/CMPT was an incidental finding intraoperatively for resections performed for carcinoma in other lobes. There were 11 proximal-type/classic BAs/CMPTs and 7 distal-type/nonclassic BAs/CMPTs. Only 3 (16.7%) of 18 were correctly diagnosed at the time of frozen section, all of which were proximal type/classic. The remainder were diagnosed as adenocarcinoma (n = 7); invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma (n = 1); non–small cell lung carcinoma (n = 1); cystic mucinous neoplasm, favor adenocarcinoma (either mucinous or colloid type) (n = 1); favor adenocarcinoma, cannot exclude CMPT (n = 1); atypical proliferation (n = 2); mucinous epithelial proliferation (n = 1); and mucous gland adenoma (n = 1). Conclusions BA/CMPT can potentially be misdiagnosed as carcinoma during intraoperative consultation. On retrospective review of the frozen sections, the presence of the following may help to avoid misdiagnosis: a mixture of bland ciliated columnar cells, mucinous cells, and, most important, a basal cell layer, as well as a lack of necrosis, significant atypia, and mitoses.

Lip provides an attractive and pleasing appearance to the face. Lip anomaly is by the presence of excess fold or redundant or tissue on side of the lip which is referred as double lip. It can be either congenital or acquired and unilateral or bilateral. Such rare entity can affect either upper lip or lower lip or both as seen in syndrome which can be easily diagnosed clinically and rarely reports were published on congenital double lip. During growth and development, the upper lip possesses an outer cutaneous zone often referred as pars and an inner zone which is known as pars which are the two transverse zones. The non-inflammatory labial mucous gland of the pars and unreasonable abundant tissue results in double lip. Treatment should be carried out by an excision of the and sub tissue, without involvement of the underlying muscle This article is a report of a 10 years old boy with this deformity who presented with the complaint of huge lips causing unaesthetic appearance of face and was surgically managed improving the appearance of the face aesthetically acceptable which in turn improves the confidence level of an individual.

Abstract We report a rare case of adult intussusception caused by an inverted Meckel’s diverticulum with ectopic pancreatic tissue. A 43-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with complaints of abdominal distention, intermittent abdominal pain and nausea that she experienced 3 months ago. Abdominal computed tomography scans demonstrated ileo-ileal intussusception that contained a tumor with fat density as the lead point. Laparoscopic-assisted partial resection of the small intestine was performed. The surgical specimen showed an elongated polypoid lesion invaginated into the intestinal tract indicating an inverted Meckel’s diverticulum. Pathological findings showed a true diverticulum that ran antimesentrically, with tall columnar epithelium, a mucous gland and an islet of Langerhans. The postoperative period was uneventful, and she was discharged on the ninth postoperative day.
