The thermal-convective instability of a stellar atmosphere in the presence of stable solute gradient in Stern’s type configuration is studied in the presence of radiative transfer effect. A criterion for monotonic instability is obtained in terms of the source functions S. The criterion for monotonic instability is found to be unchanged in the presence of radiative transfer and rotation effects. The problem of thermosolutal-convective instability of a hydromagnetic composite medium is also studied to include the frictional effects with neutrals. The criterion derived for monotonic instability in terms of heat-loss function is found to be the same in the presence or absence of the collisional effects.

AbstractThis paper deals with the theoretical investigation of the effect of a magnetic field, rotation and magnetization on a ferromagnetic fluid under varying gravity field. To find the exact solution for a ferromagnetic fluid layer contained between two free boundaries, we have used a linear stability analysis and normal mode analysis method. For the case of stationary convection, a stable solute gradient has a stabilizing effect, while rotation has a stabilizing effect if λ>0 and destabilizing effect if λ<0. Further, the magnetic field is discovered to have both a stabilizing and destabilizing effect for both λ>0 and λ<0. It is likewise discovered that magnetization has a stabilizing effect for both λ>0 and λ<0 in the absence of the stable solute gradient. Graphs have been plotted by giving numerical values of various parameters. In the absence of rotation, magnetic field and stable solute gradient, the principle of exchange of stabilities is found to hold true for certain conditions.

Abstract We show that the global non-linear stability threshold for convection in a double-diffusive couple-stress fluid saturating a porous medium is exactly the same as the linear instability boundary. The optimal result is important because it shows that linearized instability theory has captured completely the physics of the onset of convection. It is also found that couple-stress fluid saturating a porous medium is thermally more stable than the ordinary viscous fluid, and the effects of couple-stress parameter (F ) , solute gradient ( S f ) and Brinkman number ( D a ) on the onset of convection is also analyzed.

Abstract The thermosolutal stability of a layer of the Rivlin-Ericksen fluid in a porous medium is considered under varying gravity conditions. It is found that for stationary convection, medium permeability and suspended particles have a destabilizing/stabilizing effect when gravity increases/decreases. The stable solute gradient has a stabilizing effect on the system.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is used to study the combined effect of solute gradient and magnetic field on dusty couple-stress fluid in the presence of rotation through a porous medium. Design/methodology/approach The perturbation technique (experimental method) is applied in this study. Findings For the case of stationary convection, solute gradient and rotation have stabilizing effect, whereas destabilizing effect is found in dust particles in the system. Couple stress and medium permeability both have dual character to its stabilizing effect in the absence of magnetic field and rotation. Magnetic field succeeded in establishing a stabilizing effect in the absence of rotation. Originality/value The results are discussed by allowing one variable to vary and keeping other variables constant, as well as by drawing graphs.

Double-diffusive convection in a horizontal layer of nanofluid under rotation heated from below is studied. The nanofluid describes the effects of thermophoresis and Brownian diffusion. Based upon perturbations and linear stability theory, the normal mode analysis method is applied to obtain the dispersion relation characterizing the effect of different parameters when both the boundaries are free. Due to thermal expansion, the nanofluid at the bottom will be lighter than the fluid at the top. Thus, this is a top heavy arrangement which is potentially unstable. In this paper we discuss the influences of various non-dimensional parameters such as rotation, solute gradient, thermo- nanofluid Lewis number, thermo-solutal Lewis number, Soret and Dufour parameter on the stability of stationary convection for the case of free-free boundaries. It is observed that rotation and solute gradient have stabilizing influence on the system. Rotation and solute gradient play important role in the thermal convection of fluid layer and has applications in rotating machineries such as nuclear reactors, petroleum industry, biomechanics etc. and solute gradient finds applications in geophysics, food processing, soil sciences, oil reservoir modeling, oceanography etc. A very good agreement is found between the present paper and earlier published results.

AbstractThe thermosolutal instability of Rivlin-Ericksen elasticoviscous rotating fluid permeated with suspended particles (fine dust) and variable gravity field in porous medium in hydromagnetics is considered. By applying normal mode analysis method, the dispersion relation has been derived and solved analytically. It is observed that the rotation, magnetic field, gravity field, suspended particles and viscoelasticity introduce oscillatory modes. For stationary convection, the rotation and stable solute gradient has stabilizing effects and suspended particles are found to have destabilizing effect on the system whereas the medium permeability has stabilizing or destabilizing effect on the system under certain conditions. The magnetic field has destabilizing effect in the absence of rotation whereas in the presence of rotation, magnetic field has stabilizing or destabilizing effect under certain conditions. The effect of rotation, suspended particles, magnetic field, stable solute gradient and medium permeability has also been shown graphically.

An investigation is made on the effect of suspended particles (fine dust) on double-diffusive convection of a compressible Rivlin-Ericksen elastico-viscous fluid. The perturbation equations are analyzed in terms of normal modes after linearizing the relevant set of equations. A dispersion relation governing the effects of viscoelasticity, compressibility, stable solute gradient, and suspended particles is derived. For stationary convection, Rivlin-Ericksen fluid behaves like an ordinary Newtonian fluid due to the vanishing of the viscoelastic parameter. The stable solute gradient compressibility has a stabilizing effect on the system whereas suspended particles hasten the onset of thermosolutal instability. The Rayleigh numbers and the wave numbers of the associated disturbances for the onset of instability as stationary convection are obtained and the behaviour of various parameters on Rayleigh numbers has been depicted graphically. It has been observed that oscillatory modes are introduced due to the presence of viscoelasticity, suspended particles, and stable solute gradient which were not existing in the absence of these parameters.
