THE REPRESENTATION OF SISTERHOOD IN SUSAN GLASPELL'S TRIFLE: PROXEMIC AND KINESIC ANALYSES

Susan Glaspell’s plays have been recognized for its feminist ideologies. The present study traces the representations of the notion of sisterhood in Glaspell’s scrip entitled Trifles by employing Barthes’ semiotics and Fischer-Lichte’s concept of kinesics. Focusing on the gestural and the proxemic signs of the kinesics included in the script, the present study reveals that the notion of sisterhood grows among the female characters in the play through the increasing realization of their similar positions as women in patriarchal society. This development of solidarity among the female characters implies a strong feminist ideology about how women should stand together in facing oppression in male-dominated structures.

READING POVERTY IN MODERNIST LITERATURE: RIFFATERRIAN SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS ON T.S ELIOT'S MORNING AT THE WINDOW

The idea of poverty as the theme has been recurrently used in literature. However, it is rarely come across in Modernist Literature. Accordingly, this study examines poverty as the theme, which is also the main issue in a poem written by T.S. Eliot entitled Morning at the Window. To dive deep into the main issue of the poem, it uses a close-reading method. It focuses on how the text of the poem represents the main issue in which the poem tries to convey. To come into the results of the study, three aspects from Semiotics of Poetry by Michael Riffaterre are used, which are unsustainable expressions, heuristic and hermeneutic reading, and matrix. Analyzing these three aspects, the results show that the representation of poverty as the main issue is evidently stated. The diction in the poem successfully creates the images and set the tone that correlates with poverty.

SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND RELIGIOUS ASPECT IN MOSQUE FUNDRAISER

This study described and analyzed the form and types of speech in fundraising activity as well as to identify social, cultural, and religious aspect in it. The observation was carried out in Wirolegi Village, Sumbersari District, Jember Regency. This study used a phenomenological perspective which viewed that fundraising activity was a social reality known by the public. This study used anthropolinguistic approach which viewed that people's linguistics activities (speech) were related to the social and cultural systems of the community. To examine the forms and types of speech, this study used Searle's speech act theory. This study resulted a finding that the utterances of the fundraiser were about expressive and commissive speech acts. Thus, the language activity within fundraising program was an action that was clearly and indirectly contained in his speech. In its social aspect, the speech contained a binding from the speaker to the interlocutor which could contribute to their social and religious aspect.

LITERACY AND IDENTITY: FROM LIM KIM HOK, AND KHO PING HO TO THE CONTEMPORARY INDONESIAN LITERATURE

The history and progress of Indonesian literature become a piece of authentic evidence for ethnic Chinese. Both of them can exert influence on contemporary Indonesian literature at large. It can be seen in the history of Indonesian literacy, romance, martial arts stories (Cerita silat), and Chinese literary writing styles which are still used nowadays. This shows how ethnic Chinese education and Hybrid (Malay-Chinese) in Indonesia have developed rapidly. Before this country was formed into a nation-state with cultural institutions, ethnic Chinese had undergone literary expressions. Moreover, culture at that time was widely accepted for Malay nations, Java, Balinese, etc. Conversely, many identity challenges and contestation during Dutch colonial, Old Order, and New Order pressed the ethnic Chinese in various ways. In addition, this can be understood as a part of cultural exchange. Hence, Indonesian literature is currently strongly influenced by the contact of Malay and Chinese literature.

TO DISCLOSE A LESS GENERIC PRONOUN: ADDRESSING NON-BINARY "THEY"

Since the 13th century singular they have been used freely to account to the lack of gender-fair pronoun in the English language. Singular they that is normally employed as a pronominal non-possessive indefinite singular pronoun, in contrast to an expression on he/she generic. This study aims to provide a linear timeline that accounts to the usage of singular they from 13th century to date. Discerns through the scope of Diachronic studies. This study offers an analysis of context with diachronic relevance. The study uses argumentative cross-examination methods, by combing previous findings conducted by researchers who had undertook and attempted to write under similar theme .The results of this study show periodical changes from 13th century to the next, implying that sociocultural changes may be reflected in linguistic changes. The article postulates some that can be interpreted as lenient acceptance for the application of singular they. This study concludes despite the constant rejection singular they are a proper substitute for the gender-neutral pronoun in the English language due to two major advantages for singular they could afford neutrality and naturalness element in comparison to neologism.

A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF SUMPAH POCONG AMONG MADURANESE PEOPLE: A CASE STUDY OF POLAGAN DISTRICT, SAMPANG-MADURA

Sumpah pocong is a tradition that is still performed by the Madurese community, especially in the Polagan Village, Madegan, Sampang. This study aims to seek the meaning contained in sumpah pocong based on the signs in sumpah pocong also the concept of signifier and signified by Ferdinand de Saussure. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative by utilizing field studies through interviews and direct documentation in Polagan Village. The results of this study indicate that the community has different opinions and views in interpreting sumpah pocong.

MODERNISASI, LAYAR MONITOR, DAN PERUBAHAN BUDAYA

Layar monitor menyebabkan percepatan industri di era modernisasi. Hal ini membuat banyak budaya yang berubah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perubahan budaya yang terjadi di Desa Sumbermulyo dengan menggunakan metode etnografi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan melakukan observasi langsung dan wawancara mendalam. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah materialisme budaya yang digagas oleh Marvin Harris. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa budaya yang terjadi pada masyarakat Desa Sumbermulyo sangat dipengaruhi oleh perubahan perilaku etis di masyarakat. Beberapa perubahan budaya yang dianggap hilang atau memudar adalah permainan tradisional yang mulai ditinggalkan. Seperti contoh, bermain di sungai, mengaktifkan langgar dan sanggar, berkurangnya aktivitas karang taruna, dan sebagainya. Budaya yang masih lestari hingga saat ini adalah Mahabaturrasul. Namun, penyelenggara masih didominasi oleh kalangan lansia yang aktif sejak muda. Perubahan budaya juga menyebabkan tingkat obesitas maupun penyakit lainnya menjadi tinggi. Penyebab perubahan budaya diakibatkan dari perilaku sedentari yang meliputi banyaknya aktivitas di dalam rumah akibat seringnya melihat layar monitor.

ANALISIS RESEPSI TERHADAP KREATIVITAS KEKEYI PUTRI CANTIKA DI YOUTUBE

Kreativitas merupakan hal yang esensial di era milenial ini. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh salah satu beauty vlogger, yakni Kekeyi Putri Cantika di platform Youtube. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis resepsi pada video yang diunggah oleh Kekeyi Putri Cantika di Youtube. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori resepsi Stuart Hall untuk menemukan pemaknaan dominan, pemaknaan negosisasi, dan pemaknaan oposisi pada video yang diunggah oleh Kekeyi di Youtube. Peneliti memilih untuk menelaah isu berikut karena terdapat banyak artis dan beauty vlogger yang mengikuti trend 25K Makeup Challenge. Trend tersebut dibuat pertama kali oleh Kekeyi. Viralnya video Kekeyi di Youtube karena keunikan Kekeyi yang menggunakan balon berisi air untuk digunakan sebagai pengganti beauty blender.

TEORI EKOKRITIK SASTRA: KAJIAN TERHADAP KEMUNCULAN PENDEKATAN EKOLOGI SASTRA YANG DIPELOPORI OLEH CHERYLL GLOTFELTY

Artikel yang berjudul Teori Ekokritik Sastra: Kajian terhadap Kemunculan Pendekatan Ekologi Sastra yang dipelopori Cheryll Glotfelty ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji dan membahas lebih lanjut mengenai latar belakang kemunculan teori ekokritik sastra juga definisi serta istilah-istilah kunci di dalamnya. Selain itu, artikel ini juga membahas lebih dalam mengenai inti pembahasan dan isu yang biasa diteliti dalam kajian yang menggunakan teori ekokritik sastra beserta cara penerapannya. Sebagai salah satu teori yang lumayan baru, teori ekokritik sastra mencakup topik dan isu yang sangat luas sehingga membuat kajian menjadi lebih fleksibel, meski demikian masih cukup jarang yang mengaplikasikan teori ekokritik sastra terutama dalam dunia kajian sastra di Indonesia. Maka dari itu, artikel ini mencoba untuk memberikan penjelasan singkat mengenai ekokritik sastra, pentingnya teori ekokritik sastra sehubungan dengan masalah lingkungan yang tengah dihadapi manusia, juga macam-macam cara penerapan yang diharapkan bisa membantu pembaca dan calon peneliti.

PROBLEMATISASI KELOMPOK SUBALTERN DAN AMERICAN DREAM DALAM NOVEL THE BUDDHA IN THE ATTIC KARYA JULIE OTSUKA

Novel The Buddha in the Attic karya Julie Otsuka merupakan novel yang memuat fenomena migrasi para perempuan Jepang sebagai picture brides di Amerika Serikat. Berawal dari sebuah foto yang menyimbolkan kesuksesan American Dream, para perempuan ini mengadu nasib di daratan yang selama ini dikenal dengan gaung kesuksesan yang ditawarkan oleh American Dream. Akan tetapi, para picture brides, termasuk para imigran Jepang di Amerika, mengalami diskriminasi rasial. Dari kondisi ini, muncul sebuah permasalahan lain yang dialami oleh picture brides, termasuk didalamnya para imigran Jepang, yang mengalami kesusahan dalam mendapatkan kesempatan memperoleh kesuksesan di Amerika. Isu ini kemudian mengarah ke permasalahan yang lebih mendalam, yaitu mengenai problematika American Dream dari sudut pandang picture brides dengan American Dream dari sudut pandang warga Amerika itu sendiri. Untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut, studi ini menerapkan teori subaltern milik Gayatri Spivak sebagai kerangka pemikiran teoretis. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, nampak bahwa ada fenomena propaganda American Dream yang mereduksi nilai-nilai American Dream. American Dream yang menekankan life, liberty dan the pursuit of happiness layaknya tercantum dalam The Declaration of Independence pada kenyataannya digunakan sebagai agenda politik oleh pemerintah Amerika Serikat untuk menjaga homogenitas budaya masyarakat Amerika.
