Abstract Traditional Design for Assembly methods are limited to part sizes between a few millimeters to a few tens of centimeters in overall size and to part weights under a few kilograms. Parts in the range of a meter in overall size and weighing a few tens of kilograms are examined in this paper. An experimental plan separates weight, mass and inertia and correlates these properties with assembly difficulty and time. When windage, part flexibility and operator fatigue are absent, a set of three parameters serve to model these effects on human assembly performance. Adaptation of this result is made to extend a Design for Assembly methodology.

Some experiences of violence directly or indirectly lived by the population during the Ivorian political-military crisis, helped put center stage the issue of the feeling of insecurity, particularly in Abidjan. This work addresses the question of crisis’ impact by comparing the before and after crisis feelings of insecurity. From 354 individuals surveyed before the crisis 93 were re-interviewed during an after crisis investigation. The sample was built according to an experimental plan of eight groups and interviewed by means of a multidimensional questionnaire. Results indicate an increase of after crisis feeling of insecurity as well as a rise of “bad faith of the people” and “Ineffectiveness of the judiciary” among the perceived main elements of insecurity.

The Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration was established during the fourth session of the Provisional Intergovernmental Committee for the Movement of Migrants from Europe which met in Geneva from October 13 to 21, 1952. Twenty member governments sent official delegations to this session, which had been called to discuss the need for the continuing existence of the migration committee beyond the twelve month period ending December 1952 and to decide whether the experimental plan of attack on Europe's chronic surplus population problem during the previous year should be broadened or abandoned. Count Justo Giusti del Giaro (Italy) was unanimously elected as chairman and A. L. Nutt (Australia), N. Hadji Vassiliou (Greece) and Fernando Donoso (Chile) as first and second vice chairmen and rapporteur, respectively. During the nine-day conference, the committee voted to change its name to Intergovernmental Committee for European Migration (ICEM); to continue the activities of the committee in Geneva through, 1953 and to make plans during the coming year for the future; to set themselves the 1953 target of moving 120,000 of western Europe's surplus to new homes overseas; to authorize the committee to attempt to improve the selection and settlement services involved in the movement of migrants in the expectation that this would substantially speed up and increase movement;, to establish a $2,147,000 administrative and a $34,608,475 operational budget to effect the 1953 movements; and to continue investigations and discussions on the possibilities of securing outside financial and technical assistance for the establishment of land settlement projects in immigration countries.

In tomographic imaging, the traditional process consists of an expert and an operator collecting data, the expert working on the reconstructed slices and drawing conclusions. The quality of reconstructions depends heavily on the quality of the collected data, except that, in the traditional process of imaging, the expert has very little influence over the acquisition parameters, experimental plan or the collected data. It is often the case that the expert has to draw limited conclusions from the reconstructions, or adapt a research question to data available. This method of imaging is static and sequential, and limits the potential of tomography as a research tool. In this paper, we propose a more dynamic process of imaging where experiments are tailored around a sample or the research question; intermediate reconstructions and analysis are available almost instantaneously, and expert has input at any stage of the process (including during acquisition) to improve acquisition or image reconstruction. Through various applications of 2D, 3D and dynamic 3D imaging at the FleX-ray Laboratory, we present the unexpected journey of exploration a research question undergoes, and the surprising benefits it yields.

As a part of the ORVEAL project, the brand new series of compound rocket engines MEC-80 is subjected to a line of restrictions imposed by the experiment plan, which add an extra weight to the definitely expensive phase of the experimental development of the new types of rocket engine. The direct way to reduce the development time and cost of the new powering systems was found in tediously defining the experimental plan, the variables involved, the nature of the pay-off polynomials and the technological solutions. For the specific case the technological and reliability related constraints are explored, that led to the definition of a reversed-vertical configuration of the thrust frame of the test stand and of the scale and support system of the thrust frame, with position-defined sensors for acquiring the thrust tensor value. Simplicity and reliability were the main requirements in designing and manufacturing the components of the test stand in the new environment of the recently enhanced CEZAR proving grounds of ADDA Ltd. in Fagaras, Transylvania. The ORVEAL research is granted by Romanian UEFISCDI financing authority.
