The moisture content of stored rice is dependent on the surrounding and environmental factors which in turn affect the quality and economic value of the grains. Therefore, the moisture content of grains needs to be measured frequently to ensure that optimum conditions that preserve their quality are maintained. The current state of the art for moisture measurement of rice in a silo is based on grab sampling or relies on single rod sensors placed randomly into the grain. The sensors that are currently used are very localized and are, therefore, unable to provide continuous measurement of the moisture distribution in the silo. To the authors’ knowledge, there is no commercially available 3D volumetric measurement system for rice moisture content in a silo. Hence, this paper presents results of work carried out using low-cost wireless devices that can be placed around the silo to measure changes in the moisture content of rice. This paper proposes a novel technique based on radio frequency tomographic imaging using low-cost wireless devices and regression-based machine learning to provide contactless non-destructive 3D volumetric moisture content distribution in stored rice grain. This proposed technique can detect multiple levels of localized moisture distributions in the silo with accuracies greater than or equal to 83.7%, depending on the size and shape of the sample under test. Unlike other approaches proposed in open literature or employed in the sector, the proposed system can be deployed to provide continuous monitoring of the moisture distribution in silos.

In this article we report the case of a 26-year-old boy suffering from perforation of Meckel's diverticulum (MD), a rare complication of the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract (1). This congenital condition can remain asymptomatic for a long time and sometimes it can get complicated with diverticulitis, formation of enteroliths, neoplasms and rarely perforation as in this case. A preoperative radiological assessment is of fundamental importance for a correct diagnostic and therapeutic management of the patient. In this article we show the typical tomographic imaging features of this infrequent complication, in order to help radiologists in detecting it.

AbstractPanoramic radiography is an extraoral radiography modality that provides two-dimensional information about the teeth and the maxillofacial skeleton. It is a valuable adjunct for diagnosis and treatment planning as it facilitates one-time imaging of all teeth, the mandible, parts of maxilla including a large part of the maxillary sinus, hard palate and temporomandibular joints (TMJs). As a tomographic image is prone to errors and artefacts, a good quality radiograph in most patients can be achieved by following the standard rules and through proper patient positioning. In this article, we will discuss indications for panoramic radiography imaging, steps in taking the radiograph, as well as limitations, pitfalls and complications of the procedure. Tomographic imaging of temporomandibular joint is also discussed.

Metformin is widely used to treat diabetes, but induces changes in glucose uptake in both normal organs and tumors. Here, we review the effects of metformin on the uptake of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) in tissues and tumors, and its influence on 18F-FDG positron emission tomographic imaging (18F-FDG PET), as well as the mechanisms involved. This is an important issue, because metformin has diverse effects on tissue uptake of 18F-FDG, and this can affect the quality and interpretation of PET images. Metformin increases glucose uptake in the gastrointestinal tract, cerebral white matter, and the kidney, while regions of the cerebrum associated with memory show decreased glucose uptake, and the myocardium shows no change. Hepatocellular carcinoma and breast cancer show increased glucose uptake after metformin administration, while thyroid cancer shows decreased uptake, and colon and pancreatic cancers show no change. A high-energy diet increases 18F-FDG uptake, but this effect is blocked by metformin. Withdrawal of metformin 48 h before PET image acquisition is widely recommended. However, based on our review of the literature, we propose that the differentiation of metformin discontinuation could be reasonable. But future clinical trials are still needed to support our viewpoint.
