Abstract:Commuting of residents in big city often brings tidal traffic pressure or congestions. Understanding the causes behind this phenomenon is of great significance for urban space optimization. Various spatial big data make possible the fine description of urban residents travel behaviors, and bring new approaches to related studies. The present study focuses on two aspects: one is to obtain relatively accurate features of commuting behaviors by using mobile phone data, and the other is to simulate commuting behaviors of residents through the agent-based model and inducing backward the causes of congestion. Taking the Baishazhou area of Wuhan, a local area of a mega city in China, as a case study, travel behaviors of commuters are simulated: the spatial context of the model is set up using the existing urban road network and by dividing the area into travel units; then using the mobile phone call detail records (CDR) of a month, statistics of residents' travel during the four time slots in working day mornings are acquired and then used to generated the OD matrix of travels at different time slots; and then the data are imported into the model for simulation. By the preset rules of congestion, the agent-based model can effectively simulate the traffic conditions of each traffic intersection, and can also induce backward the causes of traffic congestion using the simulation results and the OD matrix. Finally, the model is used for the evaluation of road network optimization, which shows evident effects of the optimizing measures adopted in relieving congestion, and thus also proves the value of this method in urban studies.

Abstract An agent-based model is proposed and tested. This model aims to simulate agency as conceptualized in Bandura's (Am Psychol 37:122–147, 1982; Organ Behav Hum Decis Process 50:248–287; Annu Rev Psychol 52: 1–26) Social cognitive theory. Social cognitive theory has been used to explain the continued underrepresentation of females in certain fields, most notably fields that are associated with engineering and technology. The theory proposes that agents acquire information from four different sources, and then, through a process of reciprocal interaction, these agents develop their perception of self-efficacy. In this study, an agent-based model is used to model this interaction. The output from the simulation supports the validity of the model used and illustrates how agency "emerges" from the triadic interaction. The model successfully simulates several of the theorized aspects of social cognitive theory. The simulation results reveal that even small gendered differences can lead to female misrepresentation in certain fields. The model also shows that female discouragement plays a larger role than male encouragement in female underrepresentation. The implications of these results are discussed. Finally, the limitations of the model are discussed, along with directions for future research.

Purpose – This paper suggests an agent based model of economic behavior based on which it argues that the Islamic charity of Zakat can be rationalized as it significantly reduces wealth inequalities.  Design/methodology/approach – An Agent Based Model (ABM) of wealth distribution (Wilensky, 1998) is configured to introduce Zakat in the model. Simulations were run in the model with ordered and random distribution of Zakat charity and wealth distribution pattern compared with the standard simulation without Zakat. Findings – The impact of this very small charity on the part of the rich (2.5% of net wealth) showed significant impact on wealth distribution pattern as it changed the power law distribution into normal distribution of wealth. Practical implications – The results emphasize non-conventional handling of the economic problem of poverty and wealth signifying the importance of faith based policing Originality/value – The paper contributes an agent based simulation which is a relatively newer technique to study human behavior and is commensurate to complexity theory. Its use is relatively rare in Islamic Economics and the paper is the first to propose a decentralzied model simulation of Islamic charity of Zakat.
