Abstract The European lobster (Homarus gammarus) forms the base of an important fishery along the coasts of Europe. However, stocks have been in decline for many years, prompting new regulations in the fishery and also restocking efforts. An important feature of any restocking effort is the assessment of success in the number of released juveniles that stay and become adult over time. Here, we tested the power of a SNP DNA marker panel developed for population assignment to correctly infer parentage on the maternal side of lobster larvae, in the absence of known fathers, using lobsters included in a current restocking effort on the Swedish west coast. We also examined the power to reconstruct the unknown paternal genotypes, and examined the number of fathers for each larval clutch. We found that the 96-SNP panel, despite only containing 78 informative markers, allowed us to assign all larvae to the correct mother. Furthermore, with 10 genotyped larvae or more, confident paternal genotypes could be reconstructed. We also found that 15 out of 17 clutches were full siblings, whereas two clutches had two fathers. To our knowledge, this is the first time a SNP panel of this size has been used to assess parentage in a crustacean restocking effort. Our conclusion is that the panel works well, and that it could be an important tool for the assessment of restocking success of H. gammarus in the future.

Chapter 4 focuses on the dual-use phenomenon of comparison with an indeterminate pronoun in Japanese (and other languages) and considers the similarities and differences between at-issue comparative meaning (i.e. individual comparison) and a CI comparative meaning (i.e. noteworthy comparison). Although an individual comparison and a noteworthy comparison are compositionally and dimensionally different, there is a striking parallelism in terms of the scale structure. The chapter explains the similarities and differences between the two kinds of comparison in a systematic way. It also considers the role of scalarity and comparison in a discourse context and argues that they provide a way of signaling to what extent an at-issue utterance contributes to the goal of the conversation. The timing of signaling information on noteworthiness in a discourse and its pragmatic effect are also discussed.

Chapter 1 introduces the aim and the target phenomenon of this book, that is, the dual-use phenomenon of scalar modifiers and the meaning and use of pragmatic scalar modifiers. After a brief overview of the current views on the notion of conventional implicatures (CIs) and the semantics/pragmatics interface, and observation of data for the dual-use phenomenon of pragmatic scalar modifiers, this book raises questions concerning (i) the similarities and differences between at-issue scalar meanings and CI (not-at-issue) scalar meanings, (ii) variations in pragmatic scalar modifiers, (iii) the interpretations of embedded pragmatic scalar modifiers, and (iv) the historical development of pragmatic scalar modifiers. It then also briefly outlines the core ideas and analytical directions used for answering these questions.

This chapter introduces ethical issues that arise in the context of biosecurity: policies and actions intended to prevent the development or emergence, or mitigate the consequences, of serious biological threats. These threats could include deliberate biological weapon attacks (bioterrorism), pandemics, emerging infectious diseases, or major laboratory accidents. The basic values that underpin these public health concerns are first introduced. Ethical issues that arise before, during, and following a biosecurity crisis are then examined, including issues of resource allocation, dual-use research, and the possibility of quarantine. Their resolution requires trade-offs among different ethical values, including utility, fairness, and liberty.

Abstract Two commonly used population structure software packages are freely available for breed authentication, Structure and Admixture. Structure uses a Bayesian approach to model population structure, while Admixture uses a frequentist approach. More recently, an allele frequency method has been updated to use quadratic programming to constrain the multiple linear regression coefficients of the regression of genotype count (divided by two) on the matrix of allele frequencies for each known breed or line. This constraint forced coefficients to sum to one and be greater than or equal to 0 and less than or equal to 1. The goal of this research was to compare and contrast these three methods to determine the breed/line authenticity for each of the five genetic lines. These five lines included Large White, Landrace, a lean Duroc, a meat quality Duroc, and a Pietrain line. Only animals with a 50K SNP panel were used in this analysis. Analyses were run five times for Structure and Admixture to check repeatability. The allele frequency method did not need to be repeated because it remains the same as long as the reference allele frequency matrix stays constant. For Structure, results of breed composition were inconsistent across replicates. Structure separated at least one of the maternal lines in three out of the five replicates with only 500 animals and kept the Duroc lines together as one population. Only 500 animals could be utilized in each run of Structure due to computational restraints. Admixture was very consistent across runs for each animal, but also failed to separate the two Duroc lines, instead splitting one of the two maternal lines. Finally, the allele frequency method split all five lines correctly and was 100% reproducible as long as the reference allele frequency matrix stays the same across runs.
