The Potential of Index Based Flood Insurance in South Asia: A case study on de-risking disasters in Bihar and Bangladesh

Qandeel Baloch, a controversial Pakistani social media star, was killed by her brother in 2016 in the name of “honor.” Using Qandeel’s honor killing as a case study, this chapter analyzes honor killings to gain a better understanding of what they are, their prevalence, and the factors attributable to them, particularly in South Asia. The chapter also examines the role that social media has played globally in giving marginalized populations a voice and platform online while simultaneously making them more vulnerable to cyberbullying, harassment, and, in Qandeel’s case, even death. Through contextual and empirical accounts, the chapter cautions readers to not think of honor killings as a faith-based problem confined to a particular geographical region but, rather, as a larger epidemic that is strongly rooted in a culture that persists, to a small extent, in developed countries as well.

The present research paper discusses the pivotal role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education which is gaining currency in the new era of globalism as the telecom revolution has hastened the pace of globalization and vice-versa; along with the catalyst role ICT-enabled education plays in promoting inclusive growth and human development for all. These smart tools of the emerging smart economy would help to promote mass literacy and also narrow inter, as well as intra-generational gaps. Most importantly, it will provide ‘second opportunities' to the generation that missed them in the first place, thus helping adult learners, particularly the employed and women; thus attempting to reduce gender inequities; particularly in South Asia and the Indian sub-continent. The case study of the famous open University, namely Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in India is being studies as a case of sustainable development and inclusive growth as it ‘reaches the unreached' and untouched and marginalized segments of society.

Neuropsychiatry as a medical specialty is significantly underrepresented in India, with neurology and psychiatry giving each other a wide berth in many of the country’s regions. This chapter reviews the state of neuropsychiatric services in India and South Asia, before moving on to explore what constitutes a Comprehensive Neuropsychiatry Programme (CNP). This encompasses education and research into neuropsychiatric outcomes, advocacy at a governmental level, and community-engendered activities, all with a view to attaining optimal levels of participation in activities of daily living (ADLs), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and various social and educational milestones. The model employed by a multidisciplinary team for use in developing nations is then described, along with a case study to demonstrate best practice.
