This study set out to clarify the association of apathy and depression in dementia as well as apathy's association with basic (ADLs) and instrumental (IADLs) activities of daily living and quality of life. 68 outpatients with mild dementia were assessed on apathy, depression, global cognition, traditional ADLs/IADLs, complex daily living activities requiring intact executive functioning (DAD: Disability Assessment for Dementia Scale), and quality of life. The sample was stratified into high and low global cognition groups and compared. While no relationship was found between scores on apathy and depression in the high cognition group, there was a significant relationship between apathy and depression in the low cognition group. Further, high and low cognition groups differed in the relationship between apathy and ability to perform basic and complex activities of daily living. Specifically, in the high cognition group, increased apathy was correlated with diminished ability to perform traditional IADLs as well as those activities requiring intact executive functioning (i.e., DAD). In the low cognition group, increased apathy was associated with poor performance on traditional ADLs and IADLs, but was not related to performance on independent daily activities demanding good executive functioning. Finally, increased apathy was significantly associated with worse quality of life, but this held for the high cognition group only, suggesting that dementia patients with better cognition have insight into their deficits and, perhaps, experience poor quality of life as a result.

Objective : Doingactivities of daily living can bring independence for the elderly. It can also maintain their health and social participation. However, experience of falls and fear of falling can affect the health and personal social life of the elderly. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between falls and fear of falling with activities of daily living in older adults. Materials and methods : Four hundred and fifty elderly persons were enrolled in this cross-sectional study using cluster sampling. Demographic variables, Fall Efficacy Scale- International (FES-I) and questionnaires related to the study of activities of daily living were employed. To investigate advanced activities of daily living, open-ended questions were used. The history of falls within the last 12 months was investigated. Results : Mean score of basic activities of daily living in the elderly being studied was 15.49±1.74, and 95.4% of them were independent in doing these activities.Mean score of instrumental activities of daily living was 11.30±3.36, and 71.5% of them were independent in doing these activities. Participation of elderly persons in social activities was reported to be 77.9%. There was a significant relationship between activities of daily living (basic, instrumental, and advanced) and falls and fear of falling (p<0.05). Conclusion : Falls and fear of falling reduce the independence of elderly persons in doing activities of daily living. Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science Vol.20(2) 2021 p.420-425

Developing useful objects for a functional reeducation of senior citizens persons about the basic activities of daily living must be conceptualized considering theories, techniques, and approaches in methodology, based on ecologically bearable structures, economically viable, and socially equitable. Consequently, the present chapter has the objective to state the criteria and strategies of a sustainable design, from a detailed study of applicability of 1) user-product interaction, observation, understanding, dimensional relationship, and evaluation; 2) creative process, identification, ideation, definition, prototypes, evaluation, and structuration; 3) technical specifications, structure, sustainability, ergonomics, aesthetics, and evaluation; 4) manufacture method, sustainability, production method, life cycle, capital assets, official norms, and optimization. A contextual and conceptual analysis is proposed for the beginning, development, and conclusion of the projects so as to reestablish the relationship between natural processes and human activity.
