The guayulins are a family of sesquiterpene compounds that consist of an isoprenoid nucleus substituted either by trans-cinnamic or p-anisic acid, and are present only in the resinous fraction of the rubber plant guayule (Parthenium argentatum, Gray). While the natural role of the guayulins remains enigmatic, they may serve as a defense function against other plants or herbivores by virtue of the accumulation of cinnamic acid. Prior research has suggested seasonal variation in guayulin content, which has been shown to decrease as winter arrives in two different varieties. In the present study, the effect of guayulins has been evaluated in 13 different accessions cultivated under the same conditions during autumn. A general reduction in guayulin content was found in the stems from all varieties between the September and November harvest, which was accompanied by an increase in the resin content. With respect to individual guayulins, while guayulin A was the most prominent member during most of the year, guayulin C had more prominence when temperature started to decrease. In this seasonal period, the production of each member of the guayulin family in the leaves was very balanced.

This paper explored the effect of MDI, UF and FRW content on the mechanical and fire retardant property of straw based panels with surface alkali liquor processing. In order to manufacture the straw based panel with high quality, low toxic and fire retardant, the interface of wheat-straw was treated with alkaline liquid under the optimal treating condition: alkaline liquid concentration was 0.4-0.8%, alkaline dosage was 1:2.5-1:4.5, alkaline-treated time was 12h-48h.The physical and mechanical properties of wheat-straw boards after treated could satisfy the China national standard. And the variance analysis of the fire retardant property of straw based panel showed that TTI, pkHRR and peak value appearance time were not affected by the MDI, UF and FRW content significantly. The results of orthogonal test showed that the optimized processing condition was MDI content as 4%, UF resin content as 7% and the FRW content as 10%.

ABSTRACTPreparation of high density graphite materials from coal tar pitch was investigated. The effect of β-resin content on the mechanical properties of graphite solid prepared from semi-coke, which was prepared by wet milling method, was examined. β-Resin content was effective for fabrication of green bodies without lamination and for improving the mechanical properties of graphite materials.

Composites of phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin/graphite reinforced by milled carbon fibers (MCFs) for bipolar plates are obtained by hot compression molding. The raw materials of the MCF particles, PF resin powder and graphite powder are simply dry powder ball milled and mixed. The effects of PF resin content and the content, granularity and surface treatment methods, such as air oxidation and Fenton/ultraviolet (UV) liquid-phase oxidation of MCFs on the electrical conductivity and flexural strength of the composites are measured by methods of four-point probe technique and three point flexural test, and the fracture patterns of the composites are analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicate that the electrical conductivity decreases and flexural strength increases with the increase of PF resin content. Especially, the values of electrical conductivity and flexural strength can reach 165.28 S.cm-1 and 55.11MPa respectively when the PF resin content was 17% in weight. The properties of composites reinforced by air oxidation treated MCFs are better than those by liquid-phase oxidation treated one. The electrical conductivity and flexural strength of the composites are 208.12S.cm-1 and 57.44 MPa when they reinforced by 5% MCFs which treated by air oxidation at 450 . Compared with the nonreinfoced composites, the properties of reinforced composites increase 25.92% in electrical conductivity and 4.23% in flexural strength.
