Abstract Polypropylene/exfoliated graphite nanoplatelet (xGnP) composites reinforced with 2 wt.% nano-magnesia (n-MgO) have been successfully fabricated using an injection moulding machine. In the present study, the thermal properties and morphological structure of the composites were investigated. The XRD patterns of the composites showed xGnP and n-MgO peaks, and the intensity of the xGnP peaks increased with increased concentration in a polypropylene matrix. In addition, the SEM micrographs revealed a good dispersion of filler within the matrix. The nanocomposites showed better thermal stability than the pristine polymer. The improvement in onset temperature compared to virgin PP was found to be 3.6% for 100 wt.% PP, 4% for PP/1xGnP/2n-MgO, 5.5% for PP/2.5xGnP/2n-MgO, and 5.9% for PP/5xGnP/2n-MgO, PP/10xGnP/2n-MgO. In contrast, the crystallinity was reduced by the addition of fillers.

The objective of this research was to investigate thermal stability and dynamic mechanical behavior of nano-SiO2/phenol formaldehyde resin (PF) nanocomposites with various nano-SiO2 at 2 wt% loading content. The nano-SiO2/PF nanocomposites were fabricated by two-roll compounding and compression molding technology. The storage modulus (E′) at the starting point of 50 was increased by adding various nano-SiO2 into PF matrix. The E′ of the nanocomposite with only 2 wt% of SiO2 synthesized under ultrasonic irradiation (U-SiO2) was 2 times higher than that of the control PF. Thermal expansion and the coefficient of thermal expansion of nano-SiO2 loaded nanocomposites were lower than that of the control PF in the range of 100–200 and 200–250 . Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the thermal stability of nanocomposites was evidently enhanced. In comparison, U-SiO2 reinforced nanocomposites showed higher thermal properties than those reinforced by mesoporous silica (SBA-15) and SiO2 synthesized by stirring (S-SiO2).

The dehydration of polysaccharides fraction in the presence of acid catalysts, is a chemical process in which results as secondary product humic matter. In our work, the humic acid mixture was for the first time based on our knowledge extracted from defatted microalgae biomass rich in polysaccharides by standard alkali treatment, followed by precipitation at acidic pH. The dried humic acid mixture has been characterized using infrared spectroscopic measurements (FT-IR). Exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) were used as new adsorbents for this type of humic acids mixture, their adsorption being investigated. The effect of several parameters such as: contact time, concentration of humic acid mixture, concentration of xGnP, temperature and pH of the solutions were studied. The process of adsorption took place with good results, in the following conditions: at a concentration of humic acid mixture of 18.6 mg L-1, an xGnP amount of 0.01 mg in 25 mL of solution, at a temperature of 25 and at acidic pH values, in aqueous solution.
