In the last chapter, we discuss how advanced multimedia technologies are used in distance learning systems, including multimedia authoring and presentation, Web-based learning, virtual environments, interactive video, and systems on mobile devices. On the other hand, we believe pedagogic theory should be incorporated into the design of distance learning systems to add learning efficiency. Thus, we point out some suggestions to the designers of future distance learning systems.

This special issue of the Knowledge Management & E-Learning: an international journal(KM&EL) aims to stimulate interest in the web based issues in both teaching and learning, expose natural collaboration among the authors and readers, inform the larger research community of the interest and importance of this area and create a forum for evaluating innovations and challenges. We intend to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in developing and enhancing web-based learning environment. The objectives for this attempt are to provide a forum for discussion of ideas and techniques developed and used in web based learning. In addition the issue can also be used for educators and developers to discuss requirements for web-based education. Both theoretical papers and papers reporting implementation models, technology used and practical results are included in the issue.

The purpose of this chapter is to show how storytelling can be used as an effective pedagogical model for enhancing learning in a community of practice (CoP) using Web-based tools. CoPs provide opportunities for learning by sharing knowledge and experience. Storytelling can make the knowledge and experience sharing discourses more engaging. However, crafting engaging stories remains a challenge. Movement oriented design (MOD) paradigm provides a framework for creating effective story plots using principles of good storytelling. Web-based tools are being used for enhancing interaction in CoPs, and now more responsive systems can be created by using Web 2.0 frameworks such as AJAX. Storytelling can be introduced as a mode of discourse in CoPs using existing text and multimedia authoring systems. However, by creating new Web 2.0 tools for story development using the MOD paradigm will allow almost anyone to create engaging educational stories and use these in a CoP.
