Multimedia authoring is the process of assembling various types of media content such as audio, video, text, images, and animation into a multimedia presentation using tools. Multimedia Authoring Tool is a useful tool that helps authors to create multimedia presentations. Multimedia presentations are very widely used in various fields, such as broadcast digital information delivery, digital visual communication in smart cars, and others. The Multimedia Authoring tool attributes are the factors that determine the quality of a multimedia authoring tool. A multimedia authoring tool needs to have several attributes so that these tools can be used properly. The purpose of this literature review study is to find the advantages of the multimedia authoring tool attribute in each of the existing studies to produce knowledge on how to create a good quality multimedia authoring tool. These attributes are Editing, Services, Performance, and the Formal Verification Model. Editing attribute is an attribute for interfacing with the author. Followed by Service attribute and performance attribute to check and achieve proper multimedia documents. Since 1998, a multimedia modeling tool has been studied, and up to now, there have been many studies that have focused on one or more of these attributes. This article discusses the existing studies to examine the attributes generated from the studies. Multimedia authoring attributes are very important to study because they are the benchmarks of the software requirement specifications of Multimedia Authoring tools. The use of the Petri net model, the Hoare Logic, and the Simple Interactive Multimedia Model as a formal verification model can improve the performance of the Multimedia Authoring Tool. In the questionnaire that was submitted to the users, it was assessed positively by the users with the improvements in the Multimedia Authoring Tool.

Throughout the 1990s, educators working in alternative schools explored the use of individual learning plans as support for at risk students and reluctant, returning adult learners (Crichton, 2005; Crichton & Kinsel, 2002). These early learning plans were strictly paper based. Each student had her/his own cardboard folder that contained goal personal statements, benchmarks, course process, and personal information (e.g., interests, preferred learning styles). Samples of completed work were included in the folders so students could see their improvement/progress. By 1998, there was interest in exploring the potential of technology to improve the paper portfolios, noting improvements in multimedia authoring and Internet access. It was found that electronic learning plans, complete with collaborative journals, showed promise (Kinsel, 2004). This chapter suggests that ePortfolios that draw on content from personal eJournals extend those early learning plans both in concept and impact on learning.

This study sought to identify the perceptions of faculty in utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint as an authoring tool. This research posited that Microsoft PowerPoint has some multimedia authoring features and can possibly be used as a single-point multimedia authoring tool for faculty to utilize to create multimedia content for courses that they teach. However, PowerPoint is traditionally used as a presentation software, and despite its multimedia authoring capabilities, faculty may not be aware or even willing to use such features, having grown accustomed to their traditional use of the software. Nonetheless, from this study, it confirms that faculty are biased to seeing PowerPoint as a presentation tool. However, the study revealed that despite the initial myopia and limitations, post-intervention, participants showed a keen interest in using PowerPoint beyond the realm of presentations.

More video streaming technologies supporting distance learning systems are becoming popular among distributed network environments. In this paper, the authors develop a multimedia authoring tool for adaptive e-learning by using characterization of extended media streaming technologies. The distributed approach is based on an ontology-based model. Suppose a well-known teacher is giving a lecture/presentation to his student. Because of time constraints and other commitments, many students cannot attend. The main goal of the authors’ system is to provide a feasible method to record and represent a lecture/presentation using a browser with the windows media services. This system requires flexible support for the modeling of multimedia content models and supports possible interactivity, transfer of streams multimedia data such as audio, video, text, and annotations using network facilities. The authors propose a new approach for the modeling of reusable and adaptable multimedia content. A comprehensive system for advanced multimedia content production is also developed. This approach significantly impacts and supports the multimedia presentation authoring processes in terms of methodology and commercial aspects.
