This chapter discusses the notion of action-minimizing orbits. In particular, it defines the other two families of invariant sets, the so-called Aubry and Mañé sets. It explains their main dynamical and symplectic properties, comparing them with the results obtained in the preceding chapter for the Mather sets. The relation between these new invariant sets and the Mather sets is described. As a by-product, the chapter introduces the Mañé's potential, Peierls' barrier, and Mañé's critical value. It discusses their properties thoroughly. In particular, it highlights how this critical value is related to the minimal average action and describes these new concepts in the case of the simple pendulum.

AbstractRecent work has shown that every 3D root system allows the construction of a corresponding 4D root system via an ‘induction theorem’. In this paper, we look at the icosahedral case of $$H_3\rightarrow H_4$$ H 3 → H 4 in detail and perform the calculations explicitly. Clifford algebra is used to perform group theoretic calculations based on the versor theorem and the Cartan–Dieudonné theorem, giving a simple construction of the $${\mathrm {Pin}}$$ Pin and $${\mathrm {Spin}}$$ Spin covers. Using this connection with $$H_3$$ H 3 via the induction theorem sheds light on geometric aspects of the $$H_4$$ H 4 root system (the 600-cell) as well as other related polytopes and their symmetries, such as the famous Grand Antiprism and the snub 24-cell. The uniform construction of root systems from 3D and the uniform procedure of splitting root systems with respect to subrootsystems into separate invariant sets allows further systematic insight into the underlying geometry. All calculations are performed in the even subalgebra of $${\mathrm {Cl}}(3)$$ Cl ( 3 ) , including the construction of the Coxeter plane, which is used for visualising the complementary pairs of invariant polytopes, and are shared as supplementary computational work sheets. This approach therefore constitutes a more systematic and general way of performing calculations concerning groups, in particular reflection groups and root systems, in a Clifford algebraic framework.

AbstractThis paper deals with the Constrained Regulation Problem (CRP) for linear continuous-times fractional-order systems. The aim is to find the existence conditions of linear feedback control law for CRP of fractional-order systems and to provide numerical solving method by means of positively invariant sets. Under two different types of the initial state constraints, the algebraic condition guaranteeing the existence of linear feedback control law for CRP is obtained. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the polyhedral set to be a positive invariant set of linear fractional-order systems are presented, an optimization model and corresponding algorithm for solving linear state feedback control law are proposed based on the positive invariance of polyhedral sets. The proposed model and algorithm transform the fractional-order CRP problem into a linear programming problem which can readily solved from the computational point of view. Numerical examples illustrate the proposed results and show the effectiveness of our approach.

This paper is devoted to exploring personalized applications of cellular immunotherapy as a control strategy for the treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia described by a dynamical system of three first-order ordinary differential equations. The latter was achieved by applying both the Localization of Compact Invariant Sets and Lyapunov’s stability theory. Combination of these two approaches allows us to establish sufficient conditions on the immunotherapy treatment parameter to ensure the complete eradication of the leukemia cancer cells. These conditions are given in terms of the system parameters and by performing several in silico experimentations, we formulated a protocol for the therapy application that completely eradicates the leukemia cancer cells population for different initial tumour concentrations. The formulated protocol does not dangerously increase the effector T cells population. Further, complete eradication is considered when solutions go below a finite critical value below which cancer cells cannot longer persist; i.e., one cancer cell. Numerical simulations are consistent with our analytical results.

Abstract In the present paper, a class of fourth-order nonlinear difference equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions or periodic boundary conditions are considered. Based on the invariant sets of descending flow in combination with the mountain pass lemma, we establish a series of sufficient conditions on the existence of multiple solutions for these boundary value problems. In addition, some examples are provided to demonstrate the applicability of our results.
