The performance and detailed flow physics of a highly loaded, transonic, low-pressure turbine stage has been investigated numerically and experimentally. The mean rotor Zweifel coefficient was 1.35, with dh/U2 = 2.8, and a total pressure ratio of 1.75. The aerodynamic design was based on recent developments in boundary layer transition modeling. Steady and unsteady numerical solutions were used to design the blade geometry as well as to predict the design and off-design performance. Measurements were acquired in a recently developed, high-speed, rotating turbine facility. The nozzle-vane only and full stage characteristics were measured with varied mass flow, Reynolds number, and free-stream turbulence. The efficiency calculated from torque at the design speed and pressure ratio of the turbine was found to be 90.6%. This compared favorably to the mean line target value of 90.5%. This paper will describe the measurements and numerical solutions in detail for both design and off-design conditions.

Abstract This paper presents a CFD-based numerical analysis on the potential benefits of non-radial blading turbine for low speed-low pressure applications. Electric turbocompounding is a waste heat recovery technology consisting of a turbine coupled to a generator that transforms the energy left over in the engine exhaust gases, which is typically found at low pressure, into electricity. Turbines designed to operate at low specific speed are ideal for these applications since the peak efficiency occurs at lower pressure ratios than conventional high speed turbines. The baseline design consisted of a vaneless radial fibre turbine, operating at 1.2 pressure ratio and 28,000rpm. Experimental low temperature tests were carried out with the baseline radial blading turbine at nominal, lower and higher pressure ratio operating conditions to validate numerical simulations. The baseline turbine incidence angle effect was studied and positive inlet blade angle impact was assessed in the current paper. Four different turbine rotor designs of 20, 30, 40 and 50° of positive inlet blade angle are presented, with the aim to reduce the losses associated to positive incidence, specially at midspan. The volute domain was included in all CFD calculations to take into account the volute-rotor interactions. The results obtained from numerical simulations of the modified designs were compared with those from the baseline turbine rotor at design and off-design conditions. Total-to-static efficiency improved in all the non-radial blading designs at all operating points considered, by maximum of 1.5% at design conditions and 5% at off-design conditions, particularly at low pressure ratio. As non-radial fibre blading may be susceptible to high centrifugal and thermal stresses, a structural analysis was performed to assess the feasibility of each design. Most of non-radial blading designs showed acceptable levels of stress and deformation.

A pressure-exchange ejector transferring energy by compression and expansion waves has the potential for higher efficiency. The width and position of each port are essential in pressure-exchange ejector design. A dimensionless time τ expressing both port widths and the positions of port ends was introduced. A prototype was designed and the experimental system was set up. Many sets of experiment with different geometrical arrangements were conducted. The results suggest that the efficiency greatly changes with the geometrical arrangements. The efficiency is about 60% at proper port widths and positions, while at improper geometrical arrangements, the efficiency is much lower and the maximum deviation may reach about 20%. The proper dimensionless port widths and positions at different operating conditions are obtained. For a fixed overall pressure ratio, the widths of the high pressure flow inlet and middle pressure flow outlet increase as the outlet pressure increases and the low pressure flow inlet width is reduced with a larger outlet pressure. The middle pressure flow outlet (MO) opening end remains constant at different outlet pressures. The positions of the high pressure flow inlet (HI) closed end and the low pressure flow inlet (LI) open end increase with the elevation of outlet pressure, however, the distance between the HI closing end and the LI opening end is constant. The port widths and positions have a significant influence on the performance of the pressure-exchange ejector. The dimensionless data obtained are very valuable for pressure-exchange ejector design and performance optimization.

Multistage axial compressor has an advantage of lower stage loading as compared to a single stage. Several stages with low pressure ratio are linked together which allows for multiplication of pressure to generate high pressure ratio in an axial compressor. Since each stage has low pressure ratio they operate at a higher efficiency and the efficiency of multi-stage axial compressor as a whole is very high. Although, single stage centrifugal compressor has higher pressure ratio compared with an axial compressor but multistage centrifugal compressors are not as efficient because the flow has to be turned from radial at outlet to axial at inlet for each stage. The present study explores the advantages of extending the axial compressor efficient flow path that consist of rotor stator stages to the centrifugal compressor stage. In this invention, two rotating rows of blades are mounted on the same impeller disk, separated by a stator blade row attached to the casing. A certain amount of turning can be achieved through a single stage centrifugal compressor before flow starts separating, thus dividing it into multiple stages would be advantageous as it would allow for more flow turning. Also the individual stage now operate with low pressure ratio and high efficiency resulting into an overall increase in pressure ratio and efficiency. The baseline is derived from the NASA low speed centrifugal compressor design which is a 55 degree backward swept impeller. Flow characteristics of the novel multistage design are compared with a single stage centrifugal compressor. The flow path of the baseline and multi-stage compressor are created using 3DBGB tool and DAKOTA is used to optimize the performance of baseline as well novel design. The optimization techniques used are Genetic algorithm followed by Numerical Gradient method. The optimization resulted into improvements in incidence and geometry which significantly improved the performance over baseline compressor design. The multistage compressor is more efficient with a higher pressure ratio compared with the base line design for the same work input and initial conditions.

In 1999, ITP (Industria de Turbopropulsores, S.A.) launched a wide on-going research program focusing on new technologies to provide significant improvements in Low Pressure Turbines cost and weight. As consequence of the new technologies the experience limits are exceeded and new unknown concepts, like high stage loading turbines, must be explored and then a wide experimental work is required for validation purposes. Cold flow single stage rigs in high-speed facilities were selected by ITP as main vehicle to carry out the experimental validation. Single stage Low Pressure Turbine rigs have low-pressure ratio and power consumption, therefore efficiency predictions based on temperature drop require high accuracy thermocouple measurement systems (precision uncertainties lower than ±50 mK), if small efficiency variations must be captured. In this paper, a detailed uncertainty analysis is introduced and a temperature measurement system that allows achieving such high measurement accuracy is evaluated and described. Type T thermocouples are proposed for use in the range 0°C to 80°C, which are individually calibrated. The procedure followed for this calibration is presented and how is possible to achieve a precision of 30 mK. It is also shown as conventional UTR based on metal plates can behave as good as thermal baths in terms of temperature uniformity and errors, with the adequate isolation and temperature reference calibration. The conventional data recording and voltage measurement systems are experimentally evaluated, and they are found as main source of temperature errors. Although following some recommendations the precision of those systems can be improved, it is experimentally probed and therefore suggested the use of high accuracy voltmeter with a commutation unit to reduce significantly the temperature uncertainty. Finally a miniature Kiel Shroud is proposed and aerodynamically characterised in a high-speed facility. Mach, Reynolds number, yaw, blockage and manufacturing tolerance impact on recovery factor can be inferred from those results.

Abstract To reduce fuel-burn and CO2 emissions from aero gas turbines there is a drive towards very-high bypass ratio and smaller ultra-high-pressure ratio core engine technologies. However, this makes the design of the ducts connecting various compressor spools more challenging as the higher required radius change increases their aerodynamic loading. This is exacerbated for the duct which feeds the engine core as it must accept the relatively low-quality flow produced by the fan root. This is characterised by a hub-low pressure profile and large secondary flow structures which will inevitably increase loss and the likelihood of flow separation. Additionally, the desire for shorter, lighter nacelles means that the engine intake may be unable provide a uniform inlet flow to the fan when the aircraft is at an angle of attack or subject to cross winds. Any inlet distortion this generates can also further degrade the quality of the flow entering the core of the engine. This paper uses a combination of experiments and CFD to examine the effects of the inlet flow on the aerodynamics of an engine section splitter and transition duct designed to feed the low-pressure spool of a high bypass ratio turbofan. A fully annular test facility incorporating a 1½ stage axial compressor was used to compare the system performance of a rotor that produced a nominally flat profile with one that had a notably hub deficient flow. A RANS CFD model, employing a mixing plane between the rotor and Engine Section Stator (ESS) and a Reynolds Stress turbulence model, was then validated and used to further investigate the effects of increased inlet boundary layer thickness and bulk swirl distortion at rotor inlet. Overall, changes to the inlet condition were seen to have a surprisingly small effect on the flow at duct exit — i.e. the flow presented to the downstream compressor. Changes to the inlet did, however, generate increased secondary flows and degrade the performance of the ESS. This resulted in notably increased total pressure loss; in excess of 12% for the hub-low inlet and in excess of 30% at high inlet swirl where the flow in the ESS separated. However, the increased ESS wake structures, and the enhanced mixing, delayed separation in the duct suggesting that, overall the design was reasonably robust, albeit with a significant penalty in system loss.

The purpose of the ejector device is to capture the gas leakage from a dry-gas seal at low pressure, and re-inject it into the fuel gas line to the gas generator (without the use of compressors or rotating elements), hence providing a means to utilize the gas that would otherwise be vented to atmosphere. Implementation of this device will also have the benefit of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. The primary challenge to achieve the above goal lies in the fact that the leakage gas pressure is in the range of 70–340 kPag, while the minimum pressure required upstream of the fuel gas regulator is in the range of 2400–3300 kPag. The device consists of a two-stage supersonic ejector. The first stage is highly supersonic (nozzle exit Mach number ≃ 2.54), while the second stage is moderately supersonic (nozzle exit Mach number ≃ 1.72). Several tests where conducted on various configurations of the two stages on natural gas in order to arrive at the optimum design and operating parameters. The optimum design gave an expansion pressure ratio (motive/suction) of the order of 14.0 and compression pressure ratio (discharge/suction) of around 8.1. These ratios would meet the requirement of the minimum suction and discharge pressure mentioned above. This paper presents the optimum configuration arrived at after several iterations of different geometries of the supersonic nozzles, particularly for the first stage ejector, and presents the performance test results of the integrated system. The results indicate that the device would meet the requirements of capturing the low pressure, low flow dry gas seal leakage and re-inject it into the fuel gas stream with an overall ejector efficiency (based on thermodynamic availability) of 80%.

Low pressure compressor operation has some features. Firstly, the LPC stages work with cold air. For this reason there is transonic or subsonic flow in LPC. Secondly, the flow in LPC has complex spatial structure. Blade geometry of LPC is described by a large number of parameters. For this reason, it is difficult to pick up optimal combination of parameters manually. The solution of this problem is the usage of optimization methods to find the optimal combination of parameters. This approach was tested in this work. The main goal of this work was the LPC modernization for new parameters of gas turbine engine. Set of unimprovable solutions (Pareto set) was obtained as a result of solving optimization task. Pareto set was a compromise between the efficiency increase and the mass flow decrease. Each point from Pareto set had a correspondence with LPC unique geometry represented as an array of optimization parameters. One point of the Pareto set met all the required parameters of modernized LPC. The LPC geometry that guaranteed the efficiency increase by 1,3%, the total pressure ratio increase by 4% and mass flow rate decrease by 11% in comparison with the original LPC was obtained as a result of the investigation.
