ABSTRACT The concepts of billable hours and tracking time are a reality in public accounting. The purpose of this case is to educate students on the concept of billable hours and to improve the student's Excel skills through the development of a spreadsheet to track their time. Students were required to create the time-tracking Excel spread-sheet and to track all (personal and school-related) of their time for two weeks. Students were given pre/post tests and surveys and the results reflect that students significantly increased their performance in intermediate and advanced Excel skills, billable hours concepts and realize the difficulty in tracking time. Even though the students acknowledged the difficulty in tracking time, they did enjoy learning more about billable hours that they may encounter in their future professions.

Background: Mothers experience significant barriers to breastfeed in public spaces, which could result in a detrimental impact on the World Health Organization’s recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding. Failure to support and accept breastfeeding in public spaces could lead to mixed feeding or even abandonment of breastfeeding. Objective: The current study aimed to identify the knowledge of breastfeeding benefits and perceptions about it among mothers and community members in Alexandra, Gauteng Province, South Africa. Methods: A quantitative, non-experimental descriptive study was deployed using two structured questionnaires, which were distributed among mothers (n=96) and community members (n=96). All 192 questionnaires were completed and returned, although two questionnaires of mothers could not be used due to incompleteness. An excel spread sheet and Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 25 was used to analyze the data. Results: The findings of the current study revealed a positive correlation between the knowledge level about breastfeeding benefits [infants (r=0.45, p≤0.000) and mothers (r=0.29, p≤0.000)] and perceptions in public spaces. Community members and mothers who were knowledgeable regarding breastfeeding benefits exhibited supportive attitudes towards breastfeeding in public spaces. Conclusion: Altogether, the majority of mothers (69%) were comfortable to breastfeed in public spaces, and community members (84%) were supportive. Limited knowledge of breastfeeding benefits was associated with unsupportive attitudes towards breastfeeding in public spaces. Health messages that target these factors are essential to encourage support and acceptance of breastfeeding in public spaces. This could be executed through public education via posters in public spaces and during community health outreaches.

Abstract When the gate of a high-head conduit is partly opened, a negative pressure draws the air in through the air vent. Air that is entrained into the water is instantly forced downstream in the form of air bubbles. When the studies on high-head gated conduits were examined, it was determined that the air demand ratio varied depending on many hydraulic and geometric parameters. This work focused on determining the effect of conduit cross-section geometry on the air-demand ratio. A series of experiments were carried out on high-head radial gated conduits having different cross-section geometries. Experimental results showed that conduit cross-section geometry was an important effect on the air demand ratio especially in small gate opening rates. Further, design equations for the air demand ratio were presented relating the air demand ratio to Froude number, gate opening rate, and ratio of gate opening to conduit length.

Abstract Attrition and paroxysm of highly inflammable petroleum products in storage tanks, pipelines and/or haulage trucks is increasingly becoming a scourging socio-environmental quandary with a detrimental effect on the Nigerian economy. Non availability of a holistic response time analytic master plan is a major enigma while industrial disaster managers perhaps are the major culprits since they are mostly not time cognizant for spry and pragmatic delivery of service. The aim of this exposition is to ruminatively carry out cerebral chronological corollary perusal for blitzing fire paroxysms and pipeline attrition in Nigeria on Microsoft excel spread sheet. Comprehensive data validation was done for all models by substituting all solutions of matrix into the predicted time response model. Results of predicted time response model in minutes for case A gave; 101x1 + 79x2 + 59x3 + 45x4 + 24x5 = 358. The predicted time response model for case B gave 78x1 + 56x2 + 43x3 + 30x4 + 13x5 = 260. The predicted time response model for case C gave; 74x1 + 56x2 + 42x3 + 29x4 + 10x5 = 252. Results of these models shows that the average cumulative response time dropped from 3.58 minutes to 2.52 minutes from case A to case C while the coefficients all reduced in their values from model A to C. Improving the source of data gathering and computational processes is recommended for enhancement of this study.

Abstract Technology insertion into an existing system or subsystem requires careful planning and evaluation. Because the technology is new, there is often limited information upon which to base decisions. Further, decisions about technology insertion are typically made in the very early stages of a project when detailed information is sparse. Under these circumstances, the available information is typically linguistic, and fuzzy methods can be used to significant advantage in this environment. The implementation discussed in this paper employs an Excel spread sheet for user interface, and it employs COTS (Commercial Off the Shelf Technology) software for an inference engine. Heuristic based models are developed to evaluate risk in technology insertion. Risk elements include: budget risk, schedule risk, and performance risk. Results with an example problem are described to illustrate the fuzzy logic method, and conclusions are drawn regarding the advantages of this technique.

Prince Kola Beverages Limited (PKBL) is an introduction-level decision modelling case that aims to help develop what-if analysis and spreadsheet modelling skills. It has already been taught in three cohorts of my executive course customized for Coca Cola Beverages Pakistan (CCBPL) Limited middle managers, ‘Data Savvy Decision-Making’, and was warmly received. It is also suitable for both MBA and undergraduate business students. The problem involves using elementary forecasting, scenario analysis and sensitivity analysis without the complexity of statistics. This was also part of a 4-hour session in executive courses that included in-lab trainings on Microsoft Excel what-if analysis tools. For 80–90-minute sessions, students must have already been equipped with these tools. Additionally, it would be better to have the spreadsheets of students submitted by an online learning management system in advance of the class so that their models can be displayed in class and debated.

Spreadsheet programs, such as Microsoft Excel, Informix WINGZ, and Lotus 123, provide a framework for very fast and easy development of simple engineering models. The present paper describes a model of the continuous casting process that has been developed using a spreadsheet program, Microsoft Excel, running on a Macintosh II personal computer. The model consists of two-dimensional (2-D) steady-state finite-difference heat conduction calculations within a continuous casting mold coupled to a one-dimensional (1-D) transient solidification heat transfer model of the solidifying shell. The model structure and equations are described and the model predictions are compared with previous solutions. Practical examples using the model are discussed and sample results are provided. Spreadsheet programs running on personal computers are capable of relatively complex calculations that would require extensive effort using conventional programming languages.

Purpose – Open Access Theses and Dissertations (OATD) distinguishes itself from other ETD databases by providing immediate access to theses that are freely available online. The Republic of Armenia is a small geographical area in Central Asia with a population of only three million, yet an estimated total of five to seven million people of Armenian ancestry live outside of Armenia. What knowledge of Armenian cultural heritage can be discovered by searching OATD for open access theses that relate to Armenian history and culture?. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The OATD database was searched for the terms Armenia or Armenian. Discovered thesis records were exported into citation management tools and analysed for subject content, year of publication, institutional repository source, and a determination of whether Armenia was a primary or secondary topic. Access to theses was also tested to verify their open access. The remaining thesis records (n=152) were exported into an Excel spread sheet for numerical analysis and graphic production. Findings – From the records getting enhanced metadata (n=152), slightly more (52 per cent) were master's theses. Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) used the Republic and culture of Armenia as a primary theme. English was the predominant author language (85 per cent) with Portuguese and French represented less than 5 per cent. World history and social sciences research were the most represented subjects. Most open access theses on Armenia or Armenian culture date from after 2000. All enhanced records, along with their abstracts and direct links, are available in a searchable RefWorks shared folder. Originality/value – The OATD database was evaluated for scholarly representation of a particular country and culture.
