With an estimated global value of US$15.6 billion, farmed salmonids represent a precious food resource, which is also the fastest increasing food producing industry with annual growth of 7% in production. A total average of 3,594,000 metric tonnes was produced in 2020, behind Chinese and Indian carps, tilapias and catfishes. Lead producers of farmed salmonids are Norway, Chile, Faroe, Canada and Scotland, stimulated by increasing global demand and market. However, over the last 2 years, production has been declining, occasioned by effects of diseases as well as rising feed costs. Over the last year, production has declined sharply due to effects of covid-19. This chapter reviews the species in culture, systems of culture, environmental footprints of salmon culture, and market trends in salmon culture. Burden of diseases, especially Infectious pancreatic Necrosis, Infectious salmon anemia and furunculosis, as well as high cost of feed formulation, key challenges curtailing growth of the salmon production industry, are discussed. A review is made of the international salmon genome sequencing effort, selective breeding for disease resistance, and the use of genomics to mitigate challenges of diseases that stifle higher production of salmonids globally.

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale), a crop projecting Ghana internationally beside cocoa, is usually cultivated for its nut, for both local and international markets. The cashew apple is underutilized in many African countries. This study is aimed at determining the knowledge, perception, and utilization of cashew apples in Ghana among stakeholders in the cashew value chain. Results from the study showed that the cashew industry consisted of farmers (89.1%), nut buyers (6.8%), extension officers (3.5%), and processors (0.6%) with uneven distribution of males (66.2%) and females (33.8%). Cashew apple utilization was low (<10%), though 84.37% had in-depth knowledge on the health benefits and value-added products made from the apples. Cashew apple is mainly utilized as fresh fruits or juice, with minor uses as an ingredient in food preparation, animal feed formulation, and production of mushroom, weedicide, ethanol, and manure. The cashew apple processors identified high cost of processing equipment, perishability of apples, lack of capital, market, technical know-how, and government support as challenges. Based on these findings, education of the stakeholders on value addition or processing of the apples at household and industrial levels and provision of stimulus packages to private processors are recommended to maximize cashew apple utilization in Ghana.

Abstract For the proper growth of fish, it is necessary to feed the fish with a proper and balanced diet. A study was conducted to find out the effect of different protein-based diets on fingerlings of Tor putitora (mahseer). A feed with dietary protein levels of 35%, 40%, 45%, and 50% were prepared. The effect of different protein-based feed on weight gain, standard growth rate (SGR), food conversion ratio (FCR), percent weight gain, food conversion efficiency (FCE), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) was studied. An increase was observed in the growth rate with an increase in protein concentration up to 45%. The fingerlings fed a 45% protein diet shown the highest growth, followed by 50%, 40%, and 35%. The SGR value was greatest for 45% protein diet (8.56) followed by 50% and 40%, while the least values were observed for 35% protein feed (1.57). The same trend was observed for FCE. The highest PER values was observed in fishes fed 45% protein-based feed (0.65) followed by 50% (0.56), 40% (0.38) and35% (0.17). The food conversion ratio was lowest for 45% protein diet (3.41), while the greatest for 35% protein feed (16.85). It was concluded that a 45% protein-based diet was the best feed formulation for higher production of Tor putitora. However, research on the same percentage of protein diet is recommended for yearlings.

The aim of this study was to determine the standardized ileal digestibility coefficients (SIDCs) of nitrogen (N) and amino acids (AAs) in corn and barley at six different ages (days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42) of broilers using the direct method. The apparent AA digestibility coefficients were corrected using age-appropriate basal endogenous AA losses. No age effect (p > 0.05) was noted for the SIDC of N in corn. The average SIDC of indispensable AAs (IAAs) and total AAs (TAAs) was influenced in a quadratic manner (p < 0.05) with the values being higher at day 7 that decreased at day 14, increased and plateaued between days 21 and 35 and dropped again at day 42. The average SIDC of dispensable AAs (DAAs) was influenced linearly (p < 0.05). In barley, the SIDC of N and average IAAs, DAAs and TAAs was affected (quadratic; p < 0.001) by age. The digestibility increased from day 7 to 21 and then plateaued up to day 42. The present findings confirm that the SIDC of AA in corn and barley are influenced by broiler age and that the age effect on AA digestibility may need to be considered for precise feed formulation.

AlaSerCys Transporter 2 (ASCT2), encoded by the SLC1A5 gene, plays an important role in the absorption of glutamine. In this study, the full-length cDNA sequence of ASCT2 was cloned from triploid crucian carp. It encodes 539 amino acid residues and a stop codon. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the sequences of the ASCT2 ORF region in cyprinid fishes shared high sequence homology. Comparing the abundance of ASCT2 in different tissues, we found its expression level in muscle was significantly higher than that in intestine (p < 0.05). In addition, the expression levels of ASCT2 also appeared different in diurnal variation. Then we found the addition of 2.5% glutamate in a feeding diet significantly increased the expression levels of ASCT2 in intestine and muscle (p < 0.05). However, in glutamine experiments, the muscle showed the highest expression level of ASCT2 when fish were fed the diet containing 3.0% glutamine (p < 0.05). In vitro, ASCT2 was sensitive to glutamine and its expression level appeared down-regulated when the addition of glutamine was added to 0.1 mg/mL. Finally, we found that the diet with 29% protein level significantly increased the expression level of ASCT2 in intestine (p < 0.05). Nevertheless, different protein sources (fish meal and soybean meal) had no significant effect on the expression levels of ASCT2 in intestine and muscle (p > 0.05). These results provided data for the study of ASCT2 in triploid crucian carp regulated by feeding nutrition, which had a potential application in improving feed formulation in aquaculture.

Aquafeed accounts for at least 75–90% of aquaculture’s operating costs. Traditional aquafeed ingredients such as fishmeal, fish oil, and soybean meal are unsustainable; further, their increasing cost necessities developing alternative feed ingredients. Microalgae-based aquafeed is not only environmentally friendly, but it can also be cost-effective with proper optimization. In addition, the nutrition profile of microalgae is similar to that of many fishes. The digestibility of a feed is one of the most important factors to consider in feed formulation. A highly digestible feed can lower production costs, reduce feed waste, and reduce the risk of eutrophication. This review discusses the digestibility of various nutrients such as protein, lipid, carbohydrate, amino acids, and fatty acids (including omega-3 fatty acids), dry matter, and energy of various microalgae in fish. Other commonly used aquafeed ingredients were also compared to microalgae in terms of nutrient and energy digestibility in fish. The intrinsic characteristics of microalgae, biomass pretreatment, and feed preparation methods are all discussed as factors that contribute to the nutrient and energy digestibility of microalgae in fish. Furthermore, methods for increasing the digestibility of microalgal biomass in fish are suggested. Finally, the review concludes with the challenges and prospects of using microalgae as a fish feed in terms of digestibility.

AbstractCuprizone is a copper-chelating agent that induces pathology similar to that within some multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions. The reliability and reproducibility of cuprizone for inducing demyelinating disease pathology depends on the animals ingesting consistent doses of cuprizone. Cuprizone-containing pelleted feed is a convenient way of delivering cuprizone, but the efficacy of these pellets at inducing demyelination has been questioned. This study compared the degree of demyelinating disease pathology between mice fed cuprizone delivered in pellets to mice fed a powdered cuprizone formulation at an early 3 week demyelinating timepoint. Within rostral corpus callosum, cuprizone pellets were more effective than cuprizone powder at increasing astrogliosis, microglial activation, DNA damage, and decreasing the density of mature oligodendrocytes. However, cuprizone powder demonstrated greater protein nitration relative to controls. Furthermore, mice fed control powder had significantly fewer mature oligodendrocytes than those fed control pellets. In caudal corpus callosum, cuprizone pellets performed better than cuprizone powder relative to controls at increasing astrogliosis, microglial activation, protein nitration, DNA damage, tissue swelling, and reducing the density of mature oligodendrocytes. Importantly, only cuprizone pellets induced detectable demyelination compared to controls. The two feeds had similar effects on oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPC) dynamics. Taken together, these data suggest that demyelinating disease pathology is modelled more effectively with cuprizone pellets than powder at 3 weeks. Combined with the added convenience, cuprizone pellets are a suitable choice for inducing early demyelinating disease pathology.

The nutritional content that is balanced and in accordance with the needs of fish will be utilized by fish as a source of energy used for growth. The used of feed alternative from coconut testa bioconversion has been investigated for its effect on the growth performance of red tilapia stadium fingerling. The chemical composition of coconut testa, survival rate and water quality (temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen) were analysed descriptively. The experiment was carried out experimentally using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), which consisted of four levels of using coconut testa bioconversion by Rhizopus oryzae in feed (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%). The performance parameters measured consisted of Average daily gain, feed efficiency, and protein efficiency ratio. Data were analyzed using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with a 95% confidence level, and Duncan's multiple distance test. The chemichal change, survival rate. The study showed that the bioconversion of R. oryzae coconut testa up to 20% in the feed formulation could provide the performance of red tilapia fry, with the highest value obtained at the use of 15% with an average feed efficiency of 42.43 ± 0.71.

The manufacture of plant-based drinks has the drawback of a huge production of underexploited press cakes. In particular, the oat press cake is mainly used in feed formulation, whereas added-value applications in human nutrition are scarce. Considering that enzymatic treatments may be useful to improve the nutritional quality of these insoluble byproducts, this study aimed to evaluate whether the treatment with some food-grade enzymes, such as amylase, cellulase/xylanase, protease, and their combination, may be useful to achieve this goal. Proteomic and peptidomic studies showed that the enzymatic treatments improved the protein extraction yields and induced a release of low molecular weight (LMW) peptides that were demonstrated to provide a useful antioxidant activity. In the treated oat press cake proteins, the concentration of the bound phenolic compounds was decreased, with the exception of caffeic acid, which was increased, and avenanthramides, which remained unchanged. Finally, the enzymatic treatment decreased the concentration of phytic acid. All these results indicate that the enzymatic treatments may be useful to ameliorate the nutritional profile of these protein ingredients, before their inclusion in different food products.

Chitosan is not a common excipient for direct compression due to poor flowability and inadequate compressibility. Co-processing of chitosan and kaolin is a challenging method to overcome the limitations of the individual excipients. The purpose of the present study was to develop co-processed chitosan–kaolin by the spray drying technique (rotary atomizer spray dryer) and to characterize the excipient properties. The formation of chitosan nanoparticles was the major factor for desirable tablet hardness. The ratio of chitosan/tripolyphosphate of 10:1 and 20:1 had a significant effect on hardness. The successful development of co-processed chitosan–kaolin as a novel tablet excipient was obtained from a feed formulation composed of chitosan and kaolin at a ratio of 55:45 and the optimum chitosan/tripolyphosphate ratio of 20:1. Co-processing altered the physical properties of co-processed chitosan–kaolin in such a way that it enhanced the flowability and tableting performance compared to the physical mixture.
