AbstractPrevious and forthcoming chapters describe how to improve nutrition care with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. Developing and improving the skills and knowledge of the interdisciplinary team through interprofessional education are essential for embedding evidence-based, collaborative, nutritional care. This capacity building in turn supports delivery of effective nutritional care for older adults.

ABSTRACT Objective Aimed at analysing the symbolic dimension of prenatal nutritional care in diabetes. Methods Participants were 17 puerperal adults diagnosed with previous or gestational diabetes. Participant observation and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. The data were interpreted according to an adaptation of Bardin’s Thematic Content Analysis. Results The main meaning of diabetes was the need for changing eating habits. Nutritional care based on the Traditional Method or the Carbohydrate Counting Method was understood as an opportunity for dietary re-education. Weight loss was considered desirable by some participants, albeit against the advice of nutritionists. Pregnant women adopted the standard meal plan, rarely used the food substitution list, and reported occasional dietary transgressions, self-allowed in small portions. Foods containing sucrose were perceived as less harmful to health than added sugars. Conclusion Each pregnant woman experienced prenatal nutritional care in diabetes not as a dietary method, but as part of her lifestyle.

AbstractPrevious chapters have described how to implement and improve nutrition care with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. The focus of this chapter is on the link between malnutrition and pressure injuries (PIs), focussing on nutritional screening, assessment and interdisciplinary interventions in preventing and managing PIs.

Mastitis is an infection of the breast that generally occurs in conjunction with lactation which often occurs in nursing mothers. Blockage of the milk ducts and infection can cause mastitis. Mastitis will result in an increase in the nutritional needs of nursing mothers and disruption of the breastfeeding process so that it has an impact on the nutritional status of the baby. The purpose of writing is to provide a comprehensive description of nutritional care for mastitis mothers using the literature review method. From the study, it is known the importance of proper nutritional care for mothers with mastitis in the form of assessment, nutritional diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation as a continuous cycle to overcome mastitis problems in collaboration with the nutrition care team. The conclusion is that collaboration with other health professionals has started since the nutritional assessment was carried out, so that the management of mastitis cases can be more optimal.

Background: Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and was reported to cause 8.8 million deaths in 2015. It was long predicted that about 70% of the new cancer cases will be in low-income countries (LIC). In Tanzania, like in many LICs, the need for improved cancer care is critical because cancer rates are rising dramatically. Most cancers are detected late and hence high mortality and poor palliative care for patients. Tanzania lacks trained clinical nutritionists and dieticians to manage different conditions including cancer. Aim: The aim of this project is to build the capacity of nutritionists and other health personnel to provide nutrition care to cancer patients in hospitals. Methods: One nutritionist from Tanzania will be attached to the Kenyatta National Hospital in Kenya for one month to obtain practical experience on the nutritional management of cancer patients. The acquired knowledge will be disseminated among health care professionals in Tanzania, specifically, nutritionist and nurses in selected health care facilities. About six nutrition officers and six nurses who work in Ocean Road Cancer Institute, Bugando Hospital, KCMC hospital and Muhimbili National Hospital will be trained by the incumbent on nutrition care for cancer patients once the fellowship visit has been completed. In addition, a study to identify differences in nutritional care for cancer patients between Tanzania and Kenya will be conducted. Cancer patients visiting hospitals in Tanzania and Kenya will be asked to complete a questionnaire that will assess their nutritional care in detail. Responses from cancer patients from each country will be compared to identify differences. Results: Expected results from this project includes, the transfer of knowledge in nutritional management of cancer patients between Tanzania and Kenya, and the subsequent dissemination of this knowledge to other nutrition specialists based in the home country, Tanzania. Further results will include data obtained from a survey that will be performed on cancer patients from both countries regarding their nutritional care. This study is also expected to open up collaborative research opportunities between the universities and health facilities on best practices for nutrition care and support for cancer patients. Conclusion: This study will not only improve palliative care among cancer patients but will also create more awareness on preventive measures against cancers with emphasis on dietary habits.

Purpose: This study was conducted on nurses from The Sheba Medical Center. The purpose of the study was to investigate nurses’ evaluation of the importance of a nutrition assessment, (b) nurses’ knowledge of nutrition care and (c) nurses’ evaluation of the quality of nutrition care in their department. Design: The study was a quantitative correlational study performed in a university-affiliated, teaching hospital. Methods: Data were collected via a digital questionnaire through head nurses, from 203 nurses and analyzed by frequencies, means and Pearson correlations, independent t-tests, oneway ANOVA and stepwise such as the ability of patients to feed themselves, chew and swallow, multiple linear regression were performed to determine predictors observing whether a patient finishes a meal and offering assistance of nurses’ responses where needed. Findings: Importance of nutritional assessment is positively and significantly correlated to knowledge of nutritional care and quality of nutritional treatment. Female nurses’ knowledge is significantly higher than male. Senior nurses’ knowledge is higher than less senior nurses. Nurses who participated in emergency care training have a significantly higher level of knowledge than nurses who did not participate in this course. Knowledge of nutritional care is not significantly correlated to quality of nutritional treatment. It is important to introduce the role of nurses regarding nutritional care within their departments to doctors and dietitians, as well as involving them in building the intervention course. Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of checking the quality of nurses’ educational knowledge and improving it through an intervention with specified training surrounding knowledge regarding nutrition, including learning and training.

Hospital nutritional care requires a timely, accurate and complete information delivery to the patients. Some barriers found in the documentation process include incomplete documentation and errors in calculating patient’s nutritional needs. We developed NUCAPRO (NCP Electronic), a computer-based system, to document the nutritional care process and help dietitians in calculating a patient’s nutritional needs. This computer system was compared with a manual system to find out which of the two provided more accurate and complete documentation. This pre-experimental study used a pre–post-test design. Eight dietitians were recruited from the Internal Medicine Department Hospital in Malang to perform the documentation of the nutritional care of 40 diabetes mellitus patients. The documentation was performed using a manual system and NUCAPRO. The completeness and accuracy of documentation were compared between the two systems. Statistical analysis was done using McNemar. The results showed no difference in terms of completeness and accuracy of documentation between the two systems (p < 0.05). However, the error in calculation using NCP Electronic was found to be lower than the manual system. We suggest developing an alert feature for the system so that the process is more efficient.
