Mastitis is an infection of the breast that generally occurs in conjunction with lactation which often occurs in nursing mothers. Blockage of the milk ducts and infection can cause mastitis. Mastitis will result in an increase in the nutritional needs of nursing mothers and disruption of the breastfeeding process so that it has an impact on the nutritional status of the baby. The purpose of writing is to provide a comprehensive description of nutritional care for mastitis mothers using the literature review method. From the study, it is known the importance of proper nutritional care for mothers with mastitis in the form of assessment, nutritional diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation as a continuous cycle to overcome mastitis problems in collaboration with the nutrition care team. The conclusion is that collaboration with other health professionals has started since the nutritional assessment was carried out, so that the management of mastitis cases can be more optimal.

Abstract Background Nutrition is important for prostate cancer (PC) survivorship care to help achieve a healthy weight, reduce treatment side effects and reduce the risk of developing other chronic diseases. We aimed to advance the understanding of the nutritional needs of men with PC and services that could be potentially implemented to address them. Methods We conducted a needs assessment of nutrition services for men with PC drawing on four perspectives; 1) patient evaluation of a nutrition education session in British Columbia (BC), 2) survey of BC health professionals, 3) an environmental scan of existing nutrition services across Canada and 4) a scoping literature review. Results Patients expressed a need for more nutrition information and a desire for additional nutrition services. More than 60% of health professionals believed there is a need for more nutrition services for men with PC, and reported the focus should be on weight management or management of PC progression. The environmental scan revealed few existing services for men with PC across Canada, most were inclusive of multiple cancers and not tailored for men with PC. Eighteen completed studies were identified in the scoping literature review. The majority provided combined diet and exercise programs with various formats of delivery such as individual, group and home-based. Overall, 78% of studies reported improvements in one or more of the following measures: dietary intake/ diet quality, body composition, self-efficacy, quality of life, fatigue, practicing health behavior goals and physical function/ exercise. Four studies assessed feasibility, adherence or satisfaction with all reporting positive findings. Conclusion Despite the high prevalence of PC in Canada, and the perceived need for more support by patients and health professionals, there are limited nutrition services for men with PC. Evidence from the literature suggests nutrition services are effective and well-accepted by men with PC. Our findings define a need for standardized nutrition services for men with PC that assess and meet long term nutritional needs. Our findings also provide insight into the type and delivery of nutrition services that may help close the gap in care for men with PC.

The practice of restricting oral intake during labour has been and remains controversial. Overall, the nutritional needs of labouring women are poorly understood. This literature review reveals that little evidence exists to support the general restriction of oral intake for all labouring women. Education of health professionals and pregnant women regarding intake in labour is required to encourage collaboration in the development and institution of appropriate policies in keeping with the available evidence for best practice.

Purpose: This study was conducted on nurses from The Sheba Medical Center. The purpose of the study was to investigate nurses’ evaluation of the importance of a nutrition assessment, (b) nurses’ knowledge of nutrition care and (c) nurses’ evaluation of the quality of nutrition care in their department. Design: The study was a quantitative correlational study performed in a university-affiliated, teaching hospital. Methods: Data were collected via a digital questionnaire through head nurses, from 203 nurses and analyzed by frequencies, means and Pearson correlations, independent t-tests, oneway ANOVA and stepwise such as the ability of patients to feed themselves, chew and swallow, multiple linear regression were performed to determine predictors observing whether a patient finishes a meal and offering assistance of nurses’ responses where needed. Findings: Importance of nutritional assessment is positively and significantly correlated to knowledge of nutritional care and quality of nutritional treatment. Female nurses’ knowledge is significantly higher than male. Senior nurses’ knowledge is higher than less senior nurses. Nurses who participated in emergency care training have a significantly higher level of knowledge than nurses who did not participate in this course. Knowledge of nutritional care is not significantly correlated to quality of nutritional treatment. It is important to introduce the role of nurses regarding nutritional care within their departments to doctors and dietitians, as well as involving them in building the intervention course. Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of checking the quality of nurses’ educational knowledge and improving it through an intervention with specified training surrounding knowledge regarding nutrition, including learning and training.

Hospital nutritional care requires a timely, accurate and complete information delivery to the patients. Some barriers found in the documentation process include incomplete documentation and errors in calculating patient’s nutritional needs. We developed NUCAPRO (NCP Electronic), a computer-based system, to document the nutritional care process and help dietitians in calculating a patient’s nutritional needs. This computer system was compared with a manual system to find out which of the two provided more accurate and complete documentation. This pre-experimental study used a pre–post-test design. Eight dietitians were recruited from the Internal Medicine Department Hospital in Malang to perform the documentation of the nutritional care of 40 diabetes mellitus patients. The documentation was performed using a manual system and NUCAPRO. The completeness and accuracy of documentation were compared between the two systems. Statistical analysis was done using McNemar. The results showed no difference in terms of completeness and accuracy of documentation between the two systems (p < 0.05). However, the error in calculation using NCP Electronic was found to be lower than the manual system. We suggest developing an alert feature for the system so that the process is more efficient. Keywords: dietetics, documentation, medical informatic application, completeness, accurate, error

BACKGROUND: Older adults, both institutionalized and free-living are vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies and poor nutritional status, which affect morbidity and quality of life amongst them. Yet, little attention on nutritional needs is given to this vulnerable group in many developing countries, and very little data exist on the nutritional status of older Ghanaians. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed dietary intakes, anthropometric status, and anaemia prevalence among older adults in Effutu Municipality, Ghana. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, anthropometry, repeated 24-hour dietary recall, haemoglobin levels were determined among 150 older adults (60–87 years). The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) questionnaire was used to determine malnutrition prevalence among older adults. RESULTS: None of the older adults met estimated average requirement (EAR) and adequate intake (AI) for vitamin E and calcium respectively, and 72.0%, 71.3%, 99.3%, 98.7%,76.0% had insufficient intake for energy, protein, zinc, folate and vitamin C respectively. Also, 39.3% were anaemic using haemoglobin cut-offs, 12.0% were malnourished based on the MNA tool and 28.0% were underweight based on BMI index. Married older adults (OR = 0.1, p = 0.005, 95% CI = 0.1–0.5) had lower odds for anaemia than those who were divorced. Underweight participants had 11.7 increased odds of being anaemic (OR = 11.7, p = 0.048, 95% CI = 1.0–135.0) than overweight participants. Those who had adequate vitamin C (OR = 0.3, p = 0.018, 95% CI = 0.1–0.8) and folate (OR = 0.2, p = 0.396, 95% CI = 0.1–6.7) intakes had lower odds of being anaemic than those with inadequate vitamin C and folate intakes, while those who had adequate iron (OR = 1.4, p = 0.412, 95% CI = 0.6–3.2) and vitamin B12 (OR = 1.6, p = 0.473, 95% CI = 0.5–5.3) intakes were more likely to be anaemic CONCLUSIONS: Inadequate nutrient intakes, anaemia, underweight and malnutrition prevalence were found among these older adults. Anaemia was associated with being underweight, but not nutrients intake. The nutritional needs of older people should be addressed to reduce risks for disease.

Abstract This article aims to review systematically the evidence on nutritional assessment techniques and parameters used to determine the nutritional status of children and adolescents. The literature review and the selection of publications were performed using the Medline, Lilacs, SciELO, Embase, personal files. 17 studies were identified, 7 addressed the anthropometric indices as the main outcome, 7 analyzed the growth and development of children and adolescents through growth curves, and the remainder surveyed body composition. In general, all met the quality criteria, unless 6 of the articles who did not discuss the limitations. The literature review suggests several techniques and parameters that can be applied to determine the nutritional status of children and adolescents from different countries. Growth graphs are essential to assess the health of children, but depend greatly of the growth tables used. Although BMI can be practical, it does not distinguish body fat from lean mass. The best interpretation of anthropometry will depend of valid reference values for age range of the study population. BIA is a quick feasible method, but the measurement has some various nationalities.

The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus has sparked discussions among health professionals about the role of food and nutrition in the infectious condition caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus in different population groups. Malnutrition, including obesity, may reflect more severe outcomes in the physiopathology of infection and systemic responses caused by COVID-19. The present work aims to make considerations directed to the nutritionist about the susceptibility of COVID-19 in individuals submitted to malnutrition, highlighting possible outcomes of the disease and the importance of nutritional care in maintaining the health of these patients. Therefore, maintaining a good nutritional status of these patients, combined with an adequate level of micronutrients will not guarantee protection against infection caused by COVID-19, however, it is essential to minimize the risks of worsening this disease.
