Unconstrained Facial Images: Database for Face Recognition Under Real-World Conditions

Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is a linear approach for extracting localized feature of facial image. However, NMF may fail to process the data points that are nonlinearly separable. The kernel extension of NMF, named kernel NMF (KNMF), can model the nonlinear relationship among data points and extract nonlinear features of facial images. KNMF is an unsupervised method, thus it does not utilize the supervision information. Moreover, the extracted features by KNMF are not sparse enough. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a supervised KNMF called block kernel NMF (BKNMF). A novel objective function is established by incorporating the intra-class information. The algorithm is derived by making use of the block strategy and kernel theory. Our BKNMF has some merits for face recognition, such as highly sparse features and orthogonal features from different classes. We theoretically analyze the convergence of the proposed BKNMF. Compared with some state-of-the-art methods, our BKNMF achieves superior performance in face recognition.

Face recognition in real world applications is a very difficult task because of image misalignments, pose and illumination variations, or occlusions. Many researchers in this field have investigated both face representation and classification techniques able to deal with these drawbacks. However, none of them is free from limitations. Early proposed algorithms were generally holistic, in the sense they consider the face object as a whole. Recently, challenging benchmarks demonstrated that they are not adequate to be applied in unconstrained environments, despite of their good performances in more controlled conditions. Therefore, the researchers' attention is now turning on local features that have been demonstrated to be more robust to a large set of non-monotonic distortions. Nevertheless, though local operators partially overcome some drawbacks, they are still opening new questions (e.g., Which criteria should be used to select the most representative features?). This is the reason why, among all the others, hybrid approaches are showing a high potential in terms of recognition accuracy when applied in uncontrolled settings, as they integrate complementary information from both local and global features. This chapter explores local, global, and hybrid approaches.

Face matching is notoriously error-prone, and some work suggests additional difficulty when matching the faces of children. It is possible that individuals with natural proficiencies in adult face matching (“super-recognisers” [SRs]) will also excel at the matching of children’s faces, although other work implicates facilitations in typical perceivers who have high levels of contact with young children (e.g., nursery teachers). This study compared the performance of both of these groups on adult and child face matching to a group of low-contact controls. High- and low-contact control groups performed at a remarkably similar level in both tasks, whereas facilitations for adult and child face matching were observed in some (but not all) SRs. As a group, the SRs performed better in the adult compared with the child task, demonstrating an extended own-age bias compared with controls. These findings suggest that additional exposure to children’s faces does not assist the performance in a face matching task, and the mechanisms underpinning superior recognition of adult faces can also facilitate the child face recognition. Real-world security organisations should therefore seek individuals with general facilitations in face matching for both adult and child face matching tasks.

While there has been an enormous amount of research on face recognition under pose/illumination/expression changes and image degradations, problems caused by occlusions attracted relatively less attention. Facial occlusions, due, for example, to sunglasses, hat/cap, scarf, and beard, can significantly deteriorate performances of face recognition systems in uncontrolled environments such as video surveillance. The goal of this paper is to explore face recognition in the presence of partial occlusions, with emphasis on real-world scenarios (e.g., sunglasses and scarf). In this paper, we propose an efficient approach which consists of first analysing the presence of potential occlusion on a face and then conducting face recognition on the nonoccluded facial regions based on selective local Gabor binary patterns. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art works including KLD-LGBPHS, S-LNMF, OA-LBP, and RSC. Furthermore, performances of the proposed approach are evaluated under illumination and extreme facial expression changes provide also significant results.

Face is one among the foremost important human's biometrics which is used frequently in every day human communication and due to some of its unique characteristics plays a major role in conveying identity and emotion. So far numerous methods have been proposed for face recognition, but it's still remained very challenging in real world applications and up to date; there is no technique which equals human ability to recognize faces despite many variations in appearance that the face can have in a scene and provides a strong solution to all situations.
