Abstract Hoerl and McCormack demonstrate that although animals possess a sophisticated temporal updating system, there is no evidence that they also possess a temporal reasoning system. This important case study is directly related to the broader claim that although animals are manifestly capable of first-order (perceptually-based) relational reasoning, they lack the capacity for higher-order, role-based relational reasoning. We argue this distinction applies to all domains of cognition.

The challenges encountered in building the InternationalChildren’s Digital Library (ICDL), a freely availableonline library of children’s literature are described. Thesechallenges include selecting and processing books fromdifferent countries, handling and presenting multiplelanguages simultaneously, and addressing cultural differences. Unlike other digital libraries that present content from one or a few languages and cultures, and focuson either adult or child audiences, ICDL must serve amultilingual, multicultural, multigenerational audience.The research is presented as a case study for addressingthese design criteria; current solutions and plans forfuture work are described.

This research is entitled strategy of university library services in the new normal period case study of the technical implementation unit (UPT) of the University of Riau library. The purpose of this study was to determine the service strategy taken by the technical implementing unit (UPT) of the Riau University library in the new normal era. The method used in this research is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The processing method uses data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The informants in this study were the head of the library, the head of the service sector, and the head of the IT department. The results of this study are that there are several strategies taken by the Riau University library, that is the development of digital libraries that must be accelerated and add supporting applications to ensure the smooth distribution of information to users.

Agent system design is a complex task challenging designers to simulate intelligent collaborative behavior. Roles can reduce the complexity of agent system design by categorizing the roles played by agents. The role concepts can also be used in agent systems to describe the collaboration among cooperative agents. In this chapter, we introduce roles as a means to support interaction and collaboration among agents in multi-agent systems. We review the application of roles in current agent systems at first, then describe the fundamental principles of role-based collaboration and propose the basic methodologies of how to apply roles into agent systems (i.e., the revised E-CARGO model). After that, we demonstrate a case study: a soccer robot team designed with role specifications. Finally, we present the potentiality to apply roles into information personalization.

This chapter describes a research study with an objective to explore and describe decision factors related to technology adoption. The study utilized theories of diffusion of innovations and communities of practice as frameworks and a case study of Web services (WS) technology in the digital library (DL) environment to develop an understanding of the decision-making process. A qualitative case study approach was used to investigate the research problems and data was collected through semistructured interviews, documentary evidence (e.g., meeting minutes), and a comprehensive member check. Face-to-face and phone interviews were conducted with respondents from five different DL programs in the U.S., selected based on distinctive characteristics (e.g., size of the DL program). Findings of the research suggest that the decision-making process is a complex procedure in which a number of factors are considered when making WS adoption decisions. These factors are categorized as organizational, individual, and technology-specific factors.
