Zapin Lenga is a Malaysian folk dance within Zapin Melayu and specifically known as Zapin Johor. Zapin Lenga was originated in Muar, one of the district in Johor state and the oldest Zapin Melayu repertoire that had been found in Johor. Zapin Lenga which usually performed for religious significance comprises of six-step patterns, known as ‘langkah’ that were performed only by the males during the olden days. In the meaning of preservation, we have used Motion Capture (MoCap) technology in recording and digitising human motions. In this paper, we present a primary work in preserving the dance movements of Zapin Lenga through Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) including Body, Effort, Shape and Space in order to identify qualities on dance movements. The dance movements were analysed by considering musical rhythm using segmentation method and the distances between markers were measured to define speed.

The non-humanoid robots can express emotion by imitating the humans body language with different paths. The movement parameters effecting the Laban Effort Factors can be got by parameterizing the trajectory with using Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) Theory. Then, the emotion expressing model based on the trajectory of aerial robot is established by mapping the Effort Factors to the PAD emotion space. The simulation demonstrates the validity of the model.

Human posture and movement analysis is important in the areas of rehabilitation, sports medicine, and virtual training. However, the development of sensors with good accuracy, low cost, light weight, and suitability for long durations of human motion capture is still an ongoing issue. In this paper, a new flexible textile sensor for knee joint movement measurements was developed by using ordinary fabrics and conductive yarns. An electrogoniometer was adopted as a standard reference to calibrate the proposed sensor and validate its accuracy. The knee movements of different daily activities were performed to evaluate the performance of the sensor. The results show that the proposed sensor could be used to monitor knee joint motion in everyday life with acceptable accuracy.

Motion capture, eye-tracking and digital image capture technologies are rapidly replacing traditional life drawing practice. We are led to believe that such technologies provide high-quality movement-analysis resources, yet these new tools are only in the early developmental stages. The author employed cutting-edge movement-analysis technologies and traditional drawing practice to create a series of “transparent” key-frame drawings based on Muybridge-style movement sequences, depicting specificity of the skeleton and musculature at key anatomical landmarks as though seen through the skin to stimulate perception of both movement and structure simultaneously.

A dance notation system is usually regarded as a representation tool rather than a creative tool. This paper uses the indeterminacy approach as a creativity method to assist body-based limb exercise and development. The movement notation system is constructed based on the effort action from Laban Movement Analysis. In-depth interviews provide a comprehensive insight into the choreographer’s perspective. The findings show that the notation system and body-based improvisation training are not mutually exclusive. Therefore, the use of a notation system gives dancers a better understanding of how movements interact with various stimuli, in relation to internal and external environments.
