Computer simulations of the blood flow through right coronary arteries with two stenoses in the same arterial segment are carried out to investigate the interactions of serial stenoses, especially the effect of the distal stenosis. Various mathematical models are developed by varying the location of the distal stenosis. The numerical results show that the variation of the distal stenosis has significant impact on coronary hemodynamics, such as the pressure drop, flow shifting, wall shear stress and flow separation. Our simulations demonstrate that the distal stenosis has insignificant effect on the disturbed flow pattern in the regions of upstream and across the proximal stenosis. In a curved artery segment with two moderate stenoses of the same size, the distal stenosis causes a larger pressure drop and a more disturbed flow field in the poststenotic region than the proximal stenosis does. A distal stenosis located at a further downstream position causes a larger pressure drop and a stronger reverse flow.

alpha-Adrenergic control of the oxygen delivery to the myocardium during exercise was investigated in eight conscious dogs instrumented for chronic measurements of coronary blood flow, left ventricular (LV) pressure, aortic blood pressure, and heart rate and sampling of arterial and coronary sinus blood. After alpha-adrenergic receptor blockade a standard exercise load elicited a significantly greater increase in heart rate, rate of change of LV pressure (LV dP/dt), LV dP/dt/P, and coronary blood flow than was elicited in the unblocked state. In contrast to the response pattern during control exercise, there was no significant change in coronary sinus oxygen tension (PO2), myocardial arteriovenous oxygen difference, and myocardial oxygen delivery-to-oxygen consumption ratio. It is concluded that the normal relationship between myocardial oxygen supply and oxygen demand is modified during exercise after alpha-adrenergic blockade, whereby oxygen delivery is better matched to oxygen consumption. These results indicate that the increase in coronary blood flow and oxygen delivery to the myocardium during normal exercise is limited by alpha-adrenergic vasoconstriction.

Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) have the characteristics of high temperature and high pressure resistance, as well as compact structure, so they are widely used in the supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle. In order to fully study the heat transfer process of the Z-type PCHE, a numerical model of traditional Z-type PCHE was established and the accuracy of the model was verified. On this basis, a new type of spiral PCHE (S-ZPCHE) is proposed in this paper. The segmental design method was used to compare the pressure changes under 5 different spiral angles, and it was found that increasing the spiral angle θ of the spiral structure will reduce the pressure drop of the fluid. The effects of different spiral angles on the thermal-hydraulic performance of S-ZPCHE were compared. The results show that the pressure loss of fluid is greatly reduced, while the heat transfer performance is slightly reduced, and it was concluded that the spiral angle of 20° is optimal. The local fluid flow states of the original structure and the optimal structure were compared to analyze the reason for the pressure drop reduction effect of the optimal structure. Finally, the performance of the optimal structure was analyzed under variable working conditions. The results show that the effect of reducing pressure loss of the new S-ZPCHE is more obvious in the low Reynolds number region.

Myocardial blood flow in human subjects was assessed by comparative simultaneous measurement of krypton 85 radioactive decay from coronary sinus and precordial scintillation. Empirical correction of postclearance background from precordial curves yielded a high degree of correlation between flows derived from the two sampling sites (r = .889, P < .001). Comparison of left and right coronary flows in nine subjects revealed similarity in flow through the two vessels over a wide range of actual flow values (r = .945, P < .001).
