Microtubules (MTs) are cytoplasmic polymers whose dynamics have an influence on cell shape and motility. MTs influence cell behavior both through their growth and disassembly and through the binding of enzymes to their surfaces. In either case, the positions of the MTs change over time as cells grow and develop. We are working on methods to determine where MTs are at different times during either the cell cycle or a morphogenetic event, using thin and thick sections for electron microscopy and computer graphics to model MT distributions. One approach is to track MTs through serial thin sections cut transverse to the MT axis. This work uses a video camera to digitize electron micrographs of cross sections through a MT system and create image files in computer memory. These are aligned and corrected for relative distortions by using the positions of 8 - 10 MTs on adjacent sections to define a general linear transformation that will align and warp adjacent images to an optimum fit. Two hundred MT images are then used to calculate an “average MT”, and this is cross-correlated with each micrograph in the serial set to locate points likely to correspond to MT centers. This set of points is refined through a discriminate analysis that explores each cross correlogram in the neighborhood of every point with a high correlation score.

From 1979 to 1983 the American Research Center in Egypt carried out an architectural, archaeological and geo-archaeological study of the Giza Sphinx. Photogrammetry and conventional surveying techniques were used to prepare detailed plans and front and side elevations of the monument. These have made it possible to construct a computer model of the current condition of the Sphinx, and its hypothesized condition in ancient times, both as originally carved in the 4th Dynasty, and as remodelled and renovated during the 18th Dynasty. Careful analysis of surviving detached fragments of the Sphinx allowed details of beard and uraeus to be included in the reconstruction. This process of creating a computer model of the Sphinx is akin to sculpting the statue again in computer memory.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software is often used to study fluid flow and structures motion in fluids. The CFD normally requires large size of arrays and computer memory and then caused long execution time. However, Innovation of computer hardware such as multi-cores processor provides an alternative solution to improve this programming performance. This paper discussed loop parallelize multi-cores processor for optimization of sequential looping CFD code. This loop parallelize CFD was achieved by applying multi-tasking or multi-threading code into the original CFD code which was developed by one of the authors. The CFD code was developed based on Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (RANS) method. The new CFD code program was developed using Microsoft Visual Basic (VB) programming language. In the early stage, the whole CFD code was constructed in a sequential flow before it is modified to parallel flow by using VBs multi-threading library. In the comparison, fluid flow around the hull of round-shaped FPSO was selected to compare the performance of both the programming codes. Besides, executed results of this self-developed code such as pressure distribution around the hull were also presented in this paper.

Abstract The resonant conditions for traveling waves in rotating disks are derived. The nonlinear resonant spectrum of a rotating disk is computed from the resonant conditions. Such a resonant spectrum is useful for the disk drive industry to determine the range of operational rotation speed. The resonant wave motions for linear and nonlinear, rotating disks are simulated numerically for a 3.5-inch diameter computer memory disk.

Abstract In simulating the three dimensional packing process with arbitrary shaped objects, the task of detecting interference between objects is important and very difficult. This paper, representing the three dimensional packing space and objects with an octree, presents an effective interference detection algorithm, which can overcome the performance shortcomings that the conventional methods have in terms of real-time response, computer memory and computational accuracy. By recording the distribution status of packing space in the “bits” of short integers, the data space can be compressed to 1/16 of that used by conventional algorithms.

The main goal of this paper is to solve a class of Darboux problems by converting them into the two-dimensional nonlinear Volterra integral equation of the second kind. The scheme approximates the solution of these integral equations using the discrete Galerkin method together with local radial basis functions, which use a small set of data instead of all points in the solution domain. We also employ the Gauss–Legendre integration rule on the influence domains of shape functions to compute the local integrals appearing in the method. Since the scheme is constructed on a set of scattered points and does not require any background meshes, it is meshless. The error bound and the convergence rate of the presented method are provided. Some illustrative examples are included to show the validity and efficiency of the new technique. Furthermore, the results obtained demonstrate that this method uses much less computer memory than the method established using global radial basis functions. doi:10.1017/S1446181121000377
