AbstractA free-swimming thornback ray Raja clavata specimen demonstrating significant morphological abnormality is reported, captured by beam trawl in the Irish Sea off north Wales, UK. The anterior sections of both pectoral fins were separated from the head section for a length of approximately 140 mm extending from the rostrum tip to a point posterior of the spiracles, along with abnormal morphology of the gill slits. This phenomenon has been observed elsewhere but is the first documented example of this abnormality in the eastern Irish Sea, despite widespread targeting of the species across the region by commercial and recreational fishers. Possible causes and consequences of the observed abnormality are discussed.

Abstract Introduction In September 2017 our frailty service was started within our medium sized DGH in North Wales. Working with our management team we secured a significant clinical resource including: We describe how resources, setting and staffing develop over a 2 year period in order to create a service which meets the needs of the local population. Method The service has been in a constant state of development since it has been in operation, utilising a PDSA model with regular meetings of clinical and managerial staff to analyse performance. Results With each new PDSA cycle the amount of patients reviewed has increased. With the move to AMU we increased the monthly number of patients reviewed from 29 to 172 patients reviewed, 97 of which were discharged directly from the unit. Conclusion Using QI methodology our Frailty Service has improved dramatically since its inception. We will continue to analyse how we work to improve patient outcomes and cost effectiveness.

Abstract Filterable microorganisms participate in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) cycling in freshwater systems, however their exact functional role remains unknown. We determined taxonomic identity and community dynamics of prokaryotic microbiomes in the 0.22 µm-filtered fraction and unfiltered freshwater from the Conwy River (North Wales, UK) in microcosms and, using targeted metabolomics and 14C-labelling, examined their role in utilization of amino acids, organic acids, and sugars spiked at environmentally-relevant (nanomolar) concentrations. To identify changes in community structure, we used 16S rRNA amplicon and shotgun sequencing. Unlike the unfiltered water samples where the consumption of DOC was rapid, the filtered fraction showed a 3-days lag phase before the consumption started. Analysis of functional categories of clusters of orthologous groups of proteins (COGs) showed COGs associated with energy production increased in numbers in both fractions with substrate addition. The filtered fraction utilized low-molecular-weight (LMW) DOC at much slower rates than the whole community. Addition of nanomolar concentrations of LMW DOC did not measurably influence the composition of the microbial community nor the rate of consumption across all substrate types in either fraction. We conclude that due to their low activity, filterable microorganisms play a minor role in LMW DOC processing within short residence time of lotic freshwater systems.

The accurate estimation of grassland vegetation parameters at a high spatial resolution is important for the sustainable management of grassland areas. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors with a single laser beam emission capability can rapidly detect grassland vegetation parameters, such as canopy height, fractional vegetation coverage (FVC) and aboveground biomass (AGB). However, there have been few reports on the ability to detect grassland vegetation parameters based on RIEGL VUX-1 UAV LiDAR (Riegl VUX-1) systems. In this paper, we investigated the ability of Riegl VUX-1 to model the AGB at a 0.1 m pixel resolution in the Hulun Buir grazing platform under different grazing intensities. The LiDAR-derived minimum, mean, and maximum canopy heights and FVC were used to estimate the AGB across the entire grazing platform. The flight height of the LiDAR-derived vegetation parameters was also analyzed. The following results were determined: (1) The Riegl VUX-1-derived AGB was predicted to range from 29 g/m2 to 563 g/m2 under different grazing conditions. (2) The LiDAR-derived maximum canopy height and FVC were the best predictors of grassland AGB (R2 = 0.54, root-mean-square error (RMSE) = 64.76 g/m2). (3) For different UAV flight altitudes from 40 m to 110 m, different flight heights showed no major effect on the derived canopy height. The LiDAR-derived canopy height decreased from 9.19 cm to 8.17 cm, and the standard deviation of the LiDAR-derived canopy height decreased from 3.31 cm to 2.35 cm with increasing UAV flight altitudes. These conclusions could be useful for estimating grasslands in smaller areas and serving as references for other remote sensing datasets for estimating grasslands in larger areas.
