Concentrations of heavy metals in Southern Kuzbass urban soils affected by coal mining industry and sity boilers were studied. The risks of toxic effects of elements found in soils as a result of geochemical sampling (200 samples) were identified. The hazard ratio during the intake of elements - toxins into the human body orally and via inhalation was calculated. Analysis of uncertainty in the estimation of the average daily doses was carried out. The obtained risk parameters fall into the category of permissible or acceptable. The primary contribution to the total hazard ratio is made by the manganese, cobalt, copper, and arsenic. These elements show special features of the soil in the affected area of coal mining, urban boilers everywhere and the activity of repair — metallurgical and foundry businesses locally. No pronounced differentiation of the city areas according to the value of the hazard ratio was discovered.

Abstract In this paper, the total and phytoavailable form of copper in allotment garden in Zielona Góra are presented. Soil samples were collected from eight places in the allotments gardens and two samples from outside in the neighbourhood. The total content of copper varied from 2.58 to 16.23 mg · kg-1. The form of copper potentially avail-able for plants varied from 0.2 to 3.85 mg · kg-1. The total content of copper meets the requirements of Directive by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of the 21st March 2002 on the acceptable content of heavy metals in soils and Directive by the Minister of the Environment of the 9th September 2002 on the standards of soil quality and the standards of land quality

The paper studies heavy metals in soils of the train removal station Ussuriysk JSC Russian Railways. An adverse effect of railway transport on adjacent territories is shown. Railway transport and subjects of its support are permanent sources of pollution. Long-term emissions to the air are reflected by essential accumulation of tocsins in the top horizons of the soil. The authors reveal the amount of heavy metals in soils of the train removal station Ussuriysk JSC Russian Railways. To identify the coefficient of heavy metals concentration in soil samples of 8 trial areas of technogenic and anthropogenic zones of the city were analyzed. To identify local technogenic anomalies concentration coefficients were calculated. The authors concluded that the territory of the train removal station Ussuriysk JSC Russian Railways was very polluted. The south of the railway station is characterized by an average pollution level. The authors revealed high concentrations of Zn, Mn, Fe, Cu and Pb in soils of the trial sites with a high transport loading.

The article presents the results of studies on the assessment of heavy metal pollution of soils and epiphytes in of the city of Izhevsk. Objects of research: soils of near-trunk circles of black poplar (Populus nigra L.) and epiphytic moss of Schreber's pleurotium (Pleurozium schreberi (Willd. Ex Brid.) Mitt.). To assess the pollution, the magnetic susceptibility of soils and mosses was determined, as well as the average total content of heavy metals in the samples under study. The relationship between the content of heavy metals and the magnetic susceptibility of soils and epiphytes has been determined. A correlation was revealed between the total content of Zn, Cr, Fe, V in soils and in mosses, which indicates air pollution of soils. The impact of the urban effluents of Mytilene (Lesvos island, Greece) on the receiving coastal marine environment, was evaluated by studying the quality of the city effluents (BOD5, COD, SS, heavy metals) and the marine sediments (grain size, organic matter, heavy metals). It was found that the urban effluents of Mytilene contain high organic matter and suspended particle load because of septage discharge into the sewerage network. Furthermore, although the city does not host important industrial activity, its effluents contain appreciable metal load, which is mainly associated with the particulate phase. The city effluents are discharged into the coastal marine environment and their colloidal and particulate matter after flocculation settles to the bottom, where is incorporated into the sediments. Over the years, the accumulation of organic matter and metals into the harbour mud has created a non-point pollution source in the relatively non-polluted coastal marine environment of the island. Copper and Zn were the metals which presented the higher enrichment in the sediments of the inner harbour of Mytilene.
