Drain water at 35°C was directly discharged into sewer in most of barbershop with Electric water heater. Heat utilization efficiency is lower, and energy grade match between input and output is not appropriate in most of barbershops. Two waste heat recovery systems were presented according to the heat utilization characteristics of barbershops and principle of cascade utilization of energy. One was the waste heat recovery system by water-to-water heat exchanger (WHR-HE), and the other is the waste heat recovery system by water-to-water heat exchanger and high-temperature heat pump (WHR-CHEHP). The two heat recovery systems were analyzed by the first and second Laws of thermodynamic. The analyzed results show that the energy consumption can be reduced about 75% for HR-HE, and about 98% for WHR-CHEHP. Both WHR-HE and WHR-CHEHP are with better energy-saving effect and economic benefits.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is regarded as a promising technology for the production of biofuels from biomass and wastes. As such, there is a drive towards continuous-flow processing systems to aid process scale-up and eventually commercialization. The current study presents results from a novel pilot-scale HTL reactor with a feed capacity of up to 100 L/h and a process volume of approximately 20 L. The pilot plant employs a heat exchanger for heat recovery and a novel hydraulic oscillation system to increase the turbulence in the tubular reactor. The energy grass Miscanthus and the microalgae Spirulina, both representing advanced dedicated energy crops, as well as sewage sludge as high-potential waste stream were selected to assess the reactor performance. Biomass slurries with up to 16 wt% dry matter content were successfully processed. The heat recovery of the heat exchanger is found to increase with reactor run time, reaching 80% within 5–6 h of operation. The hydraulic oscillation system is shown to improve mixing and enhance heat transfer. Bio-crudes with average yields of 26 wt%, 33 wt% and 25 wt% were produced from Miscanthus, Spirulina and sewage sludge, respectively. The yields also appeared to increase with reactor run time. Bio-crude from HTL of Spirulina was mainly composed of palmitic acid, glycerol, heptadecane and linolelaidic acid, while biocrude from sewage sludge contained mainly palmitic acid, oleic acid and stearic acid. In contrast, biocrude from HTL of Miscanthus consisted of a large number of different phenolics. An energetic comparison between the three feedstocks revealed a thermal efficiency of 47%, 47% and 33% and energy return on investment (EROI) of 2.8, 3.3 and 0.5 for HTL of Miscanthus, Spirulina and sewage sludge, respectively.

Kata kunci: Analisis jepit; minyak kelapa sawit; sedia ada; rangkaian pemindahan haba; kitar semula haba maksimum A palm oil refinery involves energy–intensive processes. Maximizing thermal efficiency of palm oil refinery is crucial for the plant profitability. This work implements a pinch analysis retrofit technique to maximize heat recovery and thermal efficiency of a palm oil refinery, subject to the existing process constraints. The procedures involve setting the maximum heat recovery targets and cost–effective retrofit of the heat exchanger network (HEN). Application of the technique on a palm oil refinery results in reduction of 700 kW (21%) heating and cooling loads or a saving of RM370,787, incurring a capital investment of about RM656,293 and a payback period of 1.77 years. Key words: Pinch analysis; palm oil; retrofit; heat exchanger network; maximum heat recovery

The most part of energy losses in power system such as fuel cells is due to the heat released by the exhaust gas to atmosphere. The exhaust gas consists of non-condensable gas and steam with sensible and latent heat. As a lot of latent heat is included in the exhaust gas, its recovery is very important to improve the power system efficiency. Based on the previous basic studies, a thermal hydraulic prediction method for latent heat recovery exchangers was proposed. For the condensation of steam on heat transfer tubes, the modified Sherwood number taking account of the mass absorption effect on the wall was used. Two kinds of compact heat exchanger with staggered banks of bare tubes of 10.5 or 4mm in outer diameter was designed with the prediction method. The more compactness was obtained with the smaller tubes at a designed heat recovery. The thermal hydraulic behavior in the compact heat exchangers was experimentally studied with air-steam mixture gas. In the parametric experiments varying the steam mass concentration, the temperature distributions of cooling water and mixture gas were measured. The experimental results agreed well with the prediction proposed in this study and the more compactness with the smaller tubes was proved.
