Potentials in the amphibian tectum, evoked by stimulation of the optic nerve, were recorded extracellularly. Four discrete potentials, referred to as the m 1 , m 2 , u 1 and u 2 waves, occur at different latencies after stimulation. We have shown that these waves represent summed post-synaptic potentials generated by synchronous activation of four different groups of optic nerve fibres. The m 1 and m 2 waves are generated by two classes of myelinated optic nerve fibres, previously characterized as ‘dimming’ and ‘event’ fibres. The maximum amplitude of the m 2 wave occurs just below, and of the m 2 wave just above, cell layer 8 of P. Ramón. The u 1 and u 2 waves are generated by ‘edge’ and ‘convexity’ fibres, respectively. The maximum amplitude of the u 1 wave occurs near the surface of the tectum, and of the u 2 wave some 100 μm below it. Postsynaptic cell bodies for all four classes of optic fibre are located in layer 8.

Tactile stimulation of Boston ivy tendrils results in the development of bilaterally symmetric discs which adhere to substrates in the vicinity of the tendrils. Our electron microscopic examination of the tendrils indicates that adhesive secretion occurs from the peripheral cells at the contact face of the discs. Cell walls in this region develop pockets which fill with adhesive and ultimately coalesce. In fully adherent discs, the adhesive occupies the region between the substrate and the cells as well as the intracellular regions between the peripheral cells. While a cuticle was present on immature discs, no cuticle-like material was observed at the contact interface of mature discs.Staining of the adhesive was enhanced by ruthenium red and potassium ferrocyanide treatments, and the adhesive bound both colloidal iron and thorium. These results indicated that the adhesive is possibly a mucopolysaccharide.

Multipotent cells obtain from human postpartum term placenta is an ethically conductive, easily accessible and high-yielding stem cell source. In this conference presentation, we demonstrate using microchannel platform to culture and differentiate the human placenta-derived stem cells. Both chemical and shear stress stimulation effects were investigated.
