Abstract It has been proposed that the coherent propagation of long-lived heavy neutrino mass eigenstates can lead to an oscillating rate of lepton number conserving (LNC) and violating (LNV) events, as a function of the distance between the production and displaced decay vertices. We discuss this phenomenon, which we refer to as heavy neutrino-antineutrino oscillations, in the framework of quantum field theory (QFT), using the formalism of external wave packets. General formulae for the oscillation probabilities and the number of expected events are derived and the coherence and localisation conditions that have to be satisfied in order for neutrino-antineutrino oscillations to be observable are discussed. The formulae are then applied to a low scale seesaw scenario, which features two nearly mass degenerate heavy neutrinos that can be sufficiently long lived to produce a displaced vertex when their masses are below the W boson mass. The leading and next-to-leading order oscillation formulae for this scenario are derived. For an example parameter point used in previous studies, the kinematics of the considered LNC/LNV processes are simulated, to check that the coherence and localisation conditions are satisfied. Our results show that the phenomenon of heavy neutrino-antineutrino oscillations can indeed occur in low scale seesaw scenarios and that the previously used leading order formulae, derived with a plane wave approach, provide a good approximation for the considered example parameter point.

Explicit field theory computations are carried out of the joint probabilities associated with spin correlations of μ- μ+ produced in e- e+ collision in the standard electroweak model to the leading order. The derived expressions are found to depend not only on the speed of the e- e+ pair but also on the underlying couplings. These expressions are unlike the ones obtained from simply combining the spins of the relevant particles which are of kinematical nature. It is remarkable that these explicit results obtained from quantum field theory show a clear violation of Bell's inequality.

We consider the [Formula: see text]-symmetric quantum field theory on the noncommutative spacetime with angular twist and construct its pseudo-Hermitian interpretation. We explore the differences between internal and spatial parities in the context of the angular twist and for the latter we find new [Formula: see text]-symmetric interactions that are nontrivial only for the noncommutative spacetime. We reproduce the same formula for the leading order T-matrix of the equivalent Hermitian model as the one obtained earlier for the quantum field theory on the commutative spacetime. This formula implies that the leading order scattering amplitude preserves the symmetries of the noncommutative geometry if they are not broken in the non-Hermitian formulation.

We show that Green function methods can be straightforwardly applied to nonlinear equations appearing as the leading order of a short time expansion. Higher-order corrections can be then computed giving a satisfactory agreement with numerical results. The relevance of these results relies on the possibility of fully exploiting a gradient expansion in both classical and quantum field theory granting the existence of a strong coupling expansion. Having a Green function in this regime in quantum field theory amounts to obtain the corresponding spectrum of the theory.

Yang's theorem forbids the process Z0 →2γ in any Poincaré invariant theory if photons are bosons and their two-particle states transform under the Poincaré group in the standard way (under the standard coproduct of the Poincaré group). This is an important result as it does not depend on the assumptions of quantum field theory. Recent work on noncommutative geometry requires deforming the above coproduct by the Drinfel'd twist. We prove that Z0 →2γ is forbidden for the twisted coproduct as well. This result is also independent of the assumptions of quantum field theory. As an illustration of the use of our general formulae, we further show that Z0 →ν+ ν is forbidden for the standard or twisted coproduct of the Poincaré group if the neutrino is massless, even if lepton number is violated. This is a special case of our general result that a massive particle of spin j cannot decay into two identical massless particles of the same helicity if j is odd, regardless of the coproduct used.

In this review we study the elementary structure of Conformal Field Theory in which is a recipe for further studies of critical behavior of various systems in statistical mechanics and quantum field theory. We briefly review CFT in dimensions which plays a prominent role for example in the well-known duality AdS/CFT in string theory where the CFT lives on the AdS boundary. We also describe the mapping of the theory from the cylinder to a complex plane which will help us gain an insight into the process of radial quantization and radial ordering. Finally we will develop the representation of the Virasoro algebra which is the well-known "Verma module".
