For extremal charged black holes, the thermodynamic entropy is proportional to the mass or charges but not proportional to the area. This is demonstrated here for dyonic extremal black hole solutions of string theory. It is pointed out that these solutions have zero classical action although the area is nonzero. By combining the general form of the entropy allowed by thermodynamics with recent observations in the literature it is possible to fix the entropy almost completely.

Abstract We consider the compactification on a circle of the Heterotic Superstring effective action to first order in the Regge slope parameter α′ and re-derive the α′-corrected Buscher rules first found in ref. [42], proving the T duality invariance of the dimensionally-reduced action to that order in α′. We use Iyer and Wald’s prescription to derive an entropy formula that can be applied to black-hole solutions which can be obtained by a single non-trivial compactification on a circle and discuss its invariance under the α′-corrected T duality transformations. This formula has been successfully applied to α′-corrected 4-dimensional non-extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes in ref. [21] and we apply it here to a heterotic version of the Strominger-Vafa 5-dimensional extremal black hole.

We consider the nonsupersymmetric “magic” theories based on the split quaternion and the split complex division algebras. We show that these theories arise as “Ehlers” [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] truncations of the maximal supergravity theory, exploiting techniques related to the very-extended Kac–Moody algebras. We also generalize the procedure to other [Formula: see text] truncations, resulting in additional classes of nonsupersymmetric theories, as well as to truncations of nonmaximal theories. Finally, we discuss duality orbits of extremal black hole solutions in some of these nonsupersymmetric theories.

Abstract In this article we study a family of four-dimensional, $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 supergravity theories that interpolates between all the single dilaton truncations of the SO(8) gauged $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 8 supergravity. In this infinitely many theories characterized by two real numbers — the interpolation parameter and the dyonic “angle” of the gauging — we construct non-extremal electrically or magnetically charged black hole solutions and their supersymmetric limits. All the supersymmetric black holes have non-singular horizons with spherical, hyperbolic or planar topology. Some of these supersymmetric and non-extremal black holes are new examples in the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 8 theory that do not belong to the STU model. We compute the asymptotic charges, thermodynamics and boundary conditions of these black holes and show that all of them, except one, introduce a triple trace deformation in the dual theory.

A Kaluza-Klein state configuration in black-hole qubit correspondence (BHQC) is considered in cyclic cycles of its Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. After a sequence of Peccei-Quinn transformations on the Kaluza-Klein state in cyclic cycles alternating between large and small extremal black hole (EBH) configurations, we obtain the corresponding amount of variation in the initial Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in cyclic cycles. We consider different cases where the EBH state alternates between small and large states. We then demonstrate that the total Bekenstein-Hawking entropy increases in these processes.

Abstract An important open question in black hole thermodynamics is about the existence of a “mass gap” between an extremal black hole and the lightest near-extremal state within a sector of fixed charge. In this paper, we reliably compute the partition function of Reissner-Nordström near-extremal black holes at temperature scales comparable to the conjectured gap. We find that the density of states at fixed charge does not exhibit a gap; rather, at the expected gap energy scale, we see a continuum of states. We compute the partition function in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles, keeping track of all the fields appearing through a dimensional reduction on S2 in the near-horizon region. Our calculation shows that the relevant degrees of freedom at low temperatures are those of 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to the electromagnetic U(1) gauge field and to an SO(3) gauge field generated by the dimensional reduction.
