Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to retrospectively review the midface and orbital floor fractures treated at our institution with regard to epidemiological aspects, surgical treatment options and postoperative complications and discuss this data with the current literature. Study design One thousand five hundred and ninety-four patients with midface and orbital fractures treated at the Department of Oral, Cranio-Maxillofacial and Facial Plastic Surgery of the Goethe University Hospital in Frankfurt (Germany) between 2007 and 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were evaluated by age, gender, etiology, fracture pattern, defect size, surgical treatment and complications. Results The average patient age was 46.2 (± 20.8). Most fractures (37.5%) occurred in the age between 16 and 35. Seventy-two percent of patients were male while 28% were female. The most common cause of injury was physical assault (32.0%) followed by falls (30.8%) and traffic accidents (17.0%). The average orbital wall defect size was 297.9 mm2 (± 190.8 mm2). For orbital floor reconstruction polydioxanone sheets (0.15 mm 38.3%, 0.25 mm 36.2%, 0.5 mm 2.8%) were mainly used, followed by titanium meshes (11.5%). Reconstructions with the 0.15 mm polydioxanone sheets showed the least complications (p < 0.01, r = 0.15). Eighteen percent of patients who showed persistent symptoms and post-operative complications: 12.9% suffered from persistent hypoesthesia, 4.4% suffered from post-operative diplopia and 3.9% showed intra-orbital hematoma. Conclusion Results of the clinical outcome in our patients show that 0.15 mm resorbable polydioxanone sheets leads to significantly less post-operative complications for orbital floor defects even for defects beyond the recommended 200 mm2.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of early postoperative complications in patients undergoing surgical treatment for meningomyelocele. Study Design: Descriptive study Place & Duration: Department of Neurosurgery, Saidu Teaching Hospital, Saidu Sharif, Swat for duration of three years from November 2017 to October 2020. Methods: Total one hundred and thirty six patients of both genders presented with meningomycele were included in this study. Patients’ ages were ranging from 5 to 120 days. All the patients were undergoing surgical treatment for meningomyelocele. Early post-operative complications were recorded after surgery Results: There were 76 (55.88%) males and 60 (44.12%) females. Forty (29.41%) patients were ages <1 month, 59 (43.38%) patients were ages 1 to 2 months 37 (27.21%) were ages above 2 months. Majority of patients 70 (51.47%) had defect size <5 cm. Post-operative complications such as surgical site infection, pyrexia, hydrocephalus and cerebrospinal fluid leakage in 20 (14.71%), 115 (84.56%, 29 (21.32%) and 33 (24.26%) patients respectively. Background: Haemorrhoids are the most common benign anorectal problems worldwide. Treatments of third and fourth degree hemorrhoids include surgical haemorrhoidectomy. Milligan Morgan haemorrhoidectomy (MMH) as described in 1937 has remained the most popular among many techniques proposed. In order to avoid the postoperative drawbacks of Milligan Morgan haemorrhoidectomy, a new surgical treatment for prolapsing haemorrhoids has been described by Longo in 1995, procedure called stapled haemorrhoidopexy which is associated with less postoperative pain and a quicker recovery. The objective of this study was to compare the short-term outcome between stapled hemorrhoidopexy and Milligan-Morgan hemorrhoidectomy.Methods: Prospective randomized study of 120 patients with grade 3 and grade 4 haemorrhoids requiring surgical treatment either MMH or SH, 60 in each group for the period of 18 months from June 2014 to November 2015. Post-operative pain, duration of surgery, duration of hospital stays, post-operative complications and time taken to return to work were compared with mean follow up period of 6 months.Results: Duration of surgery is significantly low in stapled group with P <0.001, duration of hospital stay is significantly low in stapled group with P <0.001, post-operative pain low in staple group with P <0.05, time taken to return to work is significantly early in stapled group with P <0.001. Post-operative complications incontinence not found in the present study but recurrence of two cases in each group noted.Conclusion: Stapled hemorrhoidopexy is associated with less postoperative pain, shorter duration of surgery and hospital stay, earlier return to work as compared with Milligan-Morgan open hemorrhoidectomy. The procedure is not associated with major post-operative complications.

INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted to analyse the surgical outcomes of varicose vein at Universal College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Bhairahawa. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital based prospective study done at UCMS, Bhairahwa, Nepal over the period of one year, where all the patients who had lower limb varicose vein underwent surgery were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 25 cases of varicose vein were operated at UCMS from August 2015 to July 2016. The post-operative complications like pain, wound abscess, aching, itching were minimal.  CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment by SFJ ligation with stripping long and short saphenous vein is an established effective treatment of varicose vein in our center with minimal post-operative complications. Journal of Universal College of Medical Sciences (2016) Vol.04 No.02 Issue 14, page: 14-16

Background: The question of reconstruction of human tissues and organs with the use of medical materials is still open, because of the accurate requirements for their biological and physical features. The aim of this study was to prove the efficiency of titanium nickelide constructors in treatment of isolated orbital floor fractures or combination with zygomatico-orbital complex fractures. Methods: Patients with a fracture of zygomatico-orbital complex and/or low orbital floor (n = 44) carried out different treatments: in the first group, osteosynthesis and endoprosthesis with titanium nickelide structures; in the second group, titan mini-plates osteosynthesis; in the third group (‘blow-out’), endoprosthesis with a titanium nickelide mesh; and in the fourth group (‘blow-out’), conservative treatment and monitoring (archive data) (p > 0.05). The paraesthesia, diplopia, enophthalmos and exophthalmos degree were measured in points. Results: In one year, the first and second groups had no differences in level of paraesthesia (p > 0.05). The absence of exophthalmos and differences between first and second groups, and between the third and the fourth groups with positive dynamics inside the groups were proved (p < 0.05). In the first and third groups, enophthalmos was absent, and it increased in the second and fourth groups (p < 0.01, p < 0.11). Diplopia in the first and third groups was absent, and it increased in the second and fourth groups (p < 0.05, p < 0.01). Conclusion: The elasticity and biocompatibility of titanium nickelide make the implant insertion and restoration of the lower orbital wall anatomy easier, with good postoperative clinical results.
