In 2008, Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, developed the preoperative evaluation (POE) clinic under the department of anesthesiology to provide preoperative history and physical examination, and medical optimization. Over time, the POE clinic expanded to accommodate more than 90% of surgical patients, outgrowing the initial practice model. The increased patient volume with shortened turnaround times bottlenecked patient access. A multidisciplinary quality improvement team used Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control methodology to understand the issues, test potential solutions, and develop sustainable processes. With progressive Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, it moved from small internal tests of change to implementation throughout the institution. Patient access improved by 14% ( P < .001) and triage efficiency by 30% ( P < .001). These elements led to a 14% improvement in operating margin and a 24% improvement in staff satisfaction. Sustainability was ensured with an accessible dashboard of performance indicators.

The objective of this paper is to develop a sustainable integrated process design and control methodology for a distillation column system. The sustainable integrated process design and control problem for a distillation column system is typically formulated as a mathematical programming (optimization with constraints) problem, and solved by decomposing it to six sequential hierarchical sub-problems: (i) pre-analysis, (ii) design analysis, (iii) controller design analysis, (iv) sustainability analysis, (v) detailed economics analysis and (vi) final selection and verification. The results through case study of benzene-toluene separation process shows the proposed methodology is capable to find the optimal solution that satisfies design, control, sustainability and economic criteria in a simple and efficient way.

This paper presents, a control methodology based on experimental data of the tool wear as a function of cutting variables. In automatic machine tools there is strong need to control the tool wear by adjustment of the cutting parameters. In this connection, a control system, which can adjust the cutting parameters for a desired wear rate, is necessary. A regression relation is also established between the flank-wear and the cutting parameters. An inversely trained neural network model, which supplies the modified values of the cutting parameters, is used as a controller. The results are shown in the form of tables and graphs.

This paper presents an architecture and control methodology for a multi-degree-of-freedom teleoperator system. The approach incorporates impedance control of the telemanipulator pair and formulates the system as a single feedback loop encompassing the human operator, telemanipulator, and remote environment. In so doing, multivariable Nyquist-like techniques are used to design compensation for enhanced stability robustness and performance. A measure of the transparency exhibited by the multivariable teleoperator system is attained using matrix singular values. The approach is experimentally demonstrated on a three degree-of-freedom scaled telemanipulator pair with a highly coupled environment. Using direct measurement of the power delivered to the operator to assess the system’s stability robustness, along with the proposed measure of multivariable transparency, the loop-shaping compensation is shown to improve the stability robustness by a factor of almost two and the transparency by more than a factor of five.

ABSTRACTObjectives: to characterize scientific production on oncologic pain on Portal da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BIREME) from 2000 to 2008 regarding research method, language, year of publication, listed publication relating to pain evaluation and control. Methodology: bibliographic research performed through scientific articles available on BIREME, using “pain” and “cancer” descriptors on complete papers on the researched theme, published between 2000 and 2008, in Portuguese, English or Spanish. Results: 41.2% of the articles were literature revisions, in Portuguese (53%). Publications took place predominantly in the year 2003 (29%). The publications that included the most studies were Latino-americana de Enfermagem and Revista Escola de Enfermagem USP, both with 18%. The most researched study object was pain evaluation and control (41.2%). Conclusion: oncologic pain constitutes a worldwide problem, deserving the professionals’ attention. It is thus necessary to invest more on studies on the theme aiming to promote care and restore these patients’ quality of life. Descriptors: cancer; pain; nursing.
