Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an inorganic compound used for its antiseptic and skin healing properties. It is an excellent protective filter against UV radiation and it can be used as white pigment in pharmaceutical preparations. In this study, nano-ZnO particles were obtained by ultrasound treatment, and respectively by repeated freezing/heating process. The influence of synthesis method and of ultrasound generator parameters on the particles size and stability was observed. The results reveal that were obtained samples with a very good stability and sizes between 15 and 96 nm. It was found that synthesis based on ultrasound treatment lead to the formation of nanoparticles with lower sizes.

Introduction: Mannich reaction is a typical example of a three-component condensation reaction and the chemistry of Mannich bases has been the matter of search by researchers. Here an efficient procedure for the synthesis of some new Mannich derivatives of simple phenols is described. Methods: In this procedure a microwave-assisted and solvent less condensation were done between different phenols, secondary amines and paraformaldehyde. The reactions proceed in the presence of catalytic amount of nano ZnO and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) in excellent yields. 10 new compounds were synthesized (A1-A10). Chemical structures of all new compounds were confirmed by different spectroscopic methods. We optimized the chemical reactions in different conditions. Optimization reactions were done in the presence of different mineral oxides, different amount of TBAB and also different solvents. Nano ZnO and TBAB in catalytic amounts and solvent free conditions were the best conditions. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activities. Antifungal and antibacterial activities of the synthesized compounds were evaluated against some Candida, filaments fungi, gram positive and gram negative bacteria by broth micro dilution method as recommended by CLSI. Results: The result showed that compounds A2, A3 and A4 against most of the tested Candida species and compounds A5 and A7 against C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis, exhibited considerable antifungal activities. Also Compounds A8 and A10 showed desirable antifungal activities against C. neoformance and C. parapsilosis, respectively. The antibacterial activities of the synthesized compounds were also evaluated. Compounds A6 - A10 against E. Fecalis and compounds A5, A7, A9 and A10 against P. aeruginosa showed desirable antibacterial activities. Discussion: We have synthesized some new Mannich adducts of poly-hydroxyl phenols in the presence of nano-ZnO as a reusable catalyst, with the hope of discovering new lead compounds serving as potent antimicrobial agents. The advantages of this method are generality, high yields with short reaction times, simplicity, low cost and matching with green chemistry protocols. The antimicriobial studies of Mannich derivatives of phenols showed desirable results in vitro.

Background: Mould growth on coated wood products during shipment is the foremost apprehension for most of the wood industries in India. Well finished wood products tend to get deposited by staining moulds superficially in high humidity conditions during shipment. Though wood disfiguring fungi (stain moulds) normally have no significant effect on the mechanical properties of timber, they only affect the aesthetic appearance of the material without destructing the wood cell wall. This causes a huge economic loss to the manufacturer due to disfigurement of the appearance of wood products. Methods: The aim of this work is to test and enhance antimicrobial property of Nitrocellulose lacquer wood finish to prevent mould deposition on coated wood products. The work was carried out to screen and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of commercial Nitrocellulose lacquer. Several patents regarding antimicrobial activity of nano metal oxides have been visited. In order to enhance the mould resistance of this coating, its combinations with neem oil and ZnO nanoparticles were prepared and tested against the growth of staining moulds: Aspergillus niger and Penicillium sp. on the wood substrate of Melia dubia. The study was carried out for 500 hours under favorable conditions (Temperature and Relative Humidity (RH)) for the mould growth. The growth was analysed on the basis of surface area affected by stain moulds on coated wood samples. Results: The growth analysis data inferred that the ZnO nanoparticles had significant effect against the growth of stain moulds. The presence of ZnO nanoparticles increased the mould growth resistance of Nitrocellulose lacquer coating to a great extent compared to the ability of neem oil for the same. This finding demonstrates the potential use of nano ZnO for increasing the effectiveness of NC lacquer against mould growth without hampering its other properties. Conclusion: 1 % nano ZnO concentration in Nitrocellulose lacquer wood coating increased its efficacy against staining mould growth by 95 %.

Porous polyvinyl butyral and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate fibers (porous PPPS-f) and non-porous PPPS-f solid fibres were fabricated via electrospinning. The microwave absorption characteristics were investigated for single and bi-layered structures.
