Paper acidification causes paper relics to undergo embrittlement and decay, to form dregs, and even to break upon a single touch; therefore, reinforcement and deacidification treatments are essential steps for paper conservation and to retard the deterioration and prolong the life of objects. Polymeric adhesives play an essential role in reinforcement and deacidification treatments, although it is not well studied. In this work, the effect of polymeric adhesives on the conservation process and their protective effects on acidified paper relics were studied. Firstly, three polymeric adhesives, including wheat starch paste, polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), were selected as research objects. Subsequently, their effects on four popular conservation methods were further discussed, including traditional mounting, hot-melt with silk net, alcohol-soluble cotton mesh, and water-soluble cotton mesh. Additionally, as an example, the reversibility and long-term durability of water-soluble adhesive PVA-217 were assessed. Using a computer measured and controlled folding endurance tester, pendulum tensile strength tester, tear tester, burst tester, FT-IR, video optical contact angle tester, and other instruments, the conservation application of water-soluble adhesives in paper relics was evaluated. This study provides a scientific basis and experimental data for the application of polymeric adhesives in the conservation of paper relics.

The study presents the results of linear dynamics of laminated glass panels with different curvatures. This is an actual task in the field of mechanical engineering, aviation, shipbuilding, energy, architecture, etc. Such composites are durable, easy to care for and have a wide range of design options. The aim of the work is to study the influence of the curvature parameter on the frequencies and modes of composites. The paper considers the linear characteristics for laminated glass with polyvinyl butyral interlayer. The article considers behavior of the triplex and the propagation of elastic waves in the linear state. The paper performs calculations using the finite element method in the framework of modal analysis in a three-dimensional formulation in the framework of a physical linear-elastic formulation. The study uses hexagonal finite element with 8 nodes with 3 degrees of freedom in each. This work model laminated glass with a curvature parameter ranging from 0 mm to 250 mm. The composite consisted of three layers: two glass layers thickness of each was 3 mm, and a polyvinyl butyral interlayer with 0.38 mm thickness. The size of the plates was 500×500 mm. As a boundary condition, the laminate was fixed on two opposite sides. The article performs mesh size convergence analysis. The results of natural frequencies in accordance with the curvature parameter are derived. The graphs of natural vibration modes are also shown, that give a clear view about the state of composites.

Magnetic metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) of Ni, Ni82Fe18, Ni50Fe50, Ni64Fe36, and Fe were prepared by the technique of the electrical explosion of metal wire. The average size of the MNPs of all types was in the interval of 50 to 100 nm. Magnetic polymeric composites based on polyvinyl butyral with embedded metal MNPs were synthesized and their structural, adhesive, and magnetic properties were comparatively analyzed. The interaction of polyvinyl butyral (supplied as commercial GE cryogenic varnish) with metal MNPs was studied by microcalorimetry. The enthalpy of adhesion was also evaluated. The positive values of the enthalpy of interaction with GE increase in the series Ni82Fe18, Ni64Fe36, Ni50Fe50, and Fe. Interaction of Ni MNPs with GE polymer showed the negative change in the enthalpy. No interfacial adhesion of GE polymer to the surface of Fe and permalloy MNPs in composites was observed. The enthalpy of interaction with GE polymer was close to zero for Ni95Fe5 composite. Structural characterization of the GE/Ni composites with the MNPs with the lowest saturation magnetization confirmed that they tended to be aggregated even for the materials with lowest MNPs concentrations due to magnetic interaction between permalloy MNPs. In the case of GE composites with Ni MNPs, a favorable adhesion of GE polymer to the surface of MNPs was observed.

The aim of the present work is the synthesis and characterization of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are coated with oleic acid and polyvinyl butyral and mixed with microspheres and further developed ferrofluids with silicon oil. Studies of the performance of the nanoparticles in these ferrofluids with and without coating agents were carried out. The nanoparticles were synthesized using the chemical co-precipitation technique and coated with oleic acid and polyvinyl butyral, and it further mixed with microsphere ferrofluids and developed using silicon oil. The prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles and their coated forms of oleic acid and polyvinyl butyral were mixed with microspheres; furthermore, ferrofluids were developed with silicon oil. All forms of these ferrofluids are characterized for morphology and phase purity (SEM, XRD, and FTIR). The iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles have shown different magnetic properties, differentiating macroscopic iron oxide in suspended particles. The ratio of surface to volume increases along with the decrease in atomic size, essential for assessing the surface morphological properties. The magneto-rheological (MR) fluids were determined, and shear stress of Expancel microsphere mixed iron oxide nanoparticle with and without them was found almost equal. However, the ferrofluid with PVB coated nanoparticles and microspheres emerged as a stable rheological ferrofluid, sustaining high shear stress and low viscosity with increasing shear rate. Also, shear rates up to 650 s−1 have been observed, showing very high shear stress withstanding capacity. The stability and performance of the magnetic colloidal ferrofluids depend on the thermal contribution and the balance between attractive/repulsive interactions.

A planar solid-state ammonium-selective electrode, employing a composite mediator layer of graphite particles embedded in a polyvinyl butyral matrix on top of an inkjet-printed silver electrode, is presented in this paper. The effect of graphite powder mass fraction on the magnitude of the potentiometric response of the sensor was systematically verified using a batch-mode and a flow injection measurement setup. Under steady-state conditions, the paper electrode provided a Nernstian response of 57.30 mV/pNH4 over the concentration range of 10−5 M to 10−1 M with a detection limit of 4.8 × 10−6 M, while the analytical performance of the array in flow mode showed a narrower linear range (10−4 M to 10−1 M; 60.91 mV/pNH4 slope) with a LOD value of 5.6 × 10−5 M. The experimental results indicate that the prepared electrode exhibited high stability and fast response to different molar concentrations of ammonium chloride solutions. The pH-response of the paper NH4-ISE was also investigated, and the sensor remained stable in the pH range of 2.5–8.5. The potentiometric sensor presented here is simple, lightweight and inexpensive, with a potential application for in-situ analysis of environmental water samples.
