The relationship between the needle age and the growth rate in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris): a retrospective analysis by needle trace method (NTM)

The object of this study was to investigate the effect of pruning on heartwood formation in mature Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees. Fifty trees were treated by three different intensive pruning regimes: 42, 60 and 70 percentage of defoliation. After five growing seasons numbers of growth rings were counted and the width and the area of sapwood and heartwood were calculated. The results did not show any proportional increase or decrease in the heartwood area or in the number of growth rings in heartwood associated with the pruning. A statistically significant negative effect of pruning was found on the width of the five most recently formed sapwood growth rings. This decreased growth rate did not influence the ratio of sapwood and heartwood. However, it cannot be excluded that the proportion of heartwood may increase during a longer period. It is concluded that pruning is not a practicable silvicultural method for regulating heartwood formation in mature Scots pine trees.

The relationship between the ecological success of needle pathogens of forest trees and species richness of co-inhabiting endophytic fungi is poorly understood. One of the most dangerous foliar pathogens of pine is Dothistroma septosporum, which is a widely spread threat to northern European forests. We sampled two Pinus sylvestris sites in Estonia and two in Norway in order to analyse the relations between the abundance of D. septosporum and overall fungal richness, specific fungal species composition, time of season, needle age and position in the canopy. In both countries, the overall species richness of fungi was highest in autumn, showing a trend of increase with needle age. The overall species richness in the second-year needles in Estonia and third-year needles in Norway was similar, suggesting that a critical colonization threshold for needle shed in P. sylvestris is breached earlier in Estonia than in Norway. The fungal species richness in P. sylvestris needles was largely affected by Lophodermium conigenum. Especially in older needles, the relative abundance of L. conigenum was significantly higher in spring compared to summer or autumn. The timing of recruitment and colonization mechanisms of different foliage endophytes are shortly discussed.

Aim of the study: To describe the effect of stand edge after clearcut on the process of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) natural regeneration along the edge-to-interior gradient. The density, height, horizontal structure and quality of natural regeneration was evaluated.Area of the study: Kokořínsko Protected Landscape Area, Northern Bohemia (Czech Republic). The study sites naturally host Scots pine Pinetum oligotrophicum with cover of Vaccinium myrtillus L. and Vaccinium vitis-idaea L. in the herbal storey.Material and methods: Two 40 × 40 m permanent research plots were situated at the forest edge, two adjacent plots were established within the forest stand as control plots. Differences in regeneration characteristics were tested by analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by the Tukey HSD test. Interactions between regeneration characteristics and the distance from the edge were evaluated by Pearson correlation. The relationship between the top storey and natural regeneration was depicted by pair-correlation function. Principal components analysis was carried out to assess overall data structure.Main results: Generally, the further from the stand edge, the lower natural regeneration density (r ≤ -0.64, p<0.001), mean height (r ≤ -0.54, p<0.001) and the best-quality promising individuals (r = -0.40, p<0.05) were found, whereas significant influence on overall average pine quality was not observed. The highest regeneration density (15,250 pcs/ha) was reached at a distance of 5-10 m from the stand edge.Research highlights: The forest edge interior can become favourable location for natural regeneration and can be implemented into traditional regeneration approaches in pine regions.

This study investigated the relationship between the length of the tracheids, the width of annual rings, and the wood density of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) obtained from the dominant, intermediate, and suppressed classes of a 60-year-old stand. Measurement of tracheid length was performed on the material macerated from the following annual rings: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, and thence every 5 annual rings. Basic density was determined on samples that included five annual rings from the core to bark. Tree position in the stand had a significant impact on the examined properties of wood. In a given biosocial class, tracheid length decreased as the width of annual rings increased. As the biosocial position of a tree in the stand improved, the length of the tracheids increased, and wood density decreased. In wood of the same density range, the increment in tracheid length was the greatest in wood of dominant trees and the lowest in wood of suppressed trees.
